Hi there, I am getting notification of messages but they are not in my inbox. These are potential clients asking questions and I cannot see or answer them. Only getting the notification they sent a message.
Probably scam messages that Etsy caught and deleted or put in your spam folder.

If you are referring to the eMail copy of the Etsy Message, the text is still included in the eMail (just hidden) and can be read by looking at the raw content of the eMail (exactly what it is called and how to do it varies depending on your eMail client).
But be sure to check the SPAM folder on your Etsy Messages page using a browser, although it is very possible that Etsy identified the Message as a scam attempt and deleted both it and the sender's account.
