I like the "private note" option. There should also be an option for a "public note"

Customers almost always forget to add details needed to complete their order this "public note" on the invoice will enable me to have their order details all on one sheet of paper instead of multiple 3M Post-it Notes when a small breeze could ruin your day

I wish there was a way to add private/seller notes to a buyer account.   I know the star is there but it would be handy if I don't recognize the username to be able to see my reminders at a glance.

We have the option to print private notes on the packing slip. I do it all the time.

When you go to print and the dialog box comes up. 

On the right side of the packing slip, where it says customize options, you get all these:

Add anything below to your packing slips.

For gift receipts, only a coupon code can be added.
