How Stumbleupon works

Lets use this thread to add info about how it works (tips, info, and questions)
Stumbleupon gets much easier when you download the toolbar buttons. After you have the buttons then all you have to do is click the thumbs up button when you are on a page you want to stumble ( like a shop page) then add tags and a short review. The most important thing is the tags. You want to add at least 6 or 7 tags so that those who are interested in similar items can find that shop or item. Reviews don't need to be long just one or two sentences. If someone has already Stumbled that page then it won't ask you for a review you just add your thumbs up!

OK - I'm a newbee - how do you download the Stumble buttons? I read through the help on Stumble and didn't find it.

Thank heaven for Google - I managed to down load the stumble tool bar. Now to start stumbling!

Getting lots of views but all on the same items. So 1 of my items has 700+ views, another 400+, another 300+, then all the rest are 1.

What do you think this is about?

Getting lots of views to these items in my shop - great but no sales have come from it yet I don't think.

What are everyone elses experiences??

I'm getting the same thing. I'm not worried about the sales more views means more chance of sales. One thing I always do is use "shopping" as a tag I figure that way some shoppers and not only lookers will find their way to our items. But why some items get a ton of views and some don't I haven't figured out yet. Also give it time, I went to the stumbleupon web site and typed etsy in the search bar and then kept hitting the stumble button. It gave me some items, some profiles, some peoples blogs about etsy, and some treasuries most of the treasuries it gave me had thousands of views but they were created a few months ago. So it may take a while sometimes. I did get over 1500 views on one item in just a few hours but on another item it may take months to get that many. In any case It's working and hopefully as we explore it more and inform each other we will get better at using it!

How do you stumble a specific item? I can stumble the entire shop (which I wouldn't say is a problem) but when I click on the listings that people want stumbled a new window opens and my thumbs up button is gone.

One tip I would like to share:
:: Don't stumble just Etsy listings. Find other sites to stumble or StumbleUpon may think you are spamming.

I think it is great to be involved in a team that will stumble each others' items and shops because as much as we may want to, it is actually frowned upon to stumble your own sites and items.

I'm not sure but could it be that the items are already stumbled? Can you add your green thumbs up? Only one person seems to be able to stumble (review) a page, after that you can just add your thumbs up.

Loretta, I'm on Safari. I thought I had figured it out, I clicked on the shop and then found the item they wanted stumbled and clicked the thumbs up. But when I check my favorites on stumbleupon what I thought I had given the thumbs up to is not what is there. For instance I thought I just stumbled an item and when I clicked my favorites what was there was a treasury list, not them item. And even when I hit the back button the thumb stays green, like maybe I am stumbling ALL of etsy!
Maybe I should try it on firefox??

Just joined team -- I am working on my netbook which doesn't have the task bar -- will list & stumble when I get back to my main computer.
One thing that seems to help with views is that I stumble something -- then share through stumble via either facebook or twitter. If you hit the share button on your favorites page - you have options to share via facebook - twitter -- or even directly to followers

I did hear that if you stumble some non etsy sites here and there -- it will keep you from getting locked out because of spamming.

I have questions about tags. I usually use as many as I can think of - but I noticed some are just using one. "shopping" or "jewelry". One that I use that seems to help is "ecommerce". Should we be using more tags? I did add some tags to my stumbles that had already been discovered.

I've noticed that the items I stumble before anyone else don't get many views. Is that because I'm new to stumbleupon and don't have followers? I guess I thought you didn't necessarily need followers for the items to be viewed. Any suggestions on how to get followers? Follow people and hope they follow back?

Anyone know how to update the 'About You' section?? Seems like an easy thing to do, but every time I make changes and save they disappear. I checked the FAQs and they didn't help. Thanks for any suggestions!

You are right we should add as many tags as possible. I believe it's much more important than the review. I think few people read the reviews but stumbleuopn uses the tags to know which viewers to send our pages too. In addition as many tags that relate to the item as I can think of I add the tag "etsy
' Then it goes to viewers that already Like etsy.

WOW .. thanks for this thread. I've been trying to figure out some of this stuff for awhile--including why sometimes it asks me for reviews and tags and sometimes it doesn't...thanks so much, unfortunately I have nothing new to add at the moment, but just want to say thanks!

Just found this in an eHow article:

"Keep in mind that you will drive more traffic to your site if you stumble many other websites, not just your own. While the exact ratio you need to follow isn't publicly available, you should make a point to stumble several other sites for each time you stumble your own site."

I realize everyone here is stumbling each others's stuff, not their own, it's still important, as I understand things, to have a big list of favorites.
