Shop blocked due to language issue – Need urgent support

Hi everyone,

I’m Omar, owner of the shop SiculaMaiolica.

 

I opened a support ticket because my shop has been flagged for "untranslated content", even though I manually translated every single listing, tag, shop section, and description into English. Unfortunately, the default language is still set to Italian, and I’m unable to change it myself.

 

As a result, my shop has been blocked for days, despite all content being in English. This is seriously affecting my visibility and sales.

 

I already contacted Etsy support, and they told me they would update the default language.

However, I haven’t received a clear timeline and I’ve been waiting for a long time with no resolution.

 

Can someone from Etsy staff please help escalate this issue or check the ticket status? I just want to fix this technical problem and get back to selling.

Your shop is open and products can be purchased - so you are not being stopped from selling. It's just that the auto translation won't work because the listing language does not match your shop language setting.

Your shop sections and listings need to be written in your shop's default language. That allows the automatic translation to work.

 

You can add manual translations for other languages (eg. English) by assigning additional languages in your shop settings:

Write everything in your shop in your own language because Etsy will translate it into every buyer's own language so you don't need to do it yourself.

I just want to clarify my situation once more.

 

All content in my shop has been fully translated into English — titles, tags, descriptions, sections, and policies. However, the default language is still set to Italian, and I do not have the ability to change it myself.

 

This issue is not about untranslated content, but about a technical block that prevents the system from recognizing English as the main language. Some default texts (like “1-3 giorni” or “Fisso”) still appear in Italian because of this setting, even though everything else is in English.

 

I’ve already followed all the translation steps and contacted your support team, who confirmed this must be done on the backend by Etsy.

 

I’ve been waiting for many hours with no resolution, and this delay is seriously affecting my visibility and ability to sell.

 

I kindly ask that my request be escalated to the technical team or a supervisor so that the default language of my shop can be changed to English as soon as possible.

The system is working correctly, the shop language is defined in the shop settings, and locked when you start your shop. Using English when the shop's default language is something else is user error.

Automated translation requires the input language to be defined, for your shop it is Italian. The software expects Italian, it will not find your English words in its Italian dictionary.

You need to follow the instructions correctly:

  • first complete everything in your shop's default language,
  • add English as an additional language in your shop settings,
  • and then add the manual translations in English.

Etsy Support responses are slow for many seller issues, think days and weeks, not hours. And they don't work weekends (or US holidays) unless it is a major site issue.

There is no support team here, the forum is sellers, just like you. If you are lucky a forum admin will escalate for you, but it is not guaranteed.

 

When you get a reply from support and it does not solve your problem then:

  • reply to the support message, as not resolved
  • do not start a new support request, that will close your existing support request and take you back to the start of the support process

Did you follow the guidelines for manual translation?

It is often better to put things in the default language and let the system translate.  It actually works well.

If it is being done then have patience, wait.

They won't be doing anything over this weekend.

Hopefully you will be in the queue to be dealt with early in the week.

This coming week is a short week, Friday is 4th July, so Etsy will be shut for a long weekend.

@SiculaMaiolica   Chances are support needs to send this to a specialist.  They themselves cannot change things on Etsy.

Did they tell you they were sending it to a specialist?  If so that will take time and with a holiday weekend in the US coming up, things may lag a bit.

Are you sure it has not already been done?

your shop is active,

everything is displaying in English to me,

and there are no translation messages like this:

"Translated by Google
See in original language"

which would appear if it was translated from a shop with a non-English language setting

Although my listings and shop sections are written in English, the default language is still set to Italian — which causes Etsy's system to block visibility and indexing properly. Yes, I understand that from the outside everything seems fine and the shop looks active and in English.

 

However, the problem is on the backend: the default shop language is still set to Italian, and Etsy's system is flagging my listings as "untranslated" even though I wrote everything in English manually.

 

This is affecting my visibility and SEO, especially in search results outside Italy.

