Adding Taxpayer ID

Jump to solution

Every single day I get at least one email from Etsy (it is more often 2 or 3 a day) asking me to add my taxpayer ID (VAT registration number).  I am currently around £10,000 away from hitting the UK threshold for registering for VAT, on a rolling 12 month basis.  I have spoken to Etsy and they have said that it is an automated email that is triggered when I am near the threshold - but I am £10,000 away!!!  Does anyone else experience this - it is so annoying, and the email threatens to suspend/close my shop if I don't comply, which is horrid!  I just wish I could get them to stop sending it...so frustrating!  Anyone got any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Etsy uses a calendar year, not a 12 month rolling period like HMRC. i.e Etsy are wrong.

"If you’re located in the EU, Norway, Switzerland, or the UK and your gross sales meet or exceed the local threshold in the calendar year"

Here's my original response on finding the same info I was looking for about when ETsy sends the automatic emails.

https://community.etsy.com/t5/Managing-Your-Shop/Taxpayer-ID-request-UK-seller/m-p/136494175/highlig...

"You'll receive 3 notifications;

  • First warning: 50%
  • Second warning: 75%
  • FINAL warning with shop suspension: 90%

We are unable to remove this requirement from shops. These thresholds will also reset January 1st of next year."

Even though VAT is not a calendar year; and the first warning being at £42,500 since January 1st.

I have also been receiving 2 or 3 emails per day over the last week or so. I have spoken to Etsy as I am £37000 away from the UK threshold. The person I spoke to at customer support checked with the finance department and gave me the exact figure of my UK sales  for this year and confirmed it is only UK sales that they take into account over a 12 month rolling period. I was told I can ignore the messages for now as I'm still a long way off and that the repeated emails are probably a glitch.. it's still a bit worrying though!

I am also a bit miffed as I'm retired and make about £30 per month so tax is well and truly out of the question.

Any one understand this?
