This morning I did a quick draw exercise. Gave myself 1 hour or less. I used acrylic and painted a portrait of a pig......I'm working on loosening up. I tend to get tight quickly.
Well this pig is loose and a bit interesting.
Have a painting floating around in my head that I hope to work on later. Will be gone for a while today. I'll use oil for the new one. I mostly paint alla prima.
So what are you working on????????

Re: What are you working on??????????

SK I very seldom use Linseed Oil
Do you use Turp. or mineral spirits......I was thinking of changing to mineral spirits.

Re: What are you working on??????????

Dononarose, I use odorless turp. But that's only with the oil pastels. Normally I use water-based oil which of course doesn't require turp.

I have to use either Damar varnish or linseed oil to seal the oil pastels when I work in them on canvas. Otherwise they're not fixed.

Re: What are you working on??????????

Thanks SK
Glad to hear you are feeling better Charles

SK I haven't tried water-based oil paint......hard to wrap my head around mixing oil and water...............Do you have as much blending and workable time with the water-based oils as you do with reg. oils. Would love to have the easy clean up......also are the colors as true or as strong as the reg. oils????????

Re: What are you working on??????????

I've tried a couple of the water based oil colors.... I love them especially for when I'm teaching my son!

Tofay, I'm working on my RAW Artist profile. It's RAWards 2012 and since I participated in a showcase in DC this year, I'm automatially nominated for their awards. I don't think I'll win anything though, cause it's put to a public vote and I hardly have a following! Still, it's good experience, right? Has anyone else heard of or participated with RAW?

Also, building some A-frame easels (suggested by Sheri!) for my next showcase.

Glad you're on the mend Charles! Hope everyone has a wonderful and productive day!.

Re: What are you working on??????????

Donnarose, the water-based oil colors are mostly about the same as regular oils. The main difference is that they dry much faster than regular oils. So no, you don't have as much time to work in them as you do with the regular oil paints.

With the faster drying you may find the colors/paint consistency getting a little bit chalky--that's another of the differences from regular oil. But I don't think that is a major problem.

But they don't dry as fast as acrylics--I would say around three days for full drying.

If I had a real studio with lots of room, I'd probably go back to regular oils but with my current space situation, I just don't see myself using them. They are just too messy and smelly.

Re: What are you working on??????????

Glad to hear you're feeling better Charles. Good discussion about water soluble
oils. I did some research and found that it's fine to mix them with traditional oils. However, I really don't like chalky (I've also noticed that with the regular oils (cheaper brands) ) I haven't used the medium that goes with the water soluble so that might be the problem.
Other than that I like them. I only noticed one that the color wasn't as nice as normal oils. That was the cobalt blue from the Holbein brand. It was flat and too light, so I don't use it. I'm still trying to decide if I want to go completely to water soluble or not.
Today I'm finishing up some of the sides of paintings. I'm also going to be promoting my new one

I also made some changes to this one but now think I might need to punch up the clouds a little.

Sometimes I feel like I'm never done with a painting and don't notice it until I've taken the photos and listed it! Do you do that or am I the only one?

Re: What are you working on??????????

Jennifer, the medium for water soluble oil is mostly for glazing and layers. I don't know if it's all that useful if you don't paint that way.

Just my own experience.

Really like the birch tree landscape.

Re: What are you working on??????????

Thanks! Yes it's in acrylics I still have to block it all in and then start with highlighting and deeper shading. Should be pretty nice when it's done!

Re: What are you working on??????????

Sorry I have not been posting lately. It turned out I was still sick, alongside a high fever. Now since the fever has broken I actually have just finished my new piece. Its a hidden mountainscape far in the confines of nature. I just have a few more minor value changes to make to it then it will be posted. Then I will be starting on oil piece along side another watercolor piece. These two new pieces with kick off my season paintings for halloween.

Re: What are you working on??????????

Right now I am getting ready to start a painting from a small family outing called bobbing for apples. Its a little out side of my usual stance of landscapes, and beachscapes . Its for the halloween season. This will be a water color piece. I will post my oil painting up once its finishes drying. I am about to start a series of paintings out of my comfort zone. Hopefully they turn out as well as the oil painting I am waiting to show everyone.

Your halloween piece is spectacular, Charles! Haunting to say the least :)

I have nothing new, just another tree piece and an abstract piece drying now.
