Image Distortion Issue on Listings

Dear Etsy Community,

I’m experiencing a frustrating issue with my uploaded images. My paintings are appearing horribly distorted, especially when zooming in. This is the first time I’ve encountered this problem—previously, my uploads displayed perfectly fine with no distortion.

I always ensure that I upload high-resolution images with large dimensions, yet the issue persists across multiple sizes and formats (PNG, JPG). Despite trying different aspect ratios and resolutions, the distortion remains.

Has anyone else faced this issue recently? I would appreciate any advice on why this is happening and how I can resolve it.

That is really bizarre. I can see how the images are being squashed when zoomed in. And looking at the html code, it's showing those squashed dimensions too. Had you done any adjusting with Etsy's crop tool when uploaded? Have you tried deleting & reuploading some of the images? I looked at another one of your paintings, & it is not being distorted. This is very weird.

I’ve been troubleshooting this issue by saving my images in both JPG and PNG formats with different sizes, ranging from 3,000 pixels up to 8,000 x 7,000 pixels at 72dpi. Unfortunately, the distortion still appeared.

However, when I changed the aspect ratio to 4:3, the distortion disappeared. The problem is that all of my paintings are vertical, and using 4:3 adds huge black spaces on the sides, which is not an ideal solution for me.

Etsy recommends 4:3 ratio (horizontal or square) I believe. If you have an image editing app, perhaps you can plop your tall images into a canvas that has white on the sides to fill in the empty space? 

I save most of my vertical images to 2200 x 2933 which seems to work out fine.

Having issues as well. The system not saving edits and keeps reverting. Also the changes of images used to load immediately so you can see what it looks like in shop now it takes a long time. I have also a requested a grid and guideline so people can see what an image looks like in cropped verison and also full square. Also alt text should be immediately populated from title into alt text. Amazon does this automatically.

Actually, from my end, I can see the uploaded image instantly but with same distortion issue.

@CuriousApothecary  Etsy does use the product title as default for alt-text. It is added to the html code which you can view on each page... they just don't show you the alt text on the listings page. They give you the option to add your own unique alt text there instead.

@ThirdRowCenter   Your listing photos need to be square 4:3

Etsy's requirements especially for the thumbnail does not work well with vertical listings.  The thumbnail focuses on the center of the photo.  With vertical it is a different spot than with square.

And the pixels should be at least 2000.  You can play around with that to see what is optimal for your camera and the photos for listing on Etsy.  Too high pixels and the photo won't load.

My listings are over 2000px. I never had this problem before, so it's something Etsy has changed. And square is not 4:3, it's 1:1. So I'm a little confused on your notes.
