My pattern site has been hacked

Jump to solution

Hi everyone.

My pattern site has been hacked by a Japanese or Chinese, have no idea.

When I go to it: www.wikandah.com,  it opens a weird page in Japanese I guess. So, I don't know what to do, how to complain, as Etsy has no channel to contact. Anyone can help me please?

You can't.  It's owned by someone else now.  You can go to a web broker and make a purchase offer to get the name back, but that's about it.  Unless as I said you didn't get renewal notices and you can prove that to your domain registrar, in which case they might buy it back for you.  But that is a hellova lofty 'might' so don't get your hopes up.

Normally if you do not have auto-renew configured with your registrar, you will get a "you need to renew" notice about 90 days from the domain expiry date, then another 30 days and another 14 days.  Then if it expires they give you another 30 days before tossing the name into the defunct domain pile for others to grab if they want.  By then your registrar will no doubt say (a) you had plenty of notice, and / or (b) it's your responsibility to monitor the expiry date of your domain, and their emails are a courtesy only.

IOW, don't get your hopes up now.

I see that wikandahs.com - your name but with an 'S' is available to you.  Not a bad compromise and a lesson learned.

I looked at your shop from your name and don't see any foreign writings. I see leggings, earrings shirts which I assume are yours.

The wayback machine indexed your site in 2021 Oct but you've seemed to have ignored notices from your domain server that your renewal was required. So the site lapsed into the pile of former-but-now-available names and it was snatched up.

There is nothing at all Etsy can do about this. It is now owned by someone else.

If you can prove that you did not get a renewal notice then your complaint should be with the registar you used for your domain.

Are you sure that's the right URL for your Pattern site? I see the same that you do, Japanese I think. Contact Etsy: Dashboard, Community & Help, Contact Us.

oh yes, of course it is, since more than 5 years. I sent an email to Etsy, so I am waiting. Etsy contact is so bad, they too take long to answer

wikandah.com is registered to a chinese owner effective July 2022

Whois wikandah.com

Did you let your domain elapse?  You have to renew it periodically or the name is available for others to take without compensation.

Did your domain name lapse? It looks like it was registered July 19 - https://lookup.icann.org/en/lookup - and scooped up by a company that essentially purchases domain names that lapse in order to have the original people pay them to reclaim

All of your data is still safe with Pattern, but it's just not redirecting it to the proper URL, since someone else now owns it. If you don't want to purchase it back from the new owners, you can purchase a new URL and then presumably make your Pattern shop "point" to the new domain. (I don't use Pattern, so I'm not speaking from experience, but that's generally how it works).

Your site hasn't been hacked, and Etsy won't be able to assist you in re-obtaining a URL. In the meantime, you may be able to just use the default URL, which I believe is: YOURSTORENAME.patternbyetsy.com

Good luck!

Not a problem.  And note too that most every possible securing of that name (with the 's') is available to register under your name at the various sites.

Bookmark namecheckr - a great resource to find out if wher desired name is available.  Including Etsy.
