I got a new message a few hours ago, but it was a message that I had sent to a buyer thanking them for the order and estimated shipping time. And the message I originally sent was on the 14th, not today. I am going to get dinged on star seller for not replying to this message, I feel if I reply to the message it won't make sense to the buyer. Has this happened to anyone else? I've been having some really strange things happen lately and doesn't seem that Etsy is there to help at all.
Thank you all for your reports and the additional details shared in-thread. We've relayed them to the team, and they are investigating. We'll share any further updates in this thread as soon as they are available.
Reply to the message with a comma or period so that it is replied to. They probably would ding you for that> I would assume it is a glitch
Etsy is always mucking around. It never ends so there are tech problems on the regular.
It may effect you so consider responding to it. You can say something brief about how you aren't sure if the other person received your message as it's been sent back to you due to a technical glitch. Anyone normal person isn't going to care and will either respond to you or ignore it.
Are you sure you weren't looking in the sent folder? Or maybe the customer replied.
no, it came in as a new message to me from the buyer. But it was the original message I had sent on the 14th. I even got a notice from Etsy that I had a new message from a potential buyer.
@meltheart: "I am going to get dinged on star seller for not replying to this message ..." Depends on whether the new Message is in a new incoming thread. The Star Seller metric is that the FIRST message of a EVERY NEW incoming thread must be replied to (or marked as spam) within 24 hours regardless of who sent it, the subject matter, if it is a duplicate or blank or anything else.
yes it came into my inbox as a new message and is the only message in the thread. I know that if I don't reply within 24 hours it will affect my star seller rating. Guess I will just send a small reply and not worry if they think that's weird
Sometimes a buyer will reply to your shipping notification and it sounds like this is what has happened. Is there no message at all from the buyer? I think I would respond asking if they have a query or alternatively mark it as spam.
no it was not the shipping notification, when I get an order I send a message to the buyer thanking them and telling them when it will be sent in the mail. It was my message that I sent to the buyer the day they ordered it almost 10 days ago. My message to the buyer came to my inbox this afternoon as a new message. The buyer never responded to the message. I've been noticing a lot of gliches lately that will affect my star seller rating next month.
@meltheart Just say "thank you" or an emoji.
I'd definitely reply to it - even if it was just a friendly, "Did you get the message I sent earlier? It just came back to me somehow and I did want you to know that (fill in the needed info). My apologies if I'm sending a duplicate message!" Something informal, one human to another. I'd bet the chances are good the customer will appreciate it, or commiserate with the craziness of the system.
This happened to me today as well. The new message appears in my inbox, however when I open the message, it is a message from me to the buyer. There is no message or response from the buyer. The last message I sent to them was on April 15th and that is all that it shows.
Its happened to me in both of me shops. I've decided not to worry about it.....
@LilyReed, Same happened here. The buyer message appeared out of thin air (it seemed anyway). I was half expecting a return request from the buyer afterward. But nothing else came through. Weird
It also happened to me today. A message I sent to a customer on April 17 was sent to me today.
Considering the variations glitch that's also occurring right now, it's making me nervous in regard to what might break next and why these things are occurring, and we could all do with less things to rattle our nerves right now with all that's happening with the current administration.

That's what's happening to me too!
Happened to me as well about an hour ago as well. Two messages I sent to customers on April 7th thanking them for their orders, and no response from the customers. Their orders are already delivered.
I'm having same issue with all the messages I recently sent to customers. Must be an Etsy glitch that they will hopefully fix soon. I'm not going to bother my customers with a second message.
Anyone having this issue: take a screenshot of the message and send it to Etsy support (if you can find a relevant topic in the support portal). Let them know what happened. Hopefully they will tell you if it will affect you customer service metrics for star seller. If you could report back and let others know what the deal is then that would be great (all supposing you get a reply of course).
There is something wrong with the Matrix today. Literally just came here to see what's the what since I too just had an "unread" message that I sent a buyer on the 7th! It's my message to them thanking them for their order and letting them know when it will ship. They never replied back which isn't unusual. I've had dozens of messages since then both back and forth with other clients/potentials and all of them show normal, just this random message from nearly 3 weeks ago came up as new.
Just another exciting day at Etsy!
This is happening to me too. I had 6 messages and when I opened them, they were messages I send to customers when their order is shipped.
I had the same thing happen to me today.
I had 2 from the 14th and 15th.
Emojis count. Reply to these with a heart.
@PinkBirdCottage There is nothing to reply to. It is the message I sent to the buyer, sent back to me as a new message. I'd literally be replying to myself.
