Will there ever be an update on the variations? I cannot be the only one that needs more than the 2 they limit our selling accounts too. How can I offer customs when all I can do is put two color variations. I need at least 4 variations. I cannot list my product correct and I'm not going to make separate listing for each set I offer. I really hope etsy will do something about this.

It is very unlikely that Etsy is going to make that change to increase the variations any time soon. 

Most people find workarounds for it, like combining 2 options into each one. 

Though I'm not sure why you would need 4 different variations for color? Can you give a more specific example? We could try to give you suggestions about how to list within Etsy's options.

I doubt there is a plan to add more variations but you never know.

Sellers have been asking for more than 2 variations since before I started in 2016.

Etsy aren't interested.

We only get 2 variations such as colour and size say but you can put in as many colours or sizes as you like.  You need to click "I offer more than one" at the colour section of the listing page and then in the Variations screen select colour and all the colours of the rainbow are there to be selected and you can add your own colours too using the custom option.

Don't need to. Can do, but don't need to. Just head to variations and set it up.

Too many choices can confuse buyers. If you can't operate with only two variations, set the listing for particular combinations based on what is usually ordered. Then put wordage in your description advising buyers if they want more options, to contact you for a custom order.
