Which patterns are the most valuable?

I was out treasure-hunting today when I saw a lovely Pyrex mixing bowl in the Snowflake Blue (blue background) pattern. It seemed to be in very good condition (it just needed a good scrub), and I nearly bought it. However, I'm going to be moving in 5 weeks and am trying to avoid acquiring any more heavy inventory, so I left it at the store.

So I'm wondering... are there any particularly rare/sought-after patterns that one should never pass up? I know this is more or less a matter of opinion, but I'd love to hear your views. :)

Re: Which patterns are the most valuable?

From my experience, some of the more popular patterns are (or maybe these are just my favorites)...

Primary Colors
Butterprint
Friendship

The promotional patterns are always more rare. There is a good website, www.pyrexlove.com that I refer to often when I've brought something home I need help identifying.

Re: Which patterns are the most valuable?

Hmm- I think it depends. There are more popular patterns like Butterprint, Snowflake, Primary, Crazy Daisy, and Gooseberry, and then there are rare patterns like Nell said, which are the promo ones. I sell more of the common patterns than I do of the promos- I guess it's because people choose to collect common patterns and then they want the last few pieces that they can't find for whatever reason.
Also, certain pieces like the refrigerator dishes with lids are harder to find than say, a mixing bowl. Also, look out for butter dishes, with lids.

Balloons is pretty hard to get your hands on, too. And if you do it typically costs an arm and a leg. My mother-in-law gifted me a set and I nearly fell out of my chair. Love it! Also, I just learned about Australian and European Pyrex. Some of the patterns are fantastic!

Re: Which patterns are the most valuable?

I just recently started collecting Pyrex and I'm immediately drawn to the bright colors. I don't know the names of any particular pieces, but Pink Gooseberry sounds lovely!!

Re: Which patterns are the most valuable?

Pink Gooseberry is very desired. I have the yellow gooseberry, not the pink. I tend to try to collect the more "manly" piece. I do have a good amount of pink as well. The Lucky in Love pattern (ebay it- currently going for $1125) is one I saw in the wild 5 years ago or so, at a local flea market. It was before I really started collecting.

Another "impossible" to find piece is the "Blue Clouds" Space - Saver. The official name is not known. (It isn't officially in the Space-Savers lineup) Only two are known to exist. The other came up on Ebay, after the lady had found out how rare it is. It did not have the tray or the top included. Mine is complete. It will be featured in Barbara Mauzy's new Pyrex book! Along with a "Shur-Out" ashtray. The best thing to do- without buying a book on Pyrex,(imo) is to scour the Pyrex Love websites and blogs.

Chances are, if you look around long enough, you will find just about every piece you want. Prices have been going up up and away - Kind of like the Balloon- with the nostalgic factor having a lot to do with it. Sorry, I'm so late on this post.
Happy Hunting!
Regards,
Andrew Grover

Re: Which patterns are the most valuable?

I haven't sold a lot of pyrex, but the ones that sold were pink gooseberry and friendship. I wish I had bought up the balloon pattern when I first looked it up on ebay - it was so much cheaper then!

Re: Which patterns are the most valuable?

Hello Pyrex fans and experts,

I am wondering about the collectability of English Pyrex (JAJ) , especially in the USA. Are US collectors interested in patterns such as Carnaby, Fiesta, Harvest, Chelsea etc and the English JAJ/Crown versions of Snowflake and Daisy etc?

JAJ Pyrex like the patterns mentioned above are much easier to find here in NZ (as well as Australian Pyrex by Agee). I also just came across an American shop selling English Pyrex for approx $100-$350USD! Maybe I am pricing mine too cheap? Or maybe I should hold on to them if they are becoming collectors items!

Also interested to know if people are collecting Glasbake, Federal and Fire-King and what patterns and colours are popular in these brands. I think they are less collectible, except for old Fire-King and jadeite items which are proper antiques.

Anyway! Interested to hear your thoughts. Thanks :)

Re: Which patterns are the most valuable?

Omigosh - actually up to $460USD for a JAJ English space saver with lid!

Why? It looks exactly the same as the USA version?

Re: Which patterns are the most valuable?

I didn't realize butterprint was popular. I just got some butterprint from my neighbor's trash. The large cinderella bowl and three refriderator dishes with lids...not a single chip. I love the fridge dishes, so handy and stackable.
