does anyone else wonder about this RE: CPSIA?

Am I just paranoid?
Sometimes I think that CPSIA is just a diversion or purposeful distraction from what is much more urgent:

the countless artificial additives, extra sodium, etc that are put in food sold on grocery store shelves, without really knowing their long term effects...include in that tap water, stuff that is consumed.

Really, I'm scared to death about the hook and eye on the back of the neck of the dress I just finished for that 8 yo. I'm sure it's going to give her lead poisoning! Heavens to sake have any of you looked at the sodium content in those heat and eat stew containers that you can take to work and zap in the microwave? Over 2000mg of sodium! Instant high blood pressure!

Annie, your store is fabulous, had to heart you to come back later.

thank you faye...yes yes!! not to mention what is leaked into the food when it is zapped in those containers....seriously it boggles the mind that the FDA allows what it allows then this CPSIA thing becomes so front-and-center??!!

Funny you should mention this!

I was just thinking about hook&eyes because I'm about to use one. Well, just hook part for the saddle of a felt horse.

From the googling I did it appears they're made of mostly steel with perhaps a bit of iron or copper. Lead weakens metals because it's soft and it wouldn't do well in a fastener, I don't think.

I've worn quite a few ill-fitting bras in my day that would have been too much pressure for lead filled hooks&eyes.

Re: does anyone else wonder about this RE: CPSIA?

I don't think the CPSIA is an attempt at distraction at all. Dangerous imported children's goods is a very real issue.

I do think the law is extremely reactionary and not as well thought out as it could have been, though.

It's kinda like when a few kids are acting up in the back of the classroom and the teacher takes recess away from the whole class. It's not fair. But the point is made that acting up will not be tolerated.

There have been laws against lead in toys for years and years. And the laws have been ignored.

Now we've all lost recess because of the bad kids in the back of the room.

seriously, food can be so bad! not to mention all the terrible things in makeup and deodorant ... it seems like if they're going to make a big deal out of one thing, they should make a big deal out of it all!

did not say that it isn't a very real issue...it should have been addressed a very long time ago before the saturation of toys (lead-laden) into the market...don't understand why it was not stopped at the source. (the resellers-crafters who unknowingly purchase said materials, secondary holders are not to blame.)

Can you resell clothing(for children) with the new tags still on them. surely they've been inspected for lead. Just wondering as I purchased some a while back and wouldn't want to get in trouble for that.

Re: does anyone else wonder about this RE: CPSIA?

If we wanted to behave really badly we could just inundate the local health dept with requests to test the hazards for small kids in our home.Warning this idea , is not intended for actual use. I can see a huge downside with this unless it was done on some kind of national scale to make a point. I think I read about a country where all the women went on strike for a day just to have thier agreed upon issues addressed and it worked. OH wait till Ricky (Recardo) gets home.........but then I'm always in trouble.

Re: does anyone else wonder about this RE: CPSIA?

I thought I was referring to the OP. I don't think salty food is more urgent than poisonous toys. When you buy salty food you know what you're buying. It's on the label. Toys that contain lead are not labeled to inform consumers that they contain lead.

I totally agree it would make much more sense to stop this at the source.

I think that's what they were meaning to do, actually. They had the major source of toys...those manufactured in overseas factories...in mind when they wrote this law.

They just completely forgot to factor in those of us who buy our supplies in the US...a great deal of us from retail stores.

Re: does anyone else wonder about this RE: CPSIA?

I hear you, Dannielle and could not agree more. I just don't understand the failure to equally address and protect as far as consumption of processed food, etc...some families are on a strict budget and cannot afford to feed all organic because it is so much more expensive, which seems is what would have to be done in order to avoid the bad...speaking from frustration here...both in the sense that CPSIA is so 'after-the-fact'...and do not also understand why they are not taking this to the original manufacturers..if the dangerous goods are not put on the market in the first place, we unsuspecting buyers, crafters, will not buy them...I am trying to learn more here and appreciate everyone's input.

yes and what about the MSG that is supposed to be so bad for us and is in almost every food in the grocery store. And whatever happened to apartame being dangerous? Nothing happened except it's in every brand of chewing gum in my supermarket.

Re: does anyone else wonder about this RE: CPSIA?

My pet peeve is fabric softeners and mass-market (stinky) perfumes. Those things are loaded with phthalates!

So thanks to the CPSIA, parents everywhere will be able to buy phthalate-free clothing for their little ones (sarcasm). Then they'll wash the clothes in phthalate-loaded fabric softener and put the poisons right back on the clothes :-P

i don't use any of that stuff anymore, eclectica...wash with baking soda, clean with vinegar...and don't use chlorine bleach because i'm convinced it is what caused my dog to get cancer...still beating myself up about it because I used to clean the kitchen floors with watered down bleach, very watered down mind you, but still....

of course the canine oncologist would not tell me what she thought could be the culprit and when i mentioned bleach and other things, she scoffed and made me feel like I was an idiot for even thinking it.

Actually I think they were trying to do something similar for testing for cosmetics, so after we fight this the bath and body and soap makers will probably be having to fight that again.

Re: does anyone else wonder about this RE: CPSIA?

I don't know if it's a diversion, I think it's all important, it's just not being handled the way it should.

How about tuna? Albacore tuna contains Mercury, also a heavy metal like lead. Did you know this? I didn't until recently. They don't think it's a "significant threat" so they do nothing. They have known this for years.

Check this out:
http://www.nrdc.org/health/effects/mercury/tuna.asp

According to this, I, as an adult, should only have 1 can of tuna every 12 days. When I was little, I had tuna almost every day. I don't know what I weighed then but according to this chart, a child should only have tuna once a month! They haven't banned tuna being sold for children.

Re: does anyone else wonder about this RE: CPSIA?

Dannielle- IMPORTED yeah. Mass manufacture from CHINA should be tested. Stuff you make at home ... from mass manufactured items, are not a concern. Therefore, it's ridiculous.
