My message response time is being negatively affected by not replying to spam messages so now I can't get start seller status. Is this able to be fixed?
@MockAndLock: Probably almost everyone on this forum can sympathize with you but there are innumerable threads about your exact issue. As it says right on your Star Seller page, you need to reply to the FIRST message of EVERY NEW INCOMING THREAD. It does not matter who sent it, the subject matter, if it is a duplicate or blank or anything else. If it is SPAM then it should be marked as such.
If the unanswered thread is not a Help Request, at least for the time being, it appears that marking an unanswered message as SPAM (even after the 24 hour deadline has passed) will cause your reply percentage to change in a day or two if the original message was within the current star seller period (but not retroactively). Note that subsequent messages from that account may go directly to the SPAM folder.
Hello there!
Just a quick reminder about our community policy regarding posting in old threads. We noticed you recently posted in an inactive thread. We prefer not to revive threads without recent replies. This is to keep the forums organized and focused on current discussions, making it more engaging for all.
If a thread hasn't received replies in months or even years, please hold off on posting in it. Start a new discussion for your specific question or topic instead. Thanks for understanding and keeping our community awesome.

Messages marked as spam don't count in your response rate. You have to MARK them as spam, not just ignore them.
@AngleAh: Unless Etsy has recently "fixed" this work around, your stats will change in a day or two as long as the original thread was within the Star Seller period (but not retroactively).
If it is Spam, you need to mark it as such. Otherwise Etsy thinks you ignored the message.
Was it a recent message? Try marking it a Spam now, it should adjust within 24 hours.
I wasn't able to mark as spam on the new seller app. I just saw mark as unread or trash. Am I missing something or is it just more crumminess from the app.
Do you think it would work if the message got missed about a month ago if you mark it as spam once you realize it is what is causing the percentage to go down? I marked it now, I wonder if it will update like you mentioned.

Thanks for your response. I drove a bit deeper and found that it was also a message from a seller that was just saying thanks for purchasing. This seems crazy that it could affect my selling account when it wasn't even related to selling and it didn't require a response.
If you don't have time to reply to messages, set the Automatic Response.
I couldn't find how to mark a message as spam on the new App. I do not like the new Etsy seller app at all. Spam message but I could only see a way to mark as Trash or Unread. I came upstairs to the desktop just to mark as spam.
They totally failed to add the mark as spam option to the new app which is just a ridiculous thing to omit in my opinion.
Just thought I would share....I just learned that the mark as spam button is there in the etsy shopping app. Today has been a bad spam day for me. 7 spam messages in one day so far and 2 of the spammers were messaging like they were texting so one line at a time. One of them was starting a brand new message for each line of text uggg. (sorry I rambled)
Anyways...I did manage to mark them all as spam using the shopping app. It's not ideal but it's an option at least. Just thought I would pass along the info in case it was useful.
This option is only available from a desktop.
Same for me, I always respond without the hour.
I Found an old messages that were considered spam, even if this person bought from my shop!!
I responded and now it damaged my time of reply… really disappointed in the system! I have been star seller since it started, the spams should not affect the rankings!
