I've been looking at several methods to create my own CPSIA tracking labels. I found most of the helpful info here in these forums and I've tweaked some of the ideas to create a very easy printable label, which I can sew into the seam of my stuffed toys. Just print, cut and sew them in. I've posted full instructions here http://sockmonkey.shopping.officelive.com/labels.aspx and I've also included a template for the labels to make it easier. These are 100% cotton labels printed with ink jet (CMYK) ink printer, so they are CPSIA compliant, no lead or pthalates are in them, so no need to have them tested.

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

I have a laser printer, black only. Looks like I can't go further than step 1.

What are the chances of someone making me some labels? I asked in Alchemy a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't heard any response.

Thanks for sharing, I will need labels if I plan on creating any new items, which I do. I didn't even know this existed, gosh what else is out there I'm missing? Thanks so much!

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

Marked. I have heard from someone else that they don't fray much, as they have sort of finish on them. I've also read where someone used iron-on interfacing on the back of the labels. It made them a little stiff, but then she was able to keep three sides unfinished. I haven't tried it yet, but am going to with my next set of labels.

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

tropAcool, I've been using this method for awhile now (with the June Tailor sheets), abd I found that the two sides of the labels that aren't sewn down do fray. I cut the sides with a pinking shears, and that reduces the fraying. You might want to try that. I like the way it looks too.

Also, the June Tailor sheet instructions say that the labels should NOT BE WASHED WITH DETERGENT after being sewn into your items. (Most busy moms use detergent. I checked with the company to find out why they advise not to use it. Their answer was that some detergents are fine and don't cause fading, but the ones with added bleach (even color-safe bleach) sometimes make the labels bleed. I make kids' aprons and other items that are machine washable, so at the suggestion of a June Tailor rep, I put this on my labels:

Cold water wash. No bleach or detergent with bleach. Dry at warm/delicate setting. Remove promptly. Warm iron touchup if needed.

I've found that Arm & Hammer detergent and just about any other one without any bleach additive works very well. The labels are still nice after repeated washings. Hope this helps.

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

Thanks so much for all the helpful info. I'm going to try to cut the edges w/ pinking scissors so they'll fray less. Great suggestion. Does anyone know if high thread count cotton sheets cut up and ironed onto freezer paper work instead of the June Tailor sheets? I thought I'd give it a try because I'm guessing it's quite a bit cheaper. I figured the high thread count makes the fabric more flat (less and hopefully offers a better surface for clean printing.
Any thoughts?

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

I'm so overwhelmed with all of this CPSIA info that I'm considering closing one or both of my shops. *sad*

Re: Just want to share my CPSIA handmade label instructions

BabyCrochetShop,
Please don't close them. Hang in there and don't let this CPSIA defeat you. It's alot to swallow but the more you read about it here on the forums the more it makes sense.
Hugs,
April

I will be making baby blankets, burp cloths and wipes and doublers in the future but trying to get all the info and labels I need clear in my head first. Also, I am going to be sticking to the bare basics when making these otherwise I will go crazy.

autumnraincreations:

Thanks for your post. I think now that I'm learning more, it is more managable. I have been to Walmart twice looking for the labels from this post and also to JoAnn's, but I can't find them. I am going to keep searching though.

Thanks so much! :)
