Hi everyone,
I wanted to ask if any other sellers have recently faced this issue. One of my best-selling listings, a pavé set Cuban link chain that is entirely handmade in my own workshop, was deactivated by Etsy for allegedly violating the handmade policy.
I did not receive any email or warning about the deactivation. When I contacted Etsy support, they told me a help ticket has been raised and I will need to wait for a response. I offered to provide proof of the handmade process but was not given any immediate option to submit that information.
This situation is very frustrating as the product is genuinely handmade and its removal is directly affecting my sales and revenue. I am trying to understand if this is an isolated case or part of a larger issue.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? Any advice or shared experiences would really help.
Thanks,
TwoYoungz
If you were using the word Cuban then that’s why.
I don’t understand how including a word like “Cuban” in a product title means the item isn’t handmade. Is the word “Cuban” prohibited by Etsy policies? I’ve used it in many of my other listings, and they’re still live.
If you did not receive any email or warning, how do you know it is for allegedly violating the handmade policy??? It is probably because you used the word "Cuban"
I discussed it with an Etsy support agent via Quick Chat, and they informed me about it and also helped raise a help ticket on my behalf.
I doubt it has anything to do with being handmade, it's because you used "Cuban" and Etsy thinks the item IS from Cuba and it's on the Sanctions list.
When Etsy figures out it's NOT from Cuba they'll probably reactivate it but it might take a while.
Sanctions Policy - Our House Rules | Etsy
For example, these restrictions generally prohibit, but are not limited to, transactions involving:
Prohibited Items Policy - Our House Rules | Etsy
When you use Etsy’s services, you are also responsible for complying with economic sanctions and trade restrictions, including those implemented by the Office of Foreign Assets Control ("OFAC") of the US Department of the Treasury. All Etsy members must comply with our Sanctions Policy, regardless of their location.
Examples of What is Allowed:
Sanctions or compliance programs may have certain exceptions to their restrictions. For example, while OFAC broadly prohibits transactions involving goods that originate from sanctioned areas, there are exceptions for informational materials such as publications, films, posters, phonograph records, photographs, tapes, compact disks, and certain artworks. Items that don’t originate from a sanctioned area but make a reference to a sanctioned area are generally permitted.
Items that aren’t from Cuba, but are Cuban style, such as “Cuban Style Fedora Hats”
Thank you for the detailed explanation. That could be the case, but when I spoke with an Etsy support agent via Quick Chat, they informed me that the listing was removed due to a violation of the handmade policy.
However, if the removal was related to the use of the word “Cuban” in the title, it’s confusing because I have other active listings in my shop that also use the same word and are still live.
It’s quite strange!
so, you may want to take another look at your shop. Because, IP issues abound.
I see Warner Brothers logo, Nike logo, etc.
sometimes the take down is for something else...per forum lore.
These are custom pendants I create on request and are simply inspired by those logos. Would that still count as a policy violation?
100% yes
The word Cuban is probably the reason. I know it is a style of jewelry chain link but you may need to call it something else instead or maybe Etsy would accept Cuban style.
I can give it a try, but first I need to confirm that this is actually the reason.
Welcome to Etsy!
Wow, you really made all of these items yourself (because they’re listed as handmade by you)? Impressive.
Thanks for the appreciation! Yes, all of those pieces are handmade by me.
I had a "Cuban Cigars" sign deactivated, even tough it was not from Cuba and I was not selling cigars.
That’s strange. Don’t you think Etsy should involve human intervention in such cases instead of relying solely on automated systems?
"Inspired by" does not absolve you from infringement!
Okay, understood. In that case, I’ll go ahead and take those listings down myself.
Just curious — can anyone let me know how I can track the progress of my help ticket?
@Twoyoungz : ya know, before you start poking Etsy to look at your shop... you just might want to clean things up a bit first. several posters upstream advised you to remove the infringing listings, and yesterday you said "I’ll go ahead and take those listings down myself."... and yet, those listings are still up.
you're breaking Etsy's rules... the forum posters can't help you unless you help yourself first.
It's most likely the word "Cuban" and etsy support might never tell you the exact reason why. I think they are instructed to say as little as possible about removed listings and just generally reference the problem.
Since you have other listings with this word, you might want to scrub them of it. Etsy listings might be segregated into different subsets of data in order to manage it all. I don't know for sure and I'm just guessing but it's possible they launch the bots looking for problematic words against only a few data subsets at a time which is how the other listings don't get caught. In other words, those other listings are stored somewhere in the data that they aren't looking at right now. But they might look at it later...so remove the word of you might end up with multiple violations.
