URGENT: Is Etsy working on changes to accurately record Country of Origin on Etsy Labels?

For anyone outside the US using Etsy labels, note with new tariffs against China each item in a shipment must have Country of Origin recorded as well as HS code. Currently Etsy labels default Country of Origin to our home country for all items and we have no way to update this. 

This subjects Etsy sellers to fines, penalties and shipping delays. 

Kindly let us know if Etsy is working on this and how quickly we can expect a solution? Thank you!

Really? When I was writing my Customs forms by hand, the white sticker ones; it asks for origin of goods. So I wrote the particular country in the same area where I described the goods. Did that for over 10 years.

Both of my USA bound packages shipped earlier this week are now in the USA, one has cleared the Chicago facility and on its way to final destination, the other still hanging about in Chicago and/or customs.

It's weird that Canada Post isn't making any announcements about holdups. 

Wonder if there's something with the Richmond distribution site in particular and packages going through BC getting extra scrutiny. Wouldn't surprise me, given our issues, and even more so, the fact Richmond is home to Shein and Temu distribution sites I think.

@TickleYourWitch   @cindylouwho2   If my memory serves me correctly, Vancouver got hit with snow storms Monday and Tuesday (Feb 3 & 4) so that may account for slow movement in Richmond.

@TreeTreasuresCanada the other 3 I shipped at the same time are already through US Customs and moving through the USPS system. They went to Richmond at the same time as the 2 that stalled.

@cindylouwho2  Just looked and a parcel that I sent on Feb 4, was processed through Richmond on the 5th.  Thought weather might play a part in delays but it just seems to be hit and miss with parcels.

I don't know if this is helpful or not, but I have Informed Delivery for USPS, and when I'm due to receive a package, it lists "Etsy" as the shipper if calculated shipping is used.

So if there are penalties and fines, they are going to go to Etsy first. I imagine you can dispute with Etsy if they didn't provide a way to input the necessary information. There are going to be a lot of angry Sellers if they are fined when they were trying to do the right thing.

Chitchats update for my parcels dropped off Feb 5 with correct labelling from the start: departed Rochester NY on way to destination. Yay.

parcels dropped off Feb 3, still on their way to USPS. I had to rectalactively update the HS codes to 10 digit. fingers crossed!

I wonder what the Ides of March will bring!

One of my packages  with an Etsy label had a variety of items so I included a list of all items with Country of Origin, HS codes and value. No idea what customs will make of it if opened but it's there if they do.

Hey!

I just went to buy a Chit Chats label and along with US Edge there is a new option to buy a Canada Post tracked label from them with any duties charged to recipient. I guess this is how Etsy is handling the country of origin issue....they want us to buy on Chit Chats, where they have already done the necessary coding. 

Interesting and super helpful....it's with Etsy's awesome US tracked package rates, too.

It will be interesting to see how buyers react.

I get the impression it's just a payment vehicle to buy a Canada Post label and you will still be able to drop off at Canada Post?

But maybe not. Isn't there another shipper they are integrated with too? Ship Station? Shippo? Maybe they have the same capability now.

In any event, I am not sending anything that might have duties charged to the customer until we get a sense of how buyers are reacting. I bet a lot just won't want to be bothered with any potential headaches.

Forgot to say Chit Chats also has a declaration of handmade goods they're asking you to affix to outside of packages.

@TickleYourWitch so we have to sign up for ChitChats and give them all of our personal info to do this? They've never bothered to reply to any of my questions about their services, so I am very disinclined to do so. 

Shipstation has a monthly charge. Etsy only partnered with Shippo in the US, not Canada.

Hopefully its temporary until Etsy can capture this info on Etsy labels. What a mess one man has created. A little transition time would have been nice.

@TickleYourWitch I'm confused. Aren't duties charged to the receiver automatically? On NetParcel, you can check off who is to pay fees but it's set to receiver by default. So what do you mean by a new option? I'm assuming you could always buy a CP tracked label with CC. 

I'm very surprised no one ever had to fill in country of origin before. I've been doing that since the early 2000s regardless of shipper!

@FallsAveVintage Filling in a country of origin has always been required. However the way Etsy set up their Canada Post shipping labels, they did not offer a place to input this info. Instead when a label is printed, it shows Canada as the country origin for the goods. It is a hidden default setting.

Any other shipper, including regular Canada Post labels, lets you input the origin country.

@VogueVixens I was referring to Chit Chats. Someone mentioned CC recently added the country of origin box but I'm not understanding why it wasn't there in the first place since origin country has always been required for US imports.

In reference to my surprise - I've complained more than a few times to Etsy about the origin country box (and HS format screw up) and have mentioned it in the forums but  no one cared.

I had no idea it was because most sellers weren't aware this was necessary for Customs but now I see why - CC and other services simply default to Canada like Etsy does. On CP site, eBay, and my service, it's always been a required field.
