BeaG: Congrats on your upcoming seventh Etsyversary! I love your main goal to "keep enjoying every minute of designing, creating and running my shop!" Personally, that's really inspiring, and I think that enjoying your work is the biggest motivator of them all.

Gena: I hear you. I'm the same way in that it helps so much to share goals and have a business buddy. I have a business buddy and we hold one another accountable by sharing our goals and then talking about our challenges. It's helps to keep ourselves on track and moving forward.

I love your advice of taking time to price items right. Right on!

My top goal for this year is branding. I've struggled with that since the beginning and I really want my shop, my packaging, everything to have a nice cohesive feel so that my customers feel that their purchase was a memorable experience!
________________________________

Great goal! I love the idea of tackling an area that's consistently proven a struggle. We'll be featuring branding content a bit later in the year. Until then, be sure to check out our existing resources: http://www.etsy.com/blog/en/2012/the-seller-handbook/#branding

And look around! Take lessons and gather tips from those who seem to have mastered the art of branding.

♥ Build on the success that I am having locally. The artisan fairs that I participated in during 2012 were very positive. Having my work featured in "Design New England" this January/February (a bi-monthly magazine published here in the northeast) has given my Etsy shop a significant visibility boost.

My goal is to make more concrete goals! Really! I have oodles of love for what I do, so much so that I tend to procrastinate doing the business side of my business. When you wear all the hats it can be so challenging to stay focused.

I did want to pass on a tip that has been very beneficial to me, and that is to get out there to art fairs, festivals, farmer's markets, school events, etc., ANYTHING. I started small at a tiny farmers market, and continued to apply to bigger and better venues. This is a terrific way to build up an audience. Just promoting myself within Etsy sometimes seems like a weird feedback loop; going to shows and having lots of cards to pass out can bring lots of new people in. You also get to have feedback right away as to which items attract attention, and which ones are complete duds.

Starting at small venues helps you learn without having to fork out the big bucks.
_________________________

I hear you about staying focused! It can be quite difficult. By brainstorming about your larger goals this early in the year, we are hoping you'll be able to isolate some small steps to take towards those larger goals, without getting so overwhelmed by a never ending list of to-do's.

I also love all this talk of craft fairs and local markets. While not technically on Etsy, I believe it all connects, and that building your brand presence locally can really help your business overall, on and offline. Get out there!

I love the confidence, hope, and ambition here. Reading through this thread, I identified some common goals:

1. Stock your shop (many of you are hoping to double your listings!).
2. Revise your inventory: Add new products, retire ones that aren't selling.
3. Refine your prices to make sure you're making a profit (as you should!).
4. Re-shoot/refresh your photographs. Constantly working to improve your photos is a great idea.
5. Promote/market your shop.
6. Work on your branding.
7. Hone your craft.
8. Hit a specific # of sales.
9. Expand business to sell in local shops, craft fairs, even farmers markets.
10. Take your business seriously as a "business" and in doing so take it to the next level.

These are all great. We really look forward to helping you reach these goals.

#1 Goal for 2013: Profitability!!!

Major milestones:
-launch treat of the month club subscriptions
-launch large party packs and treat towers/gift baskets for holiday season
-land two wholesale orders to local wine/cheese shops
-focus more on my blog: once a month posting isn't going to attract a following
-review my pricing formula and update items as needed
-solicit product photography to better showcase some items I find difficult to capture well
-create and list more high-end treat selections
-I hit 358 sales in the just under a year I've been here - I'd like to get to 1000 sales by the end of year 2

January 22 is my one-year business anniversary and I intend to have an action plan created by that date. I'm excited!

- Sell the same amount of products as I did in 2012, or a little more.
- Celebrate my 7th Etsyversary in June.
- Increase my marketing activities, to bring in new customers.
- Work on new products (and probably loose some others, since there is only one me and my chronic health issues, that allow me no more than a few active hours a day).
- My main goal: keep enjoying every minute of designing, creating and running my shop!

