YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBERS IS EXPOSED ON ETSY!! MINE WAS - IS YOURS?

I sent a friend a listing from a shop on Etsy so she could look at it. I was shocked when I saw under the listing a "BUY IT NOW - and the last 4 digits of my credit card number"!!  I honestly didn't believe this happened - so as a test - I went into her shop and sent her one of her listings - SURPRISED - it had a "BUY IT NOW - and the last 4 digits of my credit card number"!! 

This is soooooooooooo illegal - I went in and removed my credit card number and per Etsy - I will not get paid.  We need to provide our banking information and a card number.  I think I'm "SCREWED".

ETSY YOU HAVE TO FIX THIS NOW!!

Your card numbers are not public.  Only you see them, it is a standard practice on sites you shop at regularly and have default cards saved.  They show you and ONLY you, the last four digits of the default card when you shop, so that you know in advance how you will be paying and have an opportunity to use the standard checkout instead of the Buy Now quick checkout if you prefer to use a different card for the current purchase.

It still bothers me - I buy on Etsy all the time - I know how to buy on Etsy - I don't need Etsy prompting me to BUY IT NOW.

@ArtistInJewelry  I logged into Etsy using my husband's account and went to my shop to view about 5 listings,  my card info is nowhere to be found... even when he added an item of mine to his cart.

Of course when I, logged under MY own sign-in & started to shop for something to buy. I do see the last 4 #'s of MY card that's on file.

There's nothing illegal about that since only the account owner (that's me) can see that information. Should your friend - logged under HER OWN acct see the last 4 digits of YOUR cc # then you can "possibly" say that your  acct. has been compromised & can seek legal action/counsel. There's nothing Etsy can do as it's really not an issue.

No platform exposes the personal information of both buyers and sellers. They always keep it a secret.

@ArtistInJewelry  Sorry you're upset, I understand. Rest assured your number isn't compromised because of Buy it Now. It's just because you're logged in. I advise you add your CC back in so that Etsy can pay you. Then try viewing your shop (or any shop) from a logged out browser and you will see that Buy it Now button not there.

You can only see YOUR number, because you are logged in,

anyone can see their OWN number when they are logged in.

If you don't want to see it, log out

IMO it's the "creepy factor".
When I browse on eBay, Amazon & other sites that have my credit card on file, if I hover over a "buy it now" or similar link, the last four digits of my credit card are not displayed.
I never see that info until I go to check out & then I need to confirm that's the credit card I want to use.

I look at this as another move by Etsy to try & encourage sales. Sort of way to say "check out will be easy, we already have all your info". 
It's not a security risk, though it may be a financial one if you let anyone & everyone in your family use your device to shop here & you never sign out.

Multiple people have the same last 4 digits of their credit cards or there would only be 10,000 credit card numbers world wide. 

If they have all the numbers, then yes people can steal it. Even then they normally need the expiration and CVC (Whatever the 3 digits on the back are called).

Gentle suggestions for anyone who is really concerned about their credit card being compromised...

Get a second card.  Use one card ONLY online, and the other ONLY for in-person purchases.  Not only will you have a back up in hand should one card be compromised, you'll have a clue as to where the compromise occurred.

Save your receipts, and keep track of your purchases!  Nothing on your monthly bill should ever be a surprise.

Then set up online monitoring for both cards.  It's pretty easy to do.  Check balances/new charges REGULARLY - at least every couple of days.  You'll know right away if a card is compromised.  The faster you can report an illegitimate charge, the better - for both your card issuer and yourself.  There's a very good chance you won't even be billed for promptly reported erroneous charges.
