For anyone outside the US using Etsy labels, note with new tariffs against China each item in a shipment must have Country of Origin recorded as well as HS code. Currently Etsy labels default Country of Origin to our home country for all items and we have no way to update this.
This subjects Etsy sellers to fines, penalties and shipping delays.
Kindly let us know if Etsy is working on this and how quickly we can expect a solution? Thank you!
Have you seen this thread?
They say that they are "sharing relevant updates" there.
Not even Canada Post has updated yet.
I doubt Etsy will work that fast.
@PlatypusDream Canada Post labels already do this though.
Any Canadian shipping to almost any country other than the US needed this functionality years ago. I am really shocked so few seem to know that.
i took my parcels to the post office yesterday and asked specifically about this and they said that Canada Post has just removed the country of origin box.
Just baffling!
I write it on the CN22 label I attach to envelopes. Thank goodness sewing patterns are printed in the USA!
@PlatypusDream "they said that Canada Post has just removed the country of origin box" - I am not seeing that. I have it on the Canada Post website and through Shippo.
I guess the manager of the Post Office outlet at Shopper's isn't that well versed.
I hope it doesn't come back to bite me in the future.
Actually, when you prepare the mandatory customs form for Canada it will you to fill the field for country of origin. I believe the form is C22
They should suspend the ability to buy Etsy labels until it is sorted out then. Every package that crosses with an inaccurate Country of Origin code or codes is subject to headaches and delays. I have a couple stuck in limbo that all have Canada as Country of Origin as per label default. One has two vintage items with a different country of origin (thankfully not China) so the label is inaccurate. These packages have not been updated for a couple days since they arrived at the distribution center and so I'm wondering what will become of them. Will they move or be returned, who knows. So much anxiety!
Third party shippers like Chit Chats have already implemented the ability to record country of origin and hs codes.
I had to go back again and edit the In Transit parcel labels to make sure the hs codes were all 10 digit as the 6 digit codes were unacceptable in my labels for today.
HS code is only needed if the country of origin is China.
nope. Not true.
HS code required for my Made In USA vintage items I shipped to USA today or I could not purchase the labels.
@MarioTreasureChest HS code is required by many countries.
But the important part here is the country of origin (also required by many countries)
I have always avoided using etsy labels, and now the case is being made for me. This is the second thread I've read tonight complaining about this mistake. It seems like I made a good decision.
@JustMeToo It wouldn't affect your stuff, so using Etsy Labels and giving your customers much cheaper shipping would still be the better decision here.
This problem has zero effect on 99% of what I ship to the US, but some other sellers should have been complaining about this years ago.
When Etsy first gave us the option to use their CP label interface, I brought this up with support more times than I can count. I finally gave up when it became apparent I was talking to a brick wall…
At the time, it was not really an issue for my US orders. I used CP website for overseas orders, so it wasn’t a huge problem. Now it is.
They need to finally start paying attention, and get this fixed asap!
Canadian eBay sellers have been complaining for years already, about the inaccuracy of County of origin on eBay's Canada Post Labels.
Hard to know how Etsy prioritizes changes, my partner (programmer) believes this shouldn't be a hard thing to fix.
The fact that they can't get around to separating NI from the UK or fix their system for Canadian GST for GST registered sellers, while other major platforms have managed it.
or adding Ground Advantage instead of First Class to USPS shipping. There is no excuse for that.
@TickleYourWitch: "Currently Etsy labels default Country of Origin to our home country ..." Like so many other things, this is probably a relic of a pre-supply and pre-vintage Etsy. Obviously if it was made by the seller, the country of origin would be where the seller is located.
@MarioTreasureChest: Items coming into the United States have required a country of origin declaration since 1930 - almost all other countries have had that requirement for at least decades.
@BagmakerSupply "this is probably a relic of a pre-supply and pre-vintage Etsy" - there is no such thing. Those categories were allowed since Etsy started, which was many, many years before they had shipping labels.
It's just laziness.
@cindylouwho2
I have been selling supplies here since 2007 - as you say, many, many, many years before shipping labels were made available!
I don't think it will be happening any time soon. Heck, they still haven't acknowledged the USPS no longer has First Class shipping. That changed years ago.
@TickleYourWitch - I think the delay in your shipments is likely regional. Everything I shipped on Monday with Canada Post etsy labels has cleared customs in Chicago and is on its way with the USPS. There was some vintage, handmade and fabric supplies. Don't worry. Usually Chicago is the black hole where packages disappear for days.
