I just started my shop last week, and I received this message. I provided my email address and clicked the link, which brought me to a suspicious webpage wanting my bank card info, which Etsy has on file.
Hello!
Is this a scam or no?
Yes, it's a scam.
Thanks for letting me know! I put in my CC info so now I better hurry up and cancel the card. Yikes!
If you clicked the link, run a virus / malware scan on whatever device you were using just to be safe.
Great idea! Gosh I can’t believe I fell for this.
@faithfulfibersco you aren't alone! It's happened to so many, and I am glad that you figured this out pretty quickly and canceled the card. Some people have actually provided bank account numbers and that's much harder to deal with than a stolen CC number.
Etsy will never message us asking for and personal or financial info. They already have our email address, and if they need any banking info verified, there will be a message in the seller dashboard.
Definitely a scam, and I'm sorry you were targeted. Scammers have been hitting new Sellers as well as seasoned ones. Please don't beat yourself up over it either; this is in epidemic proportions. Idiot scammers use threats of Shop suspension, QR Codes, as well as "Verification" are others, including posing as Etsy Staff/Support, etc. When you receive a LEGIT Message from Etsy Support/Staff, etc., it will appear in the "From Etsy" Folder (in Messages). If it isn't there, Mark the Message as Spam (so you don't get dinged for S Seller). *"From Etsy" Folder was not on the App until recently (a highlighted blurb on the Message). The thing is, should you not see this first (and be familiar with it), you could receive a scammer's Message beforehand. Also, the App does not allow you to Mark the Message as Spam (you must use a browser instead, or use the Buyer App).
Also for future, many scammers are posing as "Buyers", stating they need your email for an Order. They don't, Etsy already has it. When you receive a LEGIT Order, it will appear in "Orders & Shipping" (Left Column of Shop Dashboard); if it isn't there, you have no Order. Mark the scammer's Message as Spam (so you don't get dinged for S Seller). And never click on links or engage with them.
In addition to cancelling your card, it would be a good idea to run a scan on all of your devices.
Etsy should be able to nail these FAKE accounts who are impersonating Etsy Staff/Support, etc. It's happening way too often. Here is the Announcement about the "From Etsy" Folder (currently this is in past Announcements).
