This morning, I got an email from Etsy saying that someone had messaged me. I didn't see any sign of a new message in my current shop, but then noticed that the message was sent from my previous Etsy shop. That shop is closed, and has been closed for several years. I can't see any way that someone could have messaged me through my closed shop. Is this some kind of technical glitch? Or a scam? There is a "view message" link in the email but I'm reluctant to click on it in case it is a scam. Has anyone else experienced this?
It might be a glitch or it could be someone has taken over your closed shop. By "closed" do you mean you just don't use it, or is it totally closed and can't be accessed or used?
Etsy closed older shops to stop this from happening but if it's just not being used it's possible someone has taken it over. If it's been taken over they have probably locked you out by changing the password.
If you can get into it, looking at the message won't cause you harm. Just don't act on anything scammy like leaving etsy, giving them financial info, etc.
You should contact etsy support to let them know what's happening and review any of your financial accounts that were linked to that shop.
I completely closed my previous shop (moonbindery). When I go to the url, there's a message from Etsy saying "moonbindery is currently not selling on Etsy." Very puzzling. Thanks for the advice! I'll contact Etsy support about it.
@MoonAndHare if the message says that, the shop is closed but the account is still 'open' and able to be used ... and be messaged. If you aren't using that account as a buyer-only account, I would suggest closing it completely.
I contacted Etsy, and they checked on it and said that because my previous shop is permanently closed, no one could send a new message. Apparently it was just a glitch and I was sent a notification for an old message. At any rate, my account hasn't been compromised and it won't affect my current shop, fortunately. Thanks for the help!
