You are just talking to fellow sellers here. All first messages, no matter who they are from need to be responded to, even if they don't require a response! The system is automated so it doesn't know who it is from or what it is about, it just sees an unanswered one and you get dinged. Sorry!

You determining no response was needed is irrelevant to the program. The program doesn't read what the conversation is about and decide if there should be a response, its answer is always 'yes'. You could have responded with confirmation that you received her choice. Or just responded with a simple thank you. Head's up for the future. Don't know enough about your first example to give any advice.
