Is this a scam?

Jump to solution

I recently opened my shop over the weekend. I just received a message from Technical Support asking to verify the legitimacy of my shop with their 5 minute process. There is a large orange QR code at the bottom. I saw the seller handbook article https://www.etsy.com/seller-handbook/article/1241780194948?ref=handbook and am wondering if this is what they meant.

I havent clicked any links, just want to know if this is legit? Did anyone else get one?

Etsy would not send you a QR code.

If messages come into you inbox claiming to be from Etsy it is scam

Never click on links, scan QR codes or download via messenger. Do not provide these people with any information or attempt to verify anything. Just stick the message in your spam folder so Etsy is alerted to the fraudulent user

It's a scam. Don't click on it.

Just checked your shop, it is working and your payments are active.

You may want to look up on trademark infringement though

Mechwarrior and Bella can not be sold unless you have a licence from the IP holders

go to your etsy dashboard through a browser, not the app

On the left hand side are folders,

if the message is not in the "from Etsy" folder as well as the inbox folder, it's not from etsy

go to the inbox folder and mark as spam

never c.lick on links that take you off etsy

I just made this mistake! I clicked on the QR code and gave them my bank card info. I was tricked because these messages were in my email along with all my other Esty messages and I am new to all of this. The asked for the amount of money in my bank account too, which is only enough to get through the month. My husband is going to be mad when he finds out. They wanted an SMS code bank from my bank which they didn't receive. They then wanted me to call my bank to get it which I didn't do. Instead my bank sent me a fraud alert message and asked me to call them immediately, which I am about to do.

@MorningBirdFarm  I'm very sorry you were targeted. Scammers have been hitting new Sellers as well as seasoned ones.  "Verification" and scanning of QR Codes are popular scams, as well as posing as Etsy Staff/Support, etc.   When you receive a LEGIT Message from Etsy Support/Staff, etc., it will appear in the "From Etsy" Folder (in Messages). If it isn't there, Mark the Message as Spam (so you don't get dinged for S Seller).  *"From Etsy" Folder was not on the App until recently (a highlighted blurb on the Message). The thing is, should you not see this first (and be familiar with it), you could receive a scammer's Message beforehand. Also, the App does not allow you to Mark the Message as Spam (you must use a browser instead, or use the Buyer App).

Also for future, many scammers are posing as "Buyers", stating they need your email for an Order. They don't, Etsy already has it. When you receive a LEGIT Order, it will appear in "Orders & Shipping" (Left Column of Shop Dashboard); if it isn't there, you have no Order.  Mark the scammer's Message as Spam (so you don't get dinged for S Seller).  And never click on links or engage with them.

Here is the Help Article re: Scams.

Please do contact your bank about this theft. Run virus scans on all of your devices. And do report this to the authorities; you are the victim of a cybercrime.

Hope this is helpful to you, and may this garbage cease for you and for others.