Having been open for only four+ months, I think I've worked out most of the kinks. In 2013, my goal is to:

• Double my listings. I inch ever forward, then end up selling a few items - not a bad problem to have really!

• Finish my "about" page

• Promote, promote, promote

And lastly, I look forward to my shop's first year Etsy anniversary at the end of August - it's been a wild ride and I've loved every minute of it!

@Amy - Yes, please do keep in touch. Knowing someone is watching is definitely a motivator for me. One thing I struggle with as a new business owner is being my own boss - I sometimes lack the self-discipline needed to excel.

My BIGGEST tip for new shops: Don't sell yourself short. Really sit down and calculate the cost of the materials for your craft, the time it takes to make etc, and read about how to price your items accurately and effectively. It might be scary at first, but it is SO worth it down the road!

Re: What's Your 2013 Goal?

My goals for 2013, as I head into my second year on Etsy are:

-To go over all my items to determine if I am charging enough to gain a profit.
-Get to the point where I can begin paying myself wages.
-Add a lot of new inventory, getting up to at least 50 listings at all time, but aim for 100
-Begin looking around to see where I might be able to sell locally.
-Brand myself, creating a better business card.
-Double my sales from last year.
-Have a greater variety of items, and a lot of each variety.
-Work several holidays ahead, so that when Easter rolls around I'm not working on Easter items, but Autumn items. I don't want to be frantically felting ornaments this Christmas again!
-Retake all of my old pictures so that they match the new ones, and improve my photography skills!

I think that's enough to work on this year!

@Amy YES!
I agree with Gena's top tip!

My #1 tip for new Etsy sellers: Promote outside of Etsy!

I love being active in the forums and passing knowledge on that was passed onto me. BUT, I think it's exhausting [for the forums] to see the newbies frustrated about lack of sales.
It takes more than great photos, primped tags and titles, and pinterest to get views and sales.
I always explain to newbies what they don't understand...our shops are like any other business...marketing is a must-do, it doesn't get done by itself [unfortunately] :)

Re: What's Your 2013 Goal?

I have some lofty goals for 2013:
1) Start taking my business seriously. Until this holiday season, I had been treating it as a hobby and not focusing on profit or growth.
2) Completely separate business revenue from my personal finances.
3) Develop and follow a comprehensive business plan.
4) Study trends and launch at least 2 fresh new lines to my shop.
5) Research and focus on improving SEO, branding and marketing.
6) Improve photography skills.
7) Build inventory! Since etsy is in addition to my full-time career, it’s important for me to have a healthy inventory for the holiday rush.

So far in 2013, I have already applied for a business license and trademark for my shop name. I have opened a business checking acct. I have sought out 2 local stores to sell my items. If I just stay focused, I know can grow! My favorite part about etsy, is seeing that I get out what I put in. Nothing is more motivating to me than that.

Good luck to you all in accomplishing your goals. I wish everyone a successful year!

I have a certain dollar amount I want to hit for 2013... my husband thinks it is ambitious but I think it is doable.

To that end I need to build back stock of inventory to higher numbers. I don't mean more listings (though I would like to do that too) I mean standing inventory of items already listed. This allows me to fill orders more quickly and do more business

I had been building a nice standing inventory and then this holiday season was so awesome it is like the locust came thru my shop LOL It has been challenging to rebuild this much inventory as I always put current orders first. I am seriously considering going into vaca mode for 2 weeks and just go on a massive inventory building binge. I almost think it may be more productive that way... I need to decide soon.

Santa also gave me a MUCH better camera so I am hoping that by this time next year to have most things in my shop rephotographed. I have some "commitment issues" when it comes to backgrounds LOL so I am going to try to reign myself in a bit more when I reshoot and have fewer backgrounds to be a bit more cohesive

On a personal note I am hoping to start making rings and items with fired stones (mostly because I want some tee hee) but I honestly don't see that in the shop in any big way this year... maybe next as I do have to watch the # of irons in the fire
