Can't create a Custom Order as a Digital Item

I'm trying to create a Custom Order for a customer. Etsy must have recently changed something in the last day or two, as the Edit page is now completely different for custom orders.

After creating the custom order, I go to Edit it and there's no option to change it to a digital download. At the bottom of the page there's an error that the Craft Type is missing, but there's no section for that on the page anywhere.

  • Private listings can not be created for digital items. If you want to offer a custom digital item, consider setting up made-to-order digital listings in your shop.

Probably best to copy an exisiting listing and just change the details on it

Previously I would create the order, then edit the listing to change it from physical to digital download. Worked just fine.

Re: Can't create a Custom Order as a Digital Item

Well, here is my current situation. I make personalized orders, of both types: physical (printed posters) and digital (that my customers printed themselves).

For digital orders, what I had been doing until now was the following way that, far from being perfect, worked. When creating a personalized order with a digital file from the conversation, I established a very high price (so that my client would not buy it just yet) and with a shipping price.

Once done, have the client wait for me to edit the listing. Go back to the listing and started editing, changing to DIGITAL (this automatically eliminated the shipping rate), uploading the file, and setting the price right. And re updated the private listing, changing it from a physical to made-to-order digital.

The only thing new was that a new link appeared in the conversation, saying that the item has been updated. And then I let my client buy from that link, whenever they wanted. No rush, since the listing would not appear in my store front.

But as we all know, on June 25th Etsy is going to update the listing form. Don't get me wrong: I have no problems with the new form, I love it, I've been using it for months now. Win-win for me!

But today I went to do the trick I always did, to create a private digital listing from the conversation and I realized this: The new form that is accessed from the button in the conversation does not allow you to attach a digital file! I looked around and couldn't find it at all!

To get out of trouble quick, I created a digital listing from scratch, uploaded it to my store (that is, it is public) and sent a link to my client. But I hate this system. Anyone else can come buy it!

Does anyone have a solution? I get stressed just thinking that this is the only way from now on.

Thanks in advance, Bruno

Re: Can't create a Custom Order as a Digital Item

I have the same issue. I create a lot of custom listings that include a digital download when customers want to purchase an extended license. It looks like Etsy made a huge oversight when updating to the new layout because now I can't change a custom listing to a digital download.

Still no fix, I don't understand why they changed it anyway, it seems so amateur to have a private listing visible to anyone.  I guess the only way is to send the client to another website…

Re: Can't create a Custom Order as a Digital Item

I too are running into the same problem. I have get the odd custom order request and for a while now the lack of ability to create a digital one as previously is an oversight. I am having to turn people away and reconsider if I can offer custom digital items as a service at all because of how my inventory works and I certainly don't want to set these listings as public.

The other option that would help me too would allow variations in a digital listing but Etsy don't allow this either so instead any request I receive I will need to send them to an alternative website - once I find a solution.

Re: Can't create a Custom Order as a Digital Item

Why on Earth does Etsy not allow the creation of a custom digital listing? So, the answer is to create a public listing for just one customer that is viewable by anyone? Talk about amateur hour. That's ridiculous.
