Where to get textiles?

Hi!

I sew patchwork bags and other items out of old jeans and my freinds know that, so every now and then I get old Jeans from them - my shop is still small, so untill now I had allways enough to work with.
But one day that won't be enough anymore...
So I was wondering: Where do you get your textiles from?

Re: Where to get textiles?

I go to thrift stores and dig through the bargain bins. Sadly, I'm not getting my supplies for free, but it's not too expensive.

Re: Where to get textiles?

Put a word in with the local thrift store to save for you the jeans they are tossing out. Some will toss out the jeans/denim that is too worn to sell (in their opinion) but it may work for your projects.

Other than that, as Kristy said, dig, dig, dig :)

Re: Where to get textiles?

I love going to thrift stores. The two in my area will have 1/2 off a certain color tag. Many times I'll go and only purchase items with that color.

Also, yard sales that have alot of clothing and you can sometimes get a bag of clothes for a $1.00 a bag.

Re: Where to get textiles?

I have found that yard sales and garage sales are the best to find clothing at good prices. Even estate sales. Plus church rummage sales are also good. I have signed up to recieve an email about sales that are in my area.

Re: Where to get textiles?

I want to share what I did today. I traveled to a larger city that has thrift stores so much bigger than my local ones! I thought I was in thrift store heaven! They were about 1 1/2 hours away and if you have time to go and only purchase items that have the color of the day for half off, I think it would be worth your while!

Re: Where to get textiles?

I love going to the thrift shop in my hometown. They have new, great specials every week, and they are totally inexpensive. They clear out their inventory quarterly, and if you can catch them on the right day, you can get a lot of things for free. The young woman who runs the shop also gives me ideas for new projects. It's an awesome set up! I feel lucky:)

Re: Where to get textiles?

I am fortunate that one of the charity thrift stores in my town sends all of the inventory from its shops, as well as what they feel in unsellable to a "Dig and Save" store where I can buy clothing for $1 per pound. I feel even better about shopping there, as the clothing has already had a chance to be sold to a needy person.

I also like church rummage sales.

Look in your area for Goodwill Outlet stores. They sell things that are damaged or don't sell in the regular stores. Clothing is $0.79/lb. and they always have a lot of denim.

Re: Where to get textiles?

Resale shops are my nirvana. Some are pricier than others, but like the others said, there are even sale days at thrift stores! I have one favorite I scout out fabrics, rugs and blankets for my upcycling, but I also make sure I hit the book department as there always seems to be sooooo many craft and art books I can find so cheap with new ideas for my work!
