I was given a 50% response rate, however, the message was from a person I contacted to possibly buy from, not from someone trying to buy from my shop.
Appreciate it if you can adjust this.

There's nothing to adjust. If you want the star, you have to answer ALL initial messages or send them to spam.

Etsy won't adjust it for you, unfortunately. I had this happen once, and it should never happen again. Now look for the blue banner on desktop, or the blue dot on mobile, for any message that requires a response - or marked as spam.
