Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner

REVISED SEO TEAM POST:

Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Most searches on the Internet, including searches within Etsy, start with words called keywords. Words or phrases describing your product or service that you choose to help determine when and where your listings appear in Etsy Relevancy searches.

The keywords you choose are used to show your listings to shoppers. Select high-quality, relevant keywords for your listings to help you reach only the most interested shoppers, who are more likely to become your customers.

When someone searches on Etsy or on Google, your listing could be eligible to appear based on the similarity of your keywords to the shopper's search terms. Keywords are also used to match your ad to sites in the Google Network that are related to your keywords and ads.

A great keyword list can help improve the relevance and views of your listings. Find great keywords that shoppers use by using a keyword researdh tool like Google Adwords Keyword Planner.

Many people don't know how to use the Google Adwords Keyword Planner. Everyone wants good SEO and this is a good way to research keywords phrases not only for your listings titles, but also for your tags, main shop page, section names, and About page.

But before you begin, please watch this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAIcO9Uogq0

1. Create a gmail account.
2. Go to adwords.google.com or put in Google Adwords in the search bar.
3. Click on Create an Account
4. ***Very important step here*** Click on the blue highlighed words: SKIP GUIDED TOUR
5. Either click on the tab that says TOOLS and go down to keyword planner OR you might come to a page that says the following on the left side of the screen: Find new keywords and get search volume data. Click on the top box that says: Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category.
6. Go to the first box and start entering keyword ideas. Make sure you either hit enter after each keywordcategory. For example: jewelry, bracelets, clothing, art, etc.
7. Ignore the 2nd box totally.
8..Go down to the 3rd box that says: Enter or select a product
9. After you have exhausted your ideas, then go to the blue box at the bottom that says: Get Ideas.
10 Google Adwords will show you a blue graph at the top of the page and there will be 2 tabs: Ad group ideas (the default) and Keyword ideas.
11. If you click on the tab that says keyword ideas, Google Adwords will take you to all the ideas you have entered. On the right side you will see a column that says: Avg monthly searches. In that column are numbers for those searches. This is the only thing you'll need. The rest of it is for people wanting to buy Google Ads.
12. Ad group ideas have lists in categories by relevance in blue with a little number next to it. This number will tell you how many keywords are in that category. The avg. monthly searches in this group adds up to the total of the number within that list. When you click on the blue highlighted category, it will show you other keywords (and often long tail keywords) and the avg; monthly searches for each individual keyword. The "L" with the jagged line is the bar graph for each word and category. You can use this as a reference point to see how well that keyword or group of keywords performed in the last 12 months. It can help you make a determination as to whether or not the keyword is viable.

You can always add keywords by clicking on: Modify search in the upper right hand corner next to: Get ideas. Up at the top is a small box that has all the ideas that was originally entered. You can also add more keywords ideas there. Just remember to put a comma and a space between each keyword idea.

13 You can download the list of keywords for future reference under the down arrow key and download tab. The list of keywords can be opened in a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel and sorted into alphabetic order, average monthly search count or any other order that you would like.

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Hello :)
I'm having trouble with this :( Whenever I type keyword planner home into google and go to the link, it takes me to setting up a campaign and spending money. I've created a new account that isn't linked to my main one, and I still get the campaign page. According to the video, if I am signed in I should be taken to the keyword planner page, but I just can't get there. Is there a way to get round this or have I managed to lock myself out completely?

Tea Cat,

You will have to set up a new gmail account for Keyword Planner if you did not do step 4 above:
"***Very important step here*** Click on the blue highlighed words: SKIP GUIDED TOUR"

If you click on Skip Guided Tour,. you will not be asked to set up an ad campaign.

Tea Cat,

Did you ever get this to work? I was able to get past the first page but every time I attempt to use an email address it tells me that I can't use that domain name. When I use one of my accounts it tells me the email has already been used. I know this is user error!!!

Tea Cat,

Are you using a gmail account? Clean out your cache and then try. Create a new gmail account just for Google Adwords. If both of these don't work, post here again so we can help you figure it out.

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Google does not make the keyword planner easy to access! 😜
I actually ended up setting up an ad campaign and then suspending it as soon as I realized it was active. Now I have access to the keyword planner.

Buffalo Gal-

Create a new gmail account for just Google Adwords. That would probably be the best idea.

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Deborah,

I use, and recommend to others, 2 targeted keyword phrases and 2 or 3 general keyword phrases in each listing title. These same keywords should be used in the listing tags and sprinkled throughout the listing description. Additional keywords can be added to the listing tags. This works very well for Etsy searches. Sometimes Etsy sellers fill up the listing title with a lot of keywords and I am not sure that all those keywords are that effective.

What are "photo tags?'

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner

So all this tagging and keywords is quite overwhelming ... I can only do a bit at a time or my brain feels it's going to explode (I can't be the only one??) But I did manage to find some very good phrases on the Google Adwords that I haven't been using. Thank you for the super clear instructions - I couldn't have even started without all that help!

You are not the only one, Cormeen. Most people feel overwhelmed when first learning SEO. It sounds like you are beginning to understand the process. It will get better, I promise.

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner

I know what you mean Cormeen, it feels like learning a new language!
Speaking of which, I am British but based in France, when I tried to open a google Adwords account it sent me to the French Adwords site, by default, even though my gmail accounts are at google.com not google.fr. This is of no use to me because I list in English not French and translations for keywords are not litteral, anyone got any ideas how I might get around it please?

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Hi Mary - OMG this is such a help, thanks for the tips re adwords.
I've just completed a look at mine.
I've made a list of all those words I need to ad into my website and etsy.
BUT, and here is the question.
Where is the best place to put them, there are many.
In the about page, the tags, the product descriptions?
Where is best - I have about 40 more words to add in.

thanks
Elizabeth

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Hi again,
Also, can you confuse search engines and put too many adwords in. I guess not but just checking?
Thank you.

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Frenchy,

Change the Location on the left side of the page on Keyword Planner under Targeting, to United States and see if that helps.

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Hi Mary, I thought I had posted on this thread, but now do not see it. Hope I did not impose, as I do not see it now.

I am wondering, when entering my shop name in Etsy search bar, why only 6 of my items come up. I have many more than that and some have sold better than the ones that come up.

Thank you, great info here.

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Patsy,

To see your whole shop, patsypressedflowers, click on the "find shop names containing patsypressedflowers" link in the drop down menu. If you search for the keywords "patsypressedflowers" without making this selection, you will only see the listings that include yourshop name in the title or one of the tags.

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner

Thank you Mary. Finally figured that out, as the items that came up had my shop name as one of the tags.
Is it necessary to put your shop, name as a tag? I am redoing listings now and had started adding shop name in tags.

Yeah! I have been working with Keyword Planner, but in the search bar do I list each item I need keywords for followed by a comma, all at one time?
