Invalid API key

Jump to solution

Used to be my listings on Etsy seamlessly appeared on our website as well. Within the last few days that has changed. Now our website has no listings - just a message saying "invalid API Key". We changed nothing on our end. Anyone else having issues similar?

@WNYTradingCo Etsy seems to be changing who they allow to use their API, so whatever app you used to show your listings on your web site is probably where you need to look.

What Etsy API call were you using? Or what was the bit of code that is being used on your website?

Etsy used to allow us to show our listings while Etsy stored the photo and information on their servers. Etsy is no longer allowing that so you may have to copy the photos to your website and then provide a link back to Etsy to purchase.

Thank you @LandKbeads and @PrairiePrimitives. As I suspected, this is above my pay grade, lol, but now I know who can help me. Thanks for your counsel and advice!

Re: Invalid API key

.@LandKbeads, now you've got me thinking. If I have to go through all the trouble of relisting my photos and linking my website listing page back to Etsy for purchase, just for the privilege of paying the seller fees to Etsy, why would I do that? Not trying to be controversial -- just trying to understand the logic. Seems like Etsy is playing Russian Roulette. Either I'm not going to do the extra website work involved and lose whatever traffic I'm generating, or I'm going to do the work and take the sale at my own website rather than include an Etsy link (essentially, leave Etsy).

This must have been an announcement that I either missed or ignored. If not, I would think that every seller who links a website to their Etsy shop would be up in arms.

@WNYTradingCo  Exactly! I don't know when this particular API was changed and I no longer troll the API forum to check what's changing. I do think it has to do with thieves lifting Etsy images to steal revenue from sellers.

I stopped advertising for Etsy years ago and only advertise my website. And I host all images there. Do try to change the first image to be different than the one on Etsy due to the Etsy BOTs thinking you are a reseller (yeah, it happens but mostly handmade I think).

@WNYTradingCo If your web site doesn't offer an easy to set up shopping cart, PayPal still offers "buy buttons" if you can add the code to your site! Don't know if this is above your pay grade or not?  ; - )  There may be similar buttons available for other payment options too!

.@PrairiePrimitives Definitely above my pay grade, lol, but not my partner's. The only thing holding me back from selling directly from my website was that I was too lazy to learn how to do it. If I have to learn how to solve this API issue, then . . . It's not as though Etsy is sending customers to my shop in droves.

@WNYTradingCo It would probably be above my pay grade these days too. I understood HTML and could code it, but when coding changed to CSS (and whatever else may be used these days), I gave up!

I know. Didn't we used to code HTML onto rocks with a chisel? lol

I am a former software developer (pre-dating the WWW) and HTML was a game changer back in the day.

My daughter recently asked me if I knew anything about "Liquid" programming language. Nope and I'm too old to care!

.@LandKbeadsI think that's the one where you keep drinking gin until your line of code makes sense.

@WNYTradingCo If you have not migrated your website to use API v3, that may be the issue. I used to do exactly as described but dropped out when I could not get API v3 callbacks to work consistently/persistently.

.@CBGWorkshop I'm pretty sure you hit the nail on the head. I wasn't even aware of API v3, let alone migrated to it. My tech guy knew exactly what it was and even tried to explain it to me using little words. This was my fault everyone (she said red-faced), and thank you for taking time to help with the solution!
