Old tricks ? New tricks ? Scam?

These kind of messages are quite often recently.

Most starting like someone purchased an item and need my email for processing the payment.

Today I received a long email like this :

Hello, welcome to the Etsy support team,

A buyer named Lisa Weber has just paid for his order. However, we cannot confirm the order yet.

This is because we have doubts about your status as a genuine seller.

As you know, online scams have become commonplace. We therefore ask you to confirm your order now.

PLEASE SEND US A MESSAGE SO WE CAN SEND YOU A LINK TO RECEIVE YOUR PAYMENT.

Once confirmed, we will verify all information and you will receive an email that your item has been sold.

YOU MUST CONFIRM YOUR ORDER BY FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE MESSAGE.

IF WE CANNOT CONFIRM THAT YOU ARE A GENUINE SELLER, YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE DELETED.

We thank you for your cooperation and apologize for any inconvenience.

Best regards
Etsy

and I also replied :

You do not need to try this on me . I receive similar messages every day. : (

@Former_Member "A buyer named Lisa Weber has just paid for his order." I would also tell them Lisa is a girl:)

Re: Old tricks ? New tricks ? Scam?

Do not reply to these people at all and mark the messages as spam, so not responding won't count against star seller metrics for message response.

Also, etsy recently started placing messages from etsy in a separate section in your etsy inbox identifying them as such, so people know that messages claiming to be from etsy not appearing there are not legitimate.

Re: Old tricks ? New tricks ? Scam?

Just a new variation of the same old trick. They have to change it up once in a while so that they can stay ahead of the auto detection for using the same verbiage over and over again.

Re: Old tricks ? New tricks ? Scam?

I wonder if any of the scammers read the forums to get ideas for another scam. Are they thinking, I haven’t tried wording it that way, let’s see what happens. Or darn, they seem to have figured out that one, let’s try something different. From all the threads it’s easy to see that many sellers are still responding and loosing money, but more and more sellers now know it’s a scam so they delete the message or send it to spam.

Re: Old tricks ? New tricks ? Scam?

@Former_Member  When you receive a TRUE Order, it will appear on your "Orders & Shipping" Page (in your Shop Dashboard).  If it isn't there, you have no Order.  The only thing you want to make sure you do however, is Mart the bogus scam Message as Spam, just so you don't get dinged for Star Seller. And I'm really sorry you were hit by scammers.  BTW, your Response was much nicer than mine would have been:)
