False Suspension Led To Open Cases Which Ruined Store

About a month and a half ago, just as sales were starting to pick up on my Etsy store, I logged in one day to find my account had been suspended.

I quickly submitted an appeal, confident that my listings and shopfront adhered to Etsy’s Terms & Conditions. However, while my account was suspended and my appeal was being reviewed, customers were prompted to open cases against my store. This led to 8 open cases and full refunds being issued to customers for orders I had already fulfilled and were in transit.

After reviewing my appeal, Etsy reinstated my store and acknowledged that it had been "suspended in error." However, the cases opened during the suspension still reflect on my account, severely impacting my store’s visibility and rankings. As a result, my listings barely appear in search results.

To make matters worse, earlier today I received another automated message from Etsy stating that my store will be permanently suspended on October 1st for supposedly "not meeting customer service standards." This feels incredibly unfair since the cases that are being held against me were a direct result of the false suspension, and I had no control over customers being prompted to open them. This situation in no way reflects how I manage my store or the high standards I uphold.

Etsy support has not been helpful at all, and although I’m trying to get this resolved, I’m not hopeful. It feels like I’m racing against the clock to save my store from being banned over circumstances entirely out of my control.

Wow. Sorry this happened to you.

Sounds like you really need to get your issue escalated to a specialist since the 'not meeting customer service expectations' is a result of a suspension in error.

I hope you can get the Etsy attention required before October 1st.

And I have heard in forum posts that stores have been able to get suspensions reversed ... like you did the first time.

Unfortunately so far when I have been able to connect with someone they have just told me they will pass it onto the relevant team and then I receive an automated response that is really vague and doesn't address my issue. Thankyou though! I will continue to keep trying new ways to get my store back on track.

@EliteEdgeCustoms: "... I receive an automated response that is really vague ..." Often the first response you get from customer support is an automated reply meant to weed out the people who contact support over common issues that can be easily solved.

Every eMail from Etsy support should have a link something like "I Still Need Help". Click on that link in each reply from Etsy (or actually reply stating that you still need help) to keep the report alive otherwise Etsy will assume that it is resolved. You may have to do this innumerable times, before anything is done but do not give up. DO NOT open a new issue or contact Etsy multiple times about the same issue (doing so appears to close the one you already opened and puts the new one on the bottom of the pile).

I'm so sorry, that puts you in such a terrible position. I hope you can get an actual human to look at your case.

Even if your shop doesn't get closed, and even if those dings are removed, your shop and search placement have been damaged by the mistaken suspension and the refunds.

Yep! Its a bit of a rough situation.. Hopefully If I'm able to get these cases removed from my store I will be able to keep providing great customer service and slowly build my search placements back over time? Honestly not entirely sure how those things work.. Thanks for your kind words though

@EliteEdgeCustoms: In the mean time, you might want to read up about the new rules for first images and for mock ups particularly for personalized items https://www.etsy.com/legal/policy/listing-image-requirements/253962679005 to see how they apply to you.

While I can offer no fix I would halt sales before the October 1st date just in case so you arent shipping items for free. The bots make mistakes and hopefully etsy fixes your shop.

Yeah that's a great Idea, I might let my customers know that and then stop sales 2 weeks before that deadline just to ensure all orders are fulfilled correctly and I'm not fulfilling orders for free. The first time that happened it cost me hundreds in refunds, material costs and shipping expenses!

I'm so sorry this has happened to you.  I sincerely hope you're able to reach a human who can sort this mess out.  I think the thing I find so egregious about this is that Etsy makes a mistake that can damage our shops and then for all intents and purposes seems to walk away from it by making it next to impossible for the seller to get the help they need without jumping through hoops.  I understand Etsy's reliance on bots, but when bots make mistakes and "suspend in error" that should be a huge red flag for Etsy.

Re: False Suspension Led To Open Cases Which Ruined Store

Each and every thumbnail in your shop has "Team Name" text.

This is from Etsy:

"Listings for items ‘made by a seller’ must use original photo or video content of the final product. When listing personalized or custom items such as monogrammed or engraved accessories, your first image must show a finished, customized item rather than the blank product or placeholder text (e.g. “Your Text Here”)"

More here: https://www.etsy.com/legal/creativity/

I checked several of your listings, shop announcement and About page. Considering a very specific niche (in terms of trademarks), I expected to see some super clear and loud disclaimer, something like "WE DO NOT ACCEPT ORDERS ON TRADEMARKED NAMES / LOGOS".

Instead there's "Please note, I am not responsible for any copyrighted materials provided by customers. By submitting a name, logo, or other content, EliteEdgeCustoms is not responsible for verifying copyright ownership or licensing."

yes, this is a new rule from them. I am working on updating to follow this as soon as possible. I got told the disclaimer in the description is enough.

You say you are in Illinois yet your stones ship from India. If I ordered thinking I would get my order from US company, and yet…so where are you really from.

This does suck, but I don't think it reflects poorly on your shop from a customer's standpoint.  I looked at your shop and you still have 5 stars and the most recent review you received was yesterday.

The only thing it might have affected is your star seller status.  You can earn that back and customers don't really pay attention to it.
