I have been dinged for not answering a message on Jan. 26, 2023 within when I did. It was just not in the message. I wrote the customer (REMOVED) a separate message on the same day.

So I believe this should not be counted against me but it is.

What can I do?

@GoodWordsJewelry: Probably almost everyone on this forum can sympathize with you but as it says right on your Star Seller page, you need to reply to the FIRST message of EVERY NEW INCOMING THREAD.

 

It does not matter who sent it, the subject matter, if it is a duplicate or blank or anything else. If it is SPAM then it should be marked as such. Those have always been the rules.

 

Etsy is now even putting a blue text warning / advisory (blue banner on desktop, and a blue dot on mobile) on those messages they consider to be a "new message" but should semantically be called a "new thread".

 

Unfortunately, Etsy has made it clear that they will not manually adjust Star Seller data. If the unanswered message is not a Help Request, at least for the time being, it appears that marking an unanswered message as SPAM (even after the 24 hour deadline has passed) will cause your reply percentage to change in a day or two if the original message was within the current star seller period. Note that subsequent messages from that account may go directly to the SPAM folder.

All initial messages need a reply or be marked as spam. Even though you did answer your buyer, you did not do so within the message she sent. This looks like you did not reply to the message and will count against you. Remember to reply or spam every initial message. It is up to you if you want to try and spam it now, and see if it helps your numbers. Personally, I do not like to spam messages that are not spam, but it is done.

All you can do is learn from it and make sure you respond directly to any message in the future.

You say you didn't reply to the message, but you sent a separate message. The separate message doesn't count as a response to the original.  Whether you think that is fair or not, the rules are clear.  You need to respond to all NEW messages within 24 hrs.  You ignored the original message and sent a separate message.   The original message remains unanswered.  You could perhaps try marking the original message as spam, but given tomorrow is the end of the month, you would be lucky if the stats update in time for the badge assessments.
