Changing Email Address - Old email no longer active

I need to change my email address.  The address I put in gives me the below error.  The email address it's referring to is no longer active on Etsy.  I even attempted to log in with this email address and it tells me it's no longer an active account and can't be accessed.

• The email address you have entered is already in use on Etsy. Please note that any given email address can only be used on Etsy once

Did you close the other email before changing the email on Etsy?  I believe the code is sent to the old email address.
