I had an Etsy Insider sale where Etsy charged and refunded shipping of $10.76. The actual calculated shipping set on the item was more at $11.76. Anyone else seeing this issue? I've had other Insider sales where it was correct, so don't know if there is a max Etsy covers or it was a technical problem. If there is a max, that is another kind of problem.
I believe there is a max of $20 that Etsy will cover under the insider program; but then the buyer would pay any amount above this. So in theory, the seller should not be out any money. I say "in theory", because this is Etsy.
ETA - I just read in ecommercebytes on the buyer benefits of the program that "For items with shipping costs over $20, you [i.e., the buyer] are responsible for the full cost of shipping." Its sounds like Etsy doesn't pay the first $20 and the buyer the remainder, but rather that item would simply not qualify for the Insider shipping benefit.
Thanks for the info. So my glitch is an Etsy programming error then. As it should have charged and paid $11.76.
@StainedGlassYourWay, sounds like it. But these days, I have little motivation to chase down Etsy support over $1. My time is worth more than how long that would likely take.
I'm not try to recoup my $1. Definitely not worth my time for that!! Just posting here to alert Etsy and others to an issue to look out for.
@StainedGlassYourWay, yes, Etsy should be made aware if there are bugs in their programming, especially when a program is in beta. Maybe they'll pay attention to reports in the technical issues forums (wishful thinking ; ))
I have been seeing a fair number of discrepancies with calculated shipping - it seems that Etsy calculates one amount when the customer shops and then a different amount a day later when I buy the label - even if all settings, package size, weights, etc. are the same. The difference is usually pennies, small amounts, but I have noticed this several times.
I have had 2 sales and Etsy insider stated Etsy paid shipping but never did we did then item broke and gave buyer full refund so we paid shipping again. 2nd Etsy insider sale we only paid once still no money from Etsy. Contacted Etsy about this and I was to get reply but we all know how that goes no reply for any questions I have asked over the last 4 years so I guess from now on we will cancel any order with Etsy insider paying shipping and explain to customer why. Then if enough buyers complain Etsy might get off their dead ***** and fix the glitch in the system.

Unfortunately, that action will likely NOT achieve your desired result. This is not your buyer's issue, it is between you and Etsy. Penalising the buyer probably won't make them complain to Etsy, it is more likely they will just go back to search and find another Etsy shop to buy from, and they probably won't return to your shop.
could the discrepancy in the price have something to do with the fees Etsy takes on shipping? So the customer receives their shipping back to accommodate on the free shipping, but Etsy still takes their shipping fees from the seller.
