Its not fair to count messages I exchanged as a customer wityith with another Etsy seller about a purchase I made from them against my own Etsy message response rate.
"What messages count towards the message response rate?
Why not?
How does Etsy know that the seller didn't see your purchase, see you have a shop, and have a question for you about an item in your shop? How do they know that it should be excluded from the metrics?
It says in the program that message from both buyers and sellers count.
It's been this way since the program was rolled out a few years ago.
You have the option to create a buyer only account. That way all messages from sellers you've bought from will go there, and you don't have to worry about them counting against you if you don't respond.
There are literally millions of active shops on Etsy. I can only imagine how many messages are sent through their system every single day. You're only responsible for making sure you handle the ones that come to you. If you haven't read the other posts, the last few changes Etsy has made haven't gone too well (sellers can't access the forums, legit messages going to spam). I think the last thing we need is them trying to figure out how to sort out what messages should be discarded from the response metrics. We as sellers need to take responsibility for ourselves and stop trying to make Etsy automate it for us, because when do it doesn't go well.
@wisewomanjewelry Many people would agree with you but Etsy's system doesn't take into consideration the context of the message.
@wisewomanjewelry: "Its not fair to count messages I exchanged as a customer ..." Perhaps not, but unfortunately, Etsy disagrees. As it says right on your Star Seller page and elsewhere, you need to reply to the FIRST message of EVERY NEW INCOMING THREAD within 24 hours. It does not matter who sent it, the subject matter, if it is a duplicate or blank or anything else. If it is SPAM then it should be marked as such.
The Star Seller metric for messages is very simplistic and binary - either you replied to (or marked as SPAM) that first message of a new incoming thread within 24 hours or you did not.