 

I already contacted Etsy Support and they said the language would be changed, but days have passed and it’s still not done.

 

Unfortunately, I can’t upload a screenshot here, but I assure you the issue is real and still ongoing.

@FancyTogs   I tried to place in cart.  The language change stops the ability to place the item in a cart.  It grays out the order.

The Sunflower cushion I checked only ships to EU countries, not the UK.

With a UK delivery destination I was able to add to cart, but the cart had a warning message "This item does not deliver to United Kingdom." and checkout was greyed out. This is correct.

By changing the delivery destination to one of the EU countries I was able to add to cart and get all the way into checkout. This is correct.

 

The grey blue ruffle cushion ships to UK as well, with a UK delivery destination I was able to add to cart and enter checkout. This is correct.

 Why are you translating your listings? Write out your listings in your home language. That is what that he expects you to do. I have purchased things from overseas shops and the Etsy‘s auto translations have been fabulous. You’re just confusing Etsy‘s algorithm and bots by having your shop in two languages.

Etsy likes it when you do things it wants you to do. Conversely, Etsy does not like it when you do things it does not want you to do. One thing it wants you to do is write your listings in your native language. One thing it does NOT like you to do is translate your listings and writing those translations into your listings .  Etsy tends to reward shops that do the things it wanted to do. Conversely, it discourages shops who don’t do the things it wants to do. By writing in English when your shop is in another country, you are doing something it does not want you to do. My advice is to write your descriptions as you would in your countries language and let Etsy do the translation for English speaking customers. Etsy does a really good job of this. I have never seen a listing translated to English by Et that doesn’t make sense or is confusing.

my advice to you is to go back and change all your listings into your native language (I believe you said it was Italian).

But I’m not trying to “manually translate” my listings — I want to set English as the default language of my shop.

 

My goal is to sell internationally, and writing in English as the main language is a strategic decision.

Etsy’s system currently still treats Italian as the default, which breaks SEO, automatic indexing, and causes my listings to be flagged as “untranslated”.

 

Support already confirmed that only Etsy can change the default language. I just need them to complete this backend fix.

I totally understand your point, but my situation is a bit different.

 

When I opened my shop, Etsy set Italian as the default language. Now I want to switch it to English permanently, because I want to target international customers and write my listings directly in English — not use auto-translations.

 

So I’ve already written everything in English (titles, tags, sections, descriptions), and I’ve contacted Etsy Support to request the official language change on the backend.

 

They confirmed it can only be done manually by Etsy staff, but I’ve been waiting several days and it’s still not fixed. That’s why I’m asking for help here.

@SiculaMaiolica   The translator works well.  It's really not a good idea to set everything to English.  Frankly English has a lot of idioms and ways of expression that are difficult even for excellent speakers to use so you find yourself describing something that to native English speakers is strange or even inappropriate.

@SiculaMaiolica   Etsy's Chat is outsourced and they do not have complete knowledge of how Etsy works.  It is quite possible the person replied does not fully understand Etsy.  (And btw chats and emails with Etsy are not to be shared in the forums.)

Are you sure he did not send your request onward to a specialist?

Sì, credo che il problema sia legato alla richiesta che ho inviato a Etsy per cambiare la lingua predefinita del mio shop da italiano a inglese.

Al momento tutto appare in inglese, ma per il sistema Etsy il negozio risulta ancora impostato in italiano, e forse questo crea dei conflitti.

 

Tu puoi confermare che non ti permette di aggiungere l’articolo al carrello?

Mi confermi quindi che il negozio non è funzionante per chi vorrebbe acquistare?

 

Sto cercando di capire quanto grave sia il problema, anche per insistere con il supporto.

Yes, I used the Etsy chat and the agent told me the request to change the default shop language was submitted and would be completed soon, but I haven’t received any confirmation or update since then.

 

This issue is currently affecting my shop’s visibility and I really appreciate any support from the moderators to help resolve it.
