Etsy support told me this "It sounds like you’re experiencing an issue that our engineering team is looking into regarding the listing thumbnails displayed. I’ve added all of the details from this ticket to their investigation so they have more information to work with." So it sounds like they're telling people different things. They tell me it's a bug, they tell other people it's a feature? Why do we pay such high fees to Etsy when it takes their "engineering team" months to fix stuff? I feel like Etsy has been having more "bugs" related to images and thumbnails over the past 4-6 months than they've had the entire 3+ years I've been selling on etsy. Feels like their engineering team consists of 1 person in a basement.
I would suggest we all just sit tight. Give it a month and when Etsy loses a few million $$$ due to a poor looking site they'll fix it super fast. To think, not even a warning...so sad. Sales will decrease across the platform. They'll find a fix because they won't be able to depend on every shop having the capacity to correct the photos. Hang tight and ride the wave.
For my mobile version of the store, the previews have been fixed: now they are rectangular again, without cropping. But this is not fixed for the desktop version.
I've been seeing the square thumbnails in every shop (but not in search) on the Etsy App for months, but I never thought they would bring it onto the Etsy website - until today. Are they testing this and planning on changing their ratio to square, or is it a bug/error? Whatever it is, they better change it back! I have thousands of listings spread across four different shops and I am soooo not in the mood to create new photos and adjust thumbnails. It's impossible to make the thumbnail look good in square AND landscape formats! This is ridiculous, Etsy better fix or change this soon - our shops look crazy with these square thumbnails. ETSY PLEASE FIX THIS!
I just noticed this today! It wasn't doing that before. When I go into editing my shop, the photos go back to being uncropped, but when I leave edit mode, they're zoomed in again.
This sort of drastic change requires *at least* a month of advance notice to sellers. Our shop has 1450+ listings, and it would take our team countless hours of tedious work to re-format thumbnails to fit a square aspect ratio. And to be bluntly honest, this change is not an improvement. Square thumbnails look dated and unprofessional in our opinion.
@packagery@cindylouwho2 : Looking at your images, I am willing to wager that they are running some imaging library that is trying to crop out "empty" space and make the item more prominent --- and not doing a good job of it.
@BagmakerSupply most of mine that are badly cropped seem to have used the zoom tool; Etsy provides no way to fix them except uploading each original again.
They could easily remove the old zoom effect or even allow us to do that, but no, that would take another line of code or two. So shops have looked like crap for weeks now.
Various shops I have gone to on my iPad show seller photos all different sizes with titles and prices cut off. I would think a potential buyer would get discouraged if they can’t see price and description up front. I assume a lot of Etsy sellers don’t even know how their photos are now looking.
Yep I've noticed on my desktop it has reverted back to square as well, this is SO frustrating, especially since it's been happening since the start of June! Clearing my cache did not work this time unfortunately. It looks so bad!
How do we deal with this going forward? The thumbnail tool STILL shows the landscape orientation. So if we adjust the thumbnail image then etsy just zooms in on our adjustment.
We really only have two tools available to us to market our items: images and descriptions. Etsy has chosen to make descriptions partially concealed (of lesser importance than reviews), and now they're distorting our images. And we still don't have a SQUARE thumbnail tool for us to use so even new listings will just perpetuate this whole bungled mess.
I'm WAY beyond disgusted with their flagrant disregard for sellers about this whole issue.
