REVISED SEO TEAM POST:
Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner
Most searches on the Internet, including searches within Etsy, start with words called keywords. Words or phrases describing your product or service that you choose to help determine when and where your listings appear in Etsy Relevancy searches.
The keywords you choose are used to show your listings to shoppers. Select high-quality, relevant keywords for your listings to help you reach only the most interested shoppers, who are more likely to become your customers.
When someone searches on Etsy or on Google, your listing could be eligible to appear based on the similarity of your keywords to the shopper's search terms. Keywords are also used to match your ad to sites in the Google Network that are related to your keywords and ads.
A great keyword list can help improve the relevance and views of your listings. Find great keywords that shoppers use by using a keyword researdh tool like Google Adwords Keyword Planner.
Many people don't know how to use the Google Adwords Keyword Planner. Everyone wants good SEO and this is a good way to research keywords phrases not only for your listings titles, but also for your tags, main shop page, section names, and About page.
But before you begin, please watch this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAIcO9Uogq0
1. Create a gmail account.
2. Go to adwords.google.com or put in Google Adwords in the search bar.
3. Click on Create an Account
4. ***Very important step here*** Click on the blue highlighed words: SKIP GUIDED TOUR
5. Either click on the tab that says TOOLS and go down to keyword planner OR you might come to a page that says the following on the left side of the screen: Find new keywords and get search volume data. Click on the top box that says: Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category.
6. Go to the first box and start entering keyword ideas. Make sure you either hit enter after each keywordcategory. For example: jewelry, bracelets, clothing, art, etc.
7. Ignore the 2nd box totally.
8..Go down to the 3rd box that says: Enter or select a product
9. After you have exhausted your ideas, then go to the blue box at the bottom that says: Get Ideas.
10 Google Adwords will show you a blue graph at the top of the page and there will be 2 tabs: Ad group ideas (the default) and Keyword ideas.
11. If you click on the tab that says keyword ideas, Google Adwords will take you to all the ideas you have entered. On the right side you will see a column that says: Avg monthly searches. In that column are numbers for those searches. This is the only thing you'll need. The rest of it is for people wanting to buy Google Ads.
12. Ad group ideas have lists in categories by relevance in blue with a little number next to it. This number will tell you how many keywords are in that category. The avg. monthly searches in this group adds up to the total of the number within that list. When you click on the blue highlighted category, it will show you other keywords (and often long tail keywords) and the avg; monthly searches for each individual keyword. The "L" with the jagged line is the bar graph for each word and category. You can use this as a reference point to see how well that keyword or group of keywords performed in the last 12 months. It can help you make a determination as to whether or not the keyword is viable.
You can always add keywords by clicking on: Modify search in the upper right hand corner next to: Get ideas. Up at the top is a small box that has all the ideas that was originally entered. You can also add more keywords ideas there. Just remember to put a comma and a space between each keyword idea.
13 You can download the list of keywords for future reference under the down arrow key and download tab. The list of keywords can be opened in a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel and sorted into alphabetic order, average monthly search count or any other order that you would like.

Hi Cindi. Thanks for that. That gets me further than I was getting before. But this seems to give the search rate for the keyword that you enter only. I think on the keyword planner it also gives alternatives to the keyword that you have entered, along with the monthly search rates for them. Thats the kind of information I am hoping to find. Not sure if there is a way around it like there used to be. Oh well. Thanks anyway. Very kind of you to pass on this info. :)

Alan: There's a way to "pause" your ad campaign. Unless it got changed recently, you should be able to find the pause button once the keyword suggestions come up. It isn't very intuitive. I had to hunt for it. I think it was toward the top of the page. So, you set up the campaign and launch it, then immediately pause. You can pause indefinitely (as far as I know - I haven't visited in about a week, but I'm assuming it's still possible). I've had mine on pause for about a year. :) Let me know if this works for you!

Hi Mary,
I am new to this group! I have read previous posts and believe this group is going to be very beneficial! I recently started using Google Adwords as I have been struggling with good SEO. I am in need of Revising Titles, tags and descriptions. When looking up phrases on Google Adwords such as Summer Dress, do I want to use this or do I need to add Girls to Summer Dress? Number of searches for Summer Dress is much higher than Girls Summer Dress.

