What does blocking someone actually do?

I have blocked a user account (my ex) because he keeps harassing me. Blocking the account does not stop him form messaging me, it does not automatically send his messages to spam and apparently does not stop him from trying to purchase from my shop. So What does it actually do?

It just stops him from following you. You need to mark his messages as spam.

I do. It would be nice if the block function just does that for me though

When you click to block someone, the pop up says:

"Once they are blocked, they will no longer be able to follow you."

That's literally it.

Except that is not fact. I blocked someone and they still follow me.

um ... no, not is not so in any way. Unless a person is somehow changing id's or such. i have blocked someone and they continue to follow me.

Report to Etsy as abuse.

I do and they terminate this account. I have done this 7 times already. Its just such a hassle to go through all of that, it would be easier for me to just block and move on.

It's a throwback to the time we had a front-page feed showing items and shops that were faved by people we followed.  I rather liked it - the idea that if you liked the same stuff someone else liked, you may find new things to look at and buy.  But it was only on the user's account - not any shop.  So blocking someone just serves no point any more - besides, we can make our faves private if we don't want anyone peeping.

Nothing you can mark messages as spam and all new messages go to spam but they can still buy

Get a restraining order. That’s probably the only real way to do it in your case.

Yes, this sounds more like a personal problem that should be addressed before involving Etsy.

I don't know why they don't just get rid of the "block" option as it literally does nothing. "One of those things that is no longer applicable and Etsy just abandons it. OR they could turn it in to a REAL block option that actually blocks someone!

Trying to stay calm here ... Etsy support tell me, and acknowledge 'blocking' is actually doing nothing ... a person can follow and favourite your stuff ... they are looking into it ... and hear my feedback ... which is why? Blocking appears i actual fact according to etsy support to be pointless.

Blocking someone from following you was just that. At one point, we could follow accounts and see their recently favouritedfavourites,and the treasuries they made. Treasurieshave been an obsolete function for many years, and the ability to follow someone also has in recent years. So, yes, the block function is pointless as non of the things it was brought in for exist any more.

Sorry ... I don't follow ... I have blocked someone, they have a couple of hundred of my stock up and and they follow my shop ... how is this obsolete? I ask politely

As an update for those who are interested ... Etsy deleted the account of the 'follower' I complained about.
