Scam on messaging

Hello,

I received a message in my in box from Etsy it has the same name.
Asking for me to reply my email to complete a verification otherwise I can’t accept new orders. I did reply as it looked real.

Could you let me know if a scam or if it was really Etsy contacting me

Thank you

Re: Scam on messaging

Yes it is most likely a scam. All REAL messages from etsy will be in the "from etsy" section of your inbox.

Mark the message as spam if it wasn't.

If all you provided is your email, you'll probably now get an email asking for banking information. DO NOT DO IT.

Re: Scam on messaging

If it looks like a scam and feels like a scam it’s most likely a scam.

If Etsy send you a message it will be in the “from Etsy” section in messages in your dashboard.

Be careful Etsy has become a place for scammers to target sellers daily mainly it’s bc Etsy don’t have a strong enough protocol put in place to flag their messages.

This is based on my own opinion and observations:

How to spot someone who may be a scammer:

(this is not always the scenario, use your judgment, if you think it’s likely it’s a scammer, trust your gut - it’s highly likely it is!)

  • no profile pic (use your own judgement some people just don’t want to have a profile picture)
  • their profile name may make you suspicious
  • no favorites / profile info like their location (again use your judgment)
  • If they message you asking for your email or other personal information
  • If they message you just one word to see if your account is active/if you’ll reply
  • If they message you asking trying to befriend you to inquire your marketing plan
  • If they message you pretending to be interested in you shop or your shops products
  • If they message you pretending to be a shop owner trying to befriend you to inquire your marketing plan
  • Common spelling mistakes like “shore” or “sa le” is done on purpose sometimes to avoid bot detection!

It would be in Etsy best interest to focus more on ways to prevent and penalize the scammers who create fake Etsy accounts literally just set up to target Etsy sellers!

Re: Scam on messaging

IT'S A SCAM!!

If Etsy was sending you a message it would appear in the 'from Etsy' section of your message inbox.

Etsy does not need your email address (they already have it). Buyers do not need your email address in order to purchase.

If you did send your email address the scammers will now email you directly in a few days and ask for your credit card details whereby they will steal money from you. Do not give them your card details.

Scam messages (and spam) should be marked as SPAM (using a browser).

  • It's a scam!! I received the same message today. Thankfully, I questioned it on the forum first and didn't take the bait. I hope things turn out ok for you

Re: Scam on messaging

This is a complete scam, expect to receive phishing emails to that email address you gave them or possible hack attempts on your Etsy account, I hope you have 2FA enabled.

In future remember that Etsy do not need to ask for your email address to verify anything, as they already have it on file.
