I just opened my shop a few weeks ago. I'm going on overseas to visit a relative next week, and I'm wondering how I'll be able to check on my shop. Etsy sends a code to my phone to allow me to open it, but my phone service won't work once I'm out of the country. If they sent the code to my e-mail I'd be fine.
My shop is just digital downloads right now, and I have only one listing so far, so it's not like I need to be in constant contact. But I'm going to be gone quite awhile, and I want to check it periodically. Also, If I can get access to a good scanner, I'm hoping to upload more art, but that's very much up in the air.
When I signed up there was something mentioned about an app instead of the code. Is that what I need to do?
Hi.
Your shop is nowhere near being complete yet, so I wouldn't worry about that. Maybe even put it on vacation mode, if you're going to be gone a long time. You need more listings, shop policies, your location shown, tags.....lots of things you haven't done yet.
Thanks for the feedback.
I understand what your saying, but I can't do any of those things if I can't open my shop. I'm going to be gone two months
You said you are leaving next week? Maybe you could do some of it. I don't know how long you planned the trip, but if you knew a while, it probably would have made sense to not open the shop until you got back. Hope things work out for you!
I've never been issued a code as I utilize my typical login information to check my shop when I'm traveling. I'm wondering if there has been an issue when setting up your account? I'm bumping this thread up for you so hopefully a savvy seller will have more information. In the mean time I would suggest contacting Etsy directly to ask them why you need a code to access your shop and how to remedy the issue. Enjoy your trip.
When I signed up the information said it was a security measure.
@NancyQstudio I think she means she has 2 factor authentication set up for when she logs in.
I’m not exactly sure how to guide you but wanted to say be very careful about using someone else’s computer to access your shop, even if you’re using your own password or verification code.
A friend of mine opened a shop last year and went on vacation about a month later. She used a different computer to access her shop and soon after was shut down with no explanation as to why. It took her a few weeks to actually get through to someone at Etsy who told her her shop had been closed because a “possible security issue” had been detected. She jumped through all the necessary hoops but it was still another week or so before she was able to reopen.
With 1 item listed just deactivate it and relist it when you return... Easy Peassy...
Well, for one thing I'm hoping to add more items.
I doubt if anything will happen with your shop with one item which is a Christmas item. If it were me, I would deactivate that listing and then pick up and carry on with your shop when you get back.
Otherwise, yes, download the app and you will be unlikely to have to sign in to that via a telephone code if you stay logged in.
There are two seller apps for your phone - the Sell in Etsy app, which has a white icon with orange text, and the newer Etsy Seller app, with the blue icon.
Of course, you'll still need cell service. 2 months is a long time. If you are rather new, I suggest you play it safe and go on vacation mode before you leave.
no, it is enough with wifi so don't need cell service.
I believe you can turn off the security code requirement. I did it recently when I opened a new shop because it’s not convenient for me to go through that every time I log in, which is frequently. This is a relatively new thing they require now, older shops may not even be aware of it, I know I wasn’t. Check in your shop settings area.
I'm pretty sure I can't turn it off. I've checked there a couple of times. But thanks. I'll check again.
I agree with the other sellers here that you should just put your shop on vacation if you are gone for 2 months.
Will your phone work on wifi? Because then you can still use your phone, and a web browser to access the internet while you're away.
Just be sure to log into Etsy before you leave so that your phone has Etsy cookies on it, and don't log out....so Etsy will recognize your device as trusted.
My mother went to England 6 months ago for a month and didnt have any problems with Etsy. Neither have I when I travel to other countries and I've been here 12 years.
I guess I'm not explaining myself very well. I realize I'm not going to get much traffic with one item. But I am going to have a fair amount of free time while I am away. I just quit my job, and I start my new job when I get back. My schedule will be a lot busier then. Now, whether I will have the ability to upload is very much unknown, but if I can, I want to. But I can't upload if I can't open my shop. And the App I'm referring to wasn't the Etsy app. It was something for security.
You cannot publish any new listings, but if I am not mistaken, you can send them to draft and then publish them in one go when you get home, that might help?
I'm going to agree that the best thing you can do is put your shop in vacation mode while you're away. It's unlikely anything will happen, but if you do get questions or anything, and you can't access your shop, you could be doing more harm than good.
Does Etsy do the Authenticator thing now? I stay logged in since I am at my desk 18 hours a day. I hate 2 factor. My fingerprint should be enough thank you very much. Maybe that is the code the OP is talking about?
And I know you weren't asking about if you should or shouldn't go on vacation mode but if you get overseas and can't find a wifi signal somewhere, someplace, (even the golden boobs have free wifi) and if you can't access your shop, find a computer (library?) and then put your shop on vacation or off vacation as the situations calls for.
Safe travels!

If you are logged into the Etsy app it shouldn't be asking you to log in every time. Never has for me. Neither on the old or new app. So the security measure wouldn't be a problem.
Are you giving up your phone number? Depending on your provider you could keep your service on, tell them you will be traveling, then have it on flight mode most of the time, use wifi, and only use data when you need to. That is how I do it when I travel internationally. I do put my shop on vacation however, I just would not ever be without a phone completely.
I'll have wifi, but not phone service. It's fine. I was in a different country for six weeks a little over a year ago, and I had no phone service. As long as I can e-mail, I'm good.
Thanks everyone.
I found my answer here. https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/115015569567?segment=shopping
Use the app, it should not be asking for a two factor authentication code while you are using it (and are not “logging out” after each use). Only time I have had to use the code is when I delete the app due to a bug and then reinstall. But normal use of the app should not trigger an authentication log in code.
Do watch out you aren’t going to a non Etsy selling country as that could cause issues. May I ask what country you will be visiting?
