I don't totally understand

I'm wanting to make some baby blankets and am wondering if I understand this correctly. I need to have:
-my business name
-contact info
-washing instructions
-and fabric content

on the tags? Anything else that needs to go on them or am I understanding this wrong?

Re: I don't totally understand

For a crafter the CPSIA label must include at minimum :
* Your company or shop name (or RN# if your company's name appears elsewhere on a permanant label on the product)
* The city, state/territory, & country where the item was completed
* The date of manufacture or completion of the product
* If you make repeats of the designs then you may also need a batch number, but only if the pieces are mostly identical looking and made of the same exact raw materials as each other and where made or completed on the same day.
For CPSIA Tracking labels
http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/sect103policy.pdf
http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/sect103.html#103q8

The FTC label needs at the very least:
- Your company, shop name, or RN# (use which every does not appear on the CPSIA label so not to repeat)
- Fiber content by %
- Fiber's country of origin
- Washing and care instructions
Other info may be required depending on the exact fabrics use like registered trademark info for fabrics that are followed by a ® or the internation symbols for care instructions.
For fabric and fiber items FTC Labeling requirements
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/business/textile/bus21.shtm#covered
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/business/textile/bus50.shtm

In some cases an item maybe excluded from needing a FTC label but still require a CPSIA label to be compliant. As both agencies have regulations about the appearance and what visable at a glance you may need two seperate labels.

In additional, even if your basic raw materials are all exempt, you still need to be able to tell the government, if ever asked, exactly what components went in to the making of a specific piece. So you will need to keep records that stay in your possession of any and all documents from your suppliers that either show the component is exempt or has test results and be able to link them to what products you used them in.

Re: I don't totally understand

You can use a permanent marking pen to add the month/yr to the label.

Re: I don't totally understand

On one of these forums, I can't remember which one or which seller, but she used a great line which I ended up putting on mine. She had it like this:

10JFMAMJJASOND11 This way your labels will last two years if need be. Just use a permanent quilt marking pen and make a small dot under the year and another under the month.

Thought this was a great idea.

Re: I don't totally understand

Thanks. I don't think I'm going to bother as this is going to end up costing too much to even be able to make anything on items.

Re: I don't totally understand

Check out some of the people here on etsy that make labels I used JennifersJewels, you can find some good prices and you don't have to buy a lot to start out. There is another forum under CPSIA that can take you through the steps of making your own on your printer. I haven't had time to try yet but you might want to check it out.

http://bostonbeanies.blogspot.com/2010/02/labels-are-for-cans-not-crafters.html

I put together a list and the requirements as best as I understand them on my blog. There are some great Etsy sellers and for those buying in bulk, I listed some online sellers as well.

If anyone has other sellers to add, let me know.

Re: I don't totally understand

From what I understand, yarn is exempt. So would you still need labels on a baby blanket made completely out of yarn?

Re: I don't totally understand

The exemption list is only about the lead testing requirerments, any other CPSIA, CPSC, or other government agency's laws and regulations must still be followed. All labeling both the FTC and the CPSIA still must be done. If the blanket is marketed or sold as a product for children under 4 then phthalate testing or test certificates is also required and if the blanket has embellishments or other decorations that are not necessary to the function of the item small parts testing may also be needed.

Re: I don't totally understand

As I understand it, yarn is exempt from testing, and further, yarn hats, if made from cotton yarn do not need an FTC label but need a CPSIA label. I have detailed the differences in the link above in my blog.

Can't wait for my new labels to come in...

Thanks this was me, and it is so very easy to print them off yourself. I make a couple of stitches with thread under the year and the month when I sew the label into the facing of my garments. These are in addition to the size and FTC labels that I sew on the bottom of the CPSIA labels. I also generally sew a woven designer label to the outside of the garment on the hem area.

FayeMaloneDesigns

Yes, that was you, and a great idea. I had been fretting over those labels for a couple of weeks when I saw your post. Thanks!! Now, the idea of stitches instead of the quilt pen, I like that. Now I won't have to worry about the ink containing lead.
Next time I point out how smart you are I'll remember you name.
