I've been looking at several methods to create my own CPSIA tracking labels. I found most of the helpful info here in these forums and I've tweaked some of the ideas to create a very easy printable label, which I can sew into the seam of my stuffed toys. Just print, cut and sew them in. I've posted full instructions here http://sockmonkey.shopping.officelive.com/labels.aspx and I've also included a template for the labels to make it easier. These are 100% cotton labels printed with ink jet (CMYK) ink printer, so they are CPSIA compliant, no lead or pthalates are in them, so no need to have them tested.

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

Thanks for the help! Do you know if I have to put the fabric type on there. I was going to print them like this:

Fancy Shmancy
wwww.ilovefancyshmancy.etsy.com
9890 N. Loop Rd.
Pensacola, FL
Made In USA of Imported Fabrics

Is this enough info? Too much? Thanks just trying to do this right!

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

I loveFancySchmancy:

You don't have to put your actual address, just your city and State is fine...

Yes, you have to put the fiber content and place of origin (ex: 100 % cotton, made in China)

Also, for the FTC requirements, you have to include washing instructions (I THINK this may only apply if you embellish the fabric, like with an applique, and the embellishment changes the washing instructions....check the FTC website for more info.

I'm also www.PicCircusDesigns.etsy.com

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

I finally decided to get down to it and make FTC labels. I used this thread as a guide and they came out great! My Walmart had the June Tailor fabric sheets on clearance for $3 each ( I bought the last 3:). I got 30 labels per page so it only costs me $0.03 per label. Thank you so much for sharing your know how!

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

I would love to see samples of what everyone is doing. Currently, I'm using up the labels I purchased months ago, but I'm seriously thinking of giving this a try.

Care to share a pic? Thanks.

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

Um... CMYK ink for offset printing (big commerical presses) are exempt but that does NOT mean that CMYK ink for an inkjet or laser printer are automatically exempt.

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

ellemaelab, the CPSC has stated that CMYK inks are exempt. Do you know something that they don't? Laser printers don't use the same inks that ink jet printers use.

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

Thank you OP for the instructions and everyone else for putting your heads together.

TropAcool et. al.: I wondered about the fraying, too. In addition to the middle fold I turned the edges under. I actually folded the side edges until they touched in the middle and then folded in half. This worked from a fraying standpoint, but made a very thick bit of fabric to sew through. I couldn't get the needle to go through at first, but then I moved the needle by hand( not using the foot pedal) and after the first few stitches it went ok. I have only sewn one in so far, and because it was so hard to pin in place it came out crooked. But I did wash it and it came out looking great -aside from the crooked part that is. If I (or a fellow etsy craftsperson) can figure out a way to make this go into the seam better, turning the side edges under is a viable option.

I like Tutucute's suggestion to post photos of our attempts and our successes. Can we attatch a photo to a convo? Something makes me think not. Maybe Flicker?

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

So I was just wondering... did anyone have a great idea come to them about the fraying edges issue?
