Items automatically categorized as 'Designed by' when they should fall under 'Made by'

Jump to solution

With the new rollout, I am seeing all of my items are automatically listed as "Designed by FirstCampaign" (this shows on the item listing) even though most of my items should fall under "Made by". Anyone else experiencing this? I tried to edit the new "Core details" section ("Who made this item?", etc), but still says "Designed by". Maybe just a bug in the initial rollout?

I just want to summarize everything for now since it seems like a few people are having a similar technical issue~~

—I encourage everyone having this issue to let Etsy know. It seems like just a temporary bug with the initial rollout— fingers crossed! There is a survey for this rollout linked at the bottom on this page : https://www.etsy.com/seller-handbook/article/1276491338090

—Seems like within a single shop, some handmade items are showing the correct tag (Handmade by...) while other handmade items from the same shop are not (incorrectly showing Designed by, etc)

—Some folks are having success editing the new "Core details" section in the listing edits. Personally, completely filling out this new form on my 100% handmade items made no difference— still says "Designed by..."

—Someone wondered if having a production partner for any of your items might be effecting your whole shop. Another shop commented that they have never had a production partner and they are having the same issue with some of their items.

I looked at one of your listings and it says it was manufactured in Northern California but your shop location is New Mexico, so it's picking up that you are not physically making each piece. "Made by" means you are doing everything with your two hands, not outsourcing.

"Manufactured in North Carolina" is just a detail I add about the paint I use on some of my items, not the item itself. Even items that do not have the paint listed under the description say "Designed by". I appreciate your feedback tho— perhaps I will alter my description to make it clear I am referring to the paint only.

Ah, I see. I think it's picking up on that. I would avoid using the word "manufactured".

It still seems strange that this is effecting all my other listings as well... All my items that are entirely made by me were stated as such when I made the listing. But seriously very, very good feedback. I am gonna change my wording on my listings so there is no confusion for the customer!

Same with me. I tried to get the support, and they said, "Thank you for you recommendation on having a made by option, we will pass it along to our developers.".

Their support is a joke. All my items are made by hand, and now labeled as Designed by and i cannot change it. On the other hand, a seller selling TEMU items get to have Made by on their items.

Again, Etsy does it again. Ruin the experience for the real makers and favor the resellers.

I definitely understand the frustration! Hopefully this is just a bug in the initial rollout. I tried contacting Etsy support as well, but haven't heard back quite yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will be an easy fix!

@AspendosWoodworking

I wonder if you changed your shop location from New Jersey to the city you live in if that would correct it.

You can change this. it's hidden in the production partners tab. You'll have to edit each listing as there is no way to bulk edit,

@AspendosWoodworking

Could the changeover have picked up the 'designed by' in your about section, where you refer to furniture you built that got you started on your (very awesome!) shop?

If you took it out would etsy hopefully auto correct?

I've just commented the exact same thing on there youtube video, i would recommend giving the comment a like or adding your own 2 cents as i'm guessing they will actually see the comments and not look at what people put in the forums, bit insulting to be matched with others who do POD and doesn't look great from a customers standpoint, also makes it seem like were all one shop and one company is producing the items

Hi! I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing the same thing! I don't see any comments on the YouTube video and wonder if the comments are restricted. I will keep as eye out for it and definitely upvote if I see it. I am hoping this is just a bump in the initial rollout!

@Hertfordweaver I live in River Edge, New Jersey. Where do you get the idea that i live somewhere else.

Edit, I have just realized what you meant and made the change. Sorry about the misunderstanding. Didn't make a difference.

I thought I saw just New Jersey on your home page. It says Rivers Edge. I have no other ideas as to what may cause it.

In my opinion, Josh should have it as "Designed & Made by (shop name)" not as a separate entity. It leaves too much of a loophole and could be confusing for buyers. I mean, first we design it, then we make it.....right?

@SereneGarlands  Agree with this. For those who use a Production Partner, I can see "Designed By" only. But for those who both design and make the item, the Label should say exactly that: "Designed and Made By."

There is a Survey at the end of the Announcement. But surely this both "Designed and Made By" is so obvious, we really need to say it? I'm betting Etsy already knows. Although I don't know the reason both Labels would not be an option (when they are both accurate).

@SereneGarlands  I agree with this!  I don't only make my things, I make the patterns for them as well.  They are designed and made by me!  Etsy missed the boat again.

It's kind of a murky area.  I design the item and I create the pattern  by incorporating the design, but it is up to the buyer to actually make the item.  Although I do have a finished product, it's not the ultimate finished product.

@NoFrogsAllowed   I design the patterns that I use to make my things.  There should be a category called Designed and Made by . .  for the sellers who actually do both - and there are many of us.  I'm sure most of the legitimate jewelers are designing their own work AND making it.  I made it very clear in the survey how I felt about these limiting categories, but I won't hold my breath waiting for changes.

@JustMeToo

You can always put something like "exclusive design" in your title and/or description.

My products have always been labeled as handmade which was always kind of weird, because they are designs and not a final product, but now they are labeled as designed by and I'm lumped in with all the pod peeps.  Thinking I'm not real happy about that.

@NoFrogsAllowed   Exactly!  That's what I'm hating!  I want Designed by. . .added to mine, but thousands of POD have it, and it often isn't true!  At least mine really ARE designed by me, as are yours.  Some of the ideas are good but they are never thorough, and too many things aren't well thought out before launching.

Re: Items automatically categorized as 'Designed by' when they should fall under 'Made by'

The problem is not only the implementation but also the large number of "exceptions" and how to account for them.

If you designed the pattern and made the item then it should be 'Designed And Made By', but if you are using someone else's pattern then it is only 'Made By'.

It is understandable that digital is 'Designed By' but POD should be 'Designed By x and Made By y'.

We are a supply shop but we have items which we design and have custom made for us yet everything is labeled as 'Sourced By'.

So the automated system uses the lowest common denominator method - and clearly gets it wrong in a significant number of cases.

Not defending Etsy here, but the only to implement this would be to add more choices to the listing edit form. However considering how many wholesale items are listed as 'Handmade' could one blindly trust the selections made by the seller? And how do you police it without vetting every listing?

Your mug listings say "FirstCampaign made this item with help from
Printful, Charlotte, NC".

Offhand I would say that they may be designed by you but actually printed by Printful, - not made by you.

Yes, I completely understand this categorization on my mugs. Since I design them and they are printed by someone else, this is definitely the right category. But my stockings, bookmarks, scrunchies, etc that are all made by hand (I cut out the fabric, do the embroidery by hand, and paint by hand) should fall under the "Made by" category, should they not?
