Re: Jumping into June - Chat Thread

it's the same gap that it's been CG. We'll have to talk about it in 2018 unfortunately. I will bring it up mentioning what you have issue with. We may have made the situation worse with textured step pads on the bumpers. Harder to scrape the ice off I would expect!

Re: Jumping into June - Chat Thread

You do know that I really was kidding. If I could afford a new one I'd definitely choose to buy a little piece of your work.

It's one of those little things you wonder that it was missed in winter testing. My 95 Z-71 has a lightly textured piece on top of the bumper, and since tha tailgate area has relatively negative air pressure it builds up snow really quickly, and at warmer temps turns to hard ice quickly.

When I got mine it had a marred 'Chevrolet' plate on the tailgate from being dropped on ice. You'll relate to this, the previous doctor owner had two teenaged daughters into horses, and I just know they dropped the tailgate to load bales of hay in the winter without cleaning the bumper.

An expensive bit of trim to replace and I never bothered. But in defense of good used Chev trucks, last year, beyond gas and insurance, it cost $264 total. Happy enough.

Well, at least you got enough sleep.

Just waiting for the Canadian GP to restart, it's been stopped for a deluge. Guess I should squeeze in some work.

I know....

I expect your upbringing was similar to mine, not the done thing to lay in bed very long in the morning.

nope, I feel guilty if I do. Can't say I get up as early as you do, but I am not the type to lay around in bed all morning ;-p

Marcus, that makes you exempt from judgement then.

I worked for 2 1/2 years on a 28 day cycle of all three rotating shifts. Morning, afternoon, and the aptly named graveyard shift. Never knew when you were supposed to be living.

>>> rotating shifts

That is how a country reduces it's population, as needed.

I do not do well at just waking. Often at my work best 2 hrs before bedtime, which puts me at 28-30 hour forward jumps unless I do not have someone/thing helping to regulate.

Re: Jumping into June - Chat Thread

Happy Sunday! i am glad to be home from a weekend camping ADVENTURE!
On the way up I drove through a terrible storm on hairpin curves. As soon as the rain stopped I was feeling better, then I noticed the trees on my right swaying like crazy... I stopped the car and two trees came down across the highway. The second one landed partially on the hood of my car. 2-3k damage, but the car was able to keep going.
Next day we got a thunder storm that turned into a crazy 20min hail storm. The temp went from mid 80's to 58. Overall things were fine.
I was happy to get home with no added excitement. And the house is in one piece!
Best thing... Our tent did not have one drop of water in it. Everything else was drenched and people were running home like crazy, but we just had a shot of tequila and digested all that had happened... a trip to remember!

Dropping in to say hi...
shipped my twins off to New York City for their internships so the nest is nice and quiet again. Phew.

Glad to hear M is progressing well, Kit.

yikes, Peg. Car damage is one thing, head damage is another. Glad the tree mostly missed you!

Re: Jumping into June - Chat Thread

Gosh I hate to be one of those people who only show up when I need something, but here I am asking for advice if anyone has some words of wisdom. I just can't keep up here- you guys just fly every day!

I trying a reticulated silver base for my big prong ring I'm working on. My local supplier only had 22g 80/20 for reticulation, and I think that will be fine- nice weight. The setting is raise, so prongs on the base- then a 12g wire base to hold the stone- prongs are 10g half round wire. Don't know if you need all that info but that's the design.
Problem- I followed McCreights directions- heat silver 5min- cool, pickle, heat 10 min cool, pickle- however he says by then it should just be gray metal, mine still turned black and out of the pickle- yes, the dreaded reddish fire scale was there after pickle. Ok, so I should be at step 3 but I heated again, just for 2 min- seemed to take away some of the red. Last step- warm the block- heat to red with high heat and then take away the heat to allow to cool and buckle a bit- all this while not allowing the skin to melt too much. I still have a coppery color after pickle. Ideas anyone?? Gee, I hope CG stops by with one of his tidbits!

Re: Jumping into June - Chat Thread

Pennee, sorry, nothing from me, I've never used the sheet intended for reticulation.

I've faked it with normal sterling, so no help. And I rarely use pickle.

Somebody here can help.

Re: Jumping into June - Chat Thread

Not at all, I'm just doing things differently. Carry on with pickle as usual.

Re: Jumping into June - Chat Thread

To clarify, I do use pickle but only for removing flux from hard to reach areas. I have my own peculiar way to remove firescale physically, with files and emery, and never make use of 'raising' silver to the surface.

So, pickle is not on my menu, but most use it. I often seem to end up doing things differently.

Re: Jumping into June - Chat Thread

I guess my problem is I don't want to ruin all the nice buckling and texture I've already raised with heating. I know filing and emery are the only ways to get rid of firescale- conundrum

Re: Jumping into June - Chat Thread

hi guys. home from the studio. penne, i;'ve used reticulation silver. i raise the silver about 7-10 times on the sheet just like you normally do, then reticulate it. no big deal. if your pickle is sort of copper plating it, i'd just change it. should be fine. you only want to heat it long enough to raise the silver under a reducing flame. does that help?