I've been using the keyword planner for the past couple of weeks, as you've shown to be helpful. But today I don't seem to be able to use it unless I actually have a campaign set up. Is this new? I've never had this before today.

Hi Everyone,
Sewhappygolucky- Summer dress may be high in average monthly searches, but that's because it's a general keyword. General keywords are 1-2 words and are great to use in a listing. People usually use general keywords when browsing or just beginning their search and don't know what the quite want. Keywords like girls summer dress is considered to be a long tail keyword because it's more specific than just summer dress. Long tail keywords are going to have less monthly searches because they are more specific. The longer the tail ( 4, 5, 6, or more words) the less average monthly searches. All this being said, Long tail keywords are also needed in a listing title. People use these when they are more likely to buy. It's the long tail keywords that are more likely to get you a sale. A good listing title needs a combination of at least 2 long tail and 2 general keywords.
Gina- Long tail keywords should be between 500-1000 and general keywords are more than 1000.

Maria,
Because of recent changes in Google's Keyword Planner tool, the lower limit has been changed to 300 and there really is no high limit any longer. These numbers are the average monthly searches using each keyword,

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner
I'm wondering if you get a similar effect using Etsyrank.com.
For instance, I'm selling crochet hooks on Etsy. There are 46k+ listings on Etsy for Crochet hooks. If Google ranks crochet hook high and it's high on Etsy I'm still not ranking because of the competition. I'm wondering how you equalize most searched on Etsy and Google with your shops standing. I.e. I'm new, I have less than 200 listings and etc.
Thanks Scott

Scott,
Etsyrank shows keywords that are popular with other sellers. This is one way to get keyword ideas. I would take those keyword ideas to Keyword Planner to see how popular they are with shoppers and to see which other keywords Keyword Planner suggests. On Keyword Planner you can see that shoppers also use the keywords Crochet Needles. You will also see keywords that are more targeted such as, Plastic Crochet Hooks, Metal Crochet Hooks, Bamboo Crochet Hooks, etc. Researching targeted keywords and the competition for those keywords is the best way to make informed choices that help in getting found and seen on Etsy.
Once you have good keywords in place, you have to be very patient. SEO takes a long time to work for Etsy shops with few sales that depend entirely on SEO for getting found and making sales.

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner
I'm slowly getting more sales but my views are and always were low.
In fact i have constantly zero views from google and other search engines outside etsy. All "top keywords" in my "status" relate to etsy search engine.
Started using keyword planner 4 months ago but so far i see no changes in views
Can't understand how is it possible to have zero views outside etsy search engines.
Any help on this matter?
Thanks!

Artur,
Part of the problem is the popularity of the product you are selling. According to Keyword Planner, there are over 40,500 searches per month for Leather Bags and only 1,000 searches per month for Cork Bags. The demand for cork bags, purses, belts and other items is not very high and views and sales from SEO will be lower than for other products.
In addition to SEO, you should work on marketing and promotion to brig attention to your product and boost views and sales if you have not already done this.

Re: Keyword Research Tool for More Views: Google Adwords Keyword Planner
Thank you very much Mary for the easy to follow instructions!!
Did everything and now have access to keyword planner.
But when I look at the monthly results, I do not see the exact number, but this 10K – 100K (for example)
I also get this phrase on top " This page shows ranges for search volumes. For a more detailed view, set up and run a campaign. Dismiss"
How do I get to see the exact numbers?

Antigoni,
Google has made a lot of changes to Keyword Planner in the past 9 months and now only shows search count ranges (100K - 1000K) instead of search count numbers. It takes either running Google ads ($20 per month would work) or going through several more steps to see the exact search count numbers.
Using Keyword Planner has become a lot more complex. I do include step by step instructions on how to use the keyword planner as part of my SEO Masterclass. There are usually a lot of questions when using Keyword Planner and we do answer them all in the class.
