Star Seller Shipping Problem

Jump to solution

Most of my sales are local and I use the Etsy site to organize the orders. The problem is that every local sale I make doesn't come with a tracking number because I try to meet up with as many purchasers as I can. This has obviously hurt my ability to be a star seller, as even meeting the other criteria is useless if I can't have tracking numbers with every order.

I have tried to use 'other' as a shipper and put 'delivered by hand' as a tracking number, but that doesn't work. There must be a solution here because being a 'star seller' should mean we are efficient and really good at what we do, delivering high quality on time, with good communication, and on time. How can this be addressed? I am sure I'm not the only one with this issue and the help centre just said to submit the question here.

Thanks!

There must be a solution here

"What if I offer local pick-up or delivery for my items?

At this time, orders that don't have tracking because they are delivered or picked up in person will be considered dispatched without tracking, and will not meet the Star Seller criteria for dispatch. "

Well, yes, being a star seller should mean that, but there are just a few but immovable criteria for the badge that do not necessarily actually reflect anything other than the seller has jumped through the required hoops.  The hoops are the hoops.  A tracking number is one of the hoops.

Buy a first class letter stamp rate label for like 58 cents and mail them a receipt, thank you, biz card..whatever.  The rule is tracking  OR an Etsy label. They want the money. If you hand deliver and charge no shipping they are not getting a cut. So they won't include that in the SS criteria.

@hopeandjoystudios The receipt option only works in the US. Canadians can’t buy lettermail postage on Etsy.

This is a big annoyance for me too. I also do a lot of local sales. So far I’ve squeaked through on SS as I’m high enough volume.

I have the same problem. I opened my first Etsy shop, iMergination nine years ago, and my other, Crozroadz, eight years ago. My first sales on Etsy were to friends, neighbors and fellow teachers—all due to my ‘grass roots/word of mouth’ advertising. I would hand deliver their purchase(s), pick up my check/cash (if they had chosen ‘other’ for payment) and mark the sale ‘completed’. Sadly, these buyers no longer have the ‘cash’ purchase option and I MUST provide a ship-tracking number to be considered a Star Seller.

I have retained those customers (acquired more like them due to participation in the local Artisans’ Showcase) and continue my ‘local’ service with a BIG adjustment.  Now, these customers PM me what they want to buy—I ‘deactivate’ the item(s) and within 24 hours the sale has been wrapped, delivered and paid for. The SAD part for my customers—now, they can only pay cash/check, The SAD part for Etsy—no commission; the SAD part for me-- I don’t get the reviews and have to keep a separate financial accounting ledger for my ‘other’ sales. Just five days ago, I had to use this adjusted process on seven items totaling $469—all for the same woman who was my VERY first customer nine years ago and a regular ever since.

In the Financial Settings section of our stores, Etsy notes that the more methods of payment available to buyers, the more sales there are for sellers. Yet, they have eliminated an option so important for those of us with local customers. AND, they have not bothered to add a ‘hand delivered’ option for those of us who have a ‘local’ sales base/participate in local art shows.

I know Etsy, or any company, needs to have criteria to maintain quality of products offered and service rendered (those 'hoops'), but they need to expand to include ALL the ways we sellers can get buyers--global, national AND local-- and keep them happily coming back to our shops.
