Etsy's system used go let us write a private note on any order no matter how old, whether it was completed/shipped or cancelled.
NOW something has changed and I cannot write a note on any cancelled orders. The option to write a private note still shows, but the system does not let me save the text that I have typed in. It's important for us to have a record of why an order was cancelled, connected to the actual order.
PLEASE FIX THIS
Just confirming your observation - we always put the private note on the order before we cancel it so cannot confirm when this started.
I'm not sure either. But the most recent cancellation was by Etsy security about 1 hour after the sale, saying the sale might not be authorized by the card holder.
Since we didnt do the cancellation, there was no time for us to write a note.
The last note I wrote on a cancelled order was for a sale from Aug 4th, cancelled a few days later. I wrote the note AFTER the cancellation.
I have noticed a similar problem - but with adding a note from a message rather than on the order page.
I had an address amendment message, so I 'added' it as a private note on the message page. But then when I clicked back onto the order page the message was not there. So I added it again, on the order page and it immediately showed up.
I then remembered that I'd had another address change message last week - and didn't remember seeing and private notes when I printed my orders. Sure enough, after half an hour of checking each message in all 3 shops I finally found it - the message hadn't saved, but it did when I saved it again on the order page. Have apologised to the buyer and have had to re-send the order
(Yes, I know I'm not protected for address changes, but this has never been an issue for me and I'm not worried about that)
I've seen that before too but never really trusted the "only you can see it" option so haven't used it for anything that I wouldn't want to chance the buyer to receive. LOL

this is still a problem. You cannot add a private note to an order that has been canceled. I always add a note before canceling but sometimes some additional details pop up later with communication or tracking later on and i would like to be able to add those as a note for future reference if its needed, but nope.
@AlmostFamiliar: Are you experiencing this using the Etsy app (on which operating system) or via mobile browser or desktop browser (which browser and operating system)? We can still add private notes to cancelled orders using a desktop browser (in this test Firefox on Linux Mint).
