I'm So Bored @ Work.

Anyone else work a day job? What do you do? Do you like it?

I work at a hotel at the front desk. While I went to school for hotel management and love hospitality, I feel like I could and should be doing a lot more with life. Part of it is because I strive to be a full-time business owner, and part of it because I am 2 years out of college with a degree and still working a line-level position.

That sucks. As a full time business owner, I struggle with being bored at work too. My most popular item requires very little creativity and while its a great money maker, it bores me. I am not complaining because it is bankrolling the biz right now and its doing something I wanted to be doing but I am still not making a salary. Come on 2013!

After graduating and finding no work at all, I opened this shop, so this is my full time job. I got bored, hence the change... One day I hope to get a salary out of this.

Jacque - our story is practically identical.

I work as a concierge for a hotel. I find it... lacking and ultimately not rewarding. I got my degree in political science, so this was really nothing I intended to do. But honestly, I just got my degree to get a degree, without any sort of direction in mind.

I'm also two years out of college, painfully bored at work, and knowing my skill set is wasted here.

While it isn't the worst job ever (I've had a paralegal job where they didn't let you get on the internet, listen to music, or even talk - they'd take it out of your bonus check if they thought you were talking), I just find it lackluster. I need a different job, but my degree doesn't give me any openings to the type of jobs I would like (mainly art ones!).

So for now I work here and hope that I can become at least part time in a year or two. We'll see...

I'm currently working in a pub, and I hate it, haha.

I took a gap year after graduating from Uni, and the pub was just a way to earn some money so I could afford to do what I wanted to do during my gap year (go and volunteer with wildlife in South Africa). :P

I actually want to go and do a PhD, but it fell through last year, so I'm having to take a second gap year so I can reapply. It's not all bad - I'm going back to SA in a month - but good lord I'm fed up of my job! I've learned that I'm not at all suited to working with the public.

Can't wait until I can put my degree (Geology) to good use!

Sorry you all are bored. You're too young to be bored! But I get it given our circumstances. You're not alone. I can see it via Google Analytics every day. LOL. You'd be amazed who looks for Gary Larson cartoons during the workday.

Sorry to hear other unhappy stories, but glad I'm not the only one. I do enjoy my co-workers and my industry, I just will never be happy working for anyone and really want my businesses to take off.

I do plan to start my Master's program in Fall 2013 for Urban Planning & Development, with hopes to do urban planning consulting to hospitality firms.

I totally understand how you feel. I'm a registered nurse (and have been for two years). I love patient care; however, there are a lot of politics in the healthcare field (especially in the hospital setting, and I currently work in the hospital setting). Within two years, I haven't received a raise or even promotion to charge nurse (which in itself pays more and provides management experience). I often feel like I "busted my butt" sacrificing to get a bachelor's degree and still ended up in a "dead end" employment situation. I too want to be full-time self employed. That way I will have more autonomy over my life and income. Take care, and best of luck with your shop.
