the automatic translation makes typical AI hallucination mistakes

All my listing texts are in English and are automatically translated by ETSY for many customers. When I (from a German-speaking country) view my own items, I see the translated titles and texts. This affects all sellers who have items in English that sell internationally.

Lately, I have noticed that the translation is apparently supported by AI and typical AI errors arise, some of which can be serious. Sometimes facts are also left out or new ones simply invented.

For example, an “original art print” becomes an “Original Kunstwerk” in the translation, which is like an original artwork.
Or country names that are freely invented are added.
In one item, the description “Used condition” was even simply removed.

It is quite possible that NAD cases will arise in the future because customers feel deceived.

Does this happen with all auto-translation tools?  Every one I've ever tested out makes laughable or even egregious mistakes at times.  I'm not sure how Etsy can get around the fact that all auto-translation tools make mistakes.  Wondering if this is different on other internet marketplaces that provide translation.

Google Translate or Deepl make very few mistakes (I use them in different languages). 

But mistakes are not even the problem. It is the typical AI adding or deleting or changing information that may lead to problems.

Du musst deine Texte ja nicht automatisch übersetzen lassen.

Als deutschsprachiger Shop kannst du den Text in deutsch eingeben und dann deine eigene englische Übersetzung (weiter unten im Listing-Formular). So stellst du zumindest schon mal sicher, dass du deine eigenen Fehler zu lesen sind und nichts, was eine KI sich gerade ausgedacht und hinzu gedichtet hat.

Meine Texte sind in Englisch da ich mehrheitlich in die USA und UK verkaufe. Aber vielen Kunden wird der Text ja in Französisch, Niederländisch oder eben Deutsch angezeigt und da sind die Dichtungen ein Problem

There is an old American saying "_____ is going to be the death of us".   One fills in the blank with the appropriate word. In this case it would become "AI is going to be the death of us". In this instance "More truth than fiction" (Another American saying.

Another seller posted about this recently too. It is a definite problem if Etsy is changing selections to things you do not offer, as was the case with the other shop:

@BeautifulArtPosters ja, aber wenn du den Text in deutsch eingibst (für Ö, NL und DE) und deine eigene englische Übersetzung und evtl zusätzlich eine französische Übersetzung, wird der Text nicht mehr in die Landessprache des Kunden übersetzt mit den KI Fantasien und Auslassungen, sondern nur in deinen ausgewählten Sprachen mit deinen Übersetzungen. 

Du kannst es so machen oder mit den teilweise gefährlichen KI-Fehler leben.

Danke, das ist mit 1500 Postern etwas unrealistisch.

In den letzten Jahren war das auch nie ein problem, die Übersetzungen waren viel Besser. Die AI Halluzinationen sind erst seit ein paar Wochen da.

Die Jahre auf ETSY haben mir gezeigt, dass es sich lohnt, ein Problem immer wieder zu melden. Wenn das eine grössere Zahl von Verkäufern mobilisiert, bewegt sich bei ETSY dann doch irgendwann mal was.

Damit leben muss, das ist klar.

I checked another translator and was give Originaler Kunstdruck  for original art print.

However Etsy uses Microsoft as the translator.  

I tried with Google and Microsoft and come up with some variations.  Whether or not that is tied into AI is soemthing else since the translators predate AI.   Now AI combined with a translator may be an issue.

You can ask Etsy if they would consider using Google translator instead of Microsoft.
