I agree with your friend, a boring and quiet president is nice. I have no idea what Biden is up to and I am good with that. The toddler gets posted once in a while by random people on twitter but I just scroll by.

How nice that you were able to take a little trip, I thought you might have since there were no posts for a bit. I hope you both enjoyed yourselves, minus the lecture in Virginia. It must have been interesting seeing how the different states handled things.

Things are opening up here slowly but I still haven't gone anywhere. I rarely went out before the pandemic so just carrying on. We are both fully vaccinated now, my son is getting his 2nd shot on Friday too. It took a little longer because he works a lot so had to find time. I was knocked on my butt for a few weeks with my 1st shot, not new symptoms just flare of existing ones. I was considering not getting a 2nd shot because I was afraid it would be worse but had a relatively mild, more flu like reaction so glad I went ahead. We have a good uptake with vaccines so far and I hope it keep up so things get back to normal.

That collapsed condo is just awful, I feel so bad for the families and it must be so difficult for those searching. I hope Elsa misses it. Are you in the path, I haven't paid too close attention.

Stay safe and hopefully enjoy life some!

@finickypatternshop - We're North of Tampa on the Gulf Coast so we'll be feeling the storm sometime tonight - probably more like early in the morning. We spent this morning patrolling the yard for loose stuff, filled the bath tub with water for flushing the toilet & have fresh water in our "camping style" water jugs.
We just assume our power will go out & being a ruralish area, restoring our areas service is usually not a priority. Hopefully we'll keep Internet Service but who knows.

Am glad to hear you & your family vaccinated - or soon to be. I was wondering how the shots had affected you, am thankful nothing dire. But I agree, until more people opt to do so it's hard to convince yourself to go back to the old normal. We haven't even thought of dining out yet. Our County with just over 50% of the people vaccinated (or had at least one shot) yet anywhere we go no one is masked, except for some employees of the stores. The news I heard last night out of Israel didn't sound good on the efficacy of vaccines when it came to the new Delta Variant. Hopefully upon peer review maybe they'll find a glitch or two in the report. So it looks like we won't be doing anything else too exciting very soon.

The Miami condo collapse is quite frightening. I feel badly for the families involved. One news report said the building(s) had been erected on "reclaimed wetlands". To me that sounds like they filled in a coastal swale & "poof", usable land. I'm of the mindset that Mother Nature doesn't forget & when you hear the building has been ever so slowly sinking for 30 years or so, well, I'm not sure what to think.

Now off to do some old tv show streaming.

From the Miami Herald:
"Gov. DeSantis should have just laid it on the line when a reporter asked about the scores of Cuban-American demonstrators and their supporters who shut down a portion of the Palmetto Expressway in Miami-Dade County.

Instead, he deflected, talking about protesters in Cuba.

Implicit in the question, however, was whether the governor's vaunted anti-riot law - created in the wake of George Floyd demonstrations — would apply in the case of the demonstrators blocking streets and an expressway in Miami-Dade."

Then - news story reported on a variety of media sites:
"For $12, you can buy a red beverage cooler imprinted with the words: “How the hell am I going to be able to drink a beer with a mask on?”

Those with deeper pockets can be the proud owner of a $21 T-shirt stamped with the map of Florida and the logo “Love My Gov” and “Keep Florida Free”.

But perhaps the merchandise with the best sales potential are the drink koozies and T-shirts that say “Don’t Fauci My Florida”...

The phrase is a dig at Anthony Fauci, the chief White House medical adviser who because of his cautionary approach to the deadly coronavirus and mask-wearing has become a popular punch-bag for Republicans....

The timing of his new Fauci-bashing merchandise launch is unfortunate, given the state of his state. Though vaccination levels have risen in Florida, and infection rates fallen, Florida is grappling with a marked increase in new cases and hospitalizations as the highly contagious Delta variant kicks in.

Almost 3,000 Floridians are being hospitalized each day, according to the New York Times, the highest number in the nation and the fourth-highest per capita. New cases increased by 429% over the past 14 days, a dramatic surge only superseded by that in Tennessee.".....

All I can say is, before anyone moves to or decides to visit Florida, think about your health, your safety first.
Survived Elsa with strong winds & a few tree branches down, but, overall much better than we expected.
Everyone stay safe & healthy.

A follow up post. Yes, Gov. DeSantis should be soooo proud of his websites political fundraising efforts.

Florida released the weekly Covid Report today. Over the past 7 days, the State had 45,603 new cases, a positivity rate of 11.5%.
Sadly, 59 people died. Hospitals are reporting more patients at numbers that are causing them to sound alarms.

And then people look at you like you're odd because you don a mask before entering the grocery store? IMO Florida is a petri dish waiting to create its own variant. Thanks, but that's one experiment I don't want to participate in.

Everyone, stay safe and healthy.

First I need to correct my post from Friday. Apparently Florida had 231 deaths (from our Sunday Tampa Bay Times newspaper).

That, was the easy part. For the moment my Floridian Head is spinning.
DeSantis has the Dr. Fauci insults for sale on his reelection site, yet has the nerve to say that Health Care Officials & Politicians need to be careful on what they do to encourage people to get vaccinated.

An appeals court ruled against Florida regarding Cruises. Florida will appeal. DeSantis is of the opinion that the CDC has too much power & how are they able to dictate the "best practices" of the cruise line industry? After all, DeSantis has advised everyone this is a Billion Dollar Florida industry. So, yes, a price has been placed on peoples' heads.

Oh, & DeSantis' trip to Texas to inspect the border. Never mind that he sent Florida LE personnel to Texas, but he is stating that 70% of those trying to come into the US, they want to come to Florida. That many Florida Agricultural Businesses & Many Others have used & abused immigrants for decades, for those that survived the rigors, well, they're probably still in Florida.

Then criticize President Biden on Cuba, state the US "must" get the internet back into Cuba - "check".

Do something about Red Tide - the bloom now killing millions of fish, which are washing up on many Gulf Beaches? Never mind long term, how about a state-of-emergency so Cities & Counties can get some funds to pay for the removal of the fish. Then yeah, long term, realize the State needs to do something otherwise anyone who is affected by the smell &/or the toxins in the air that cause difficulty breathing & all the tourist and their money are going elsewhere. Well, everyone is still waiting.

Everyone please stay safe & healthy. It's becoming troubling out there - more reports of vaccinated people testing positive. Thankfully few reported hospitalizations & deaths.

How do guys like him get elected, so useless and now danger to others. The case counts are nuts, I’ve just got bits of news and can’t believe numbers are climbing again by that much. Something as simple as taking a vaccine to settle it down but no their ‘freedumbs’!

We had no cases locally since June 22 then Friday had one case and are now up to four, sounds like a group so hopefully that is it. We are just opening up a bit more, still with masks indoors, but the variants are concerning. So tired of this.

Not sure if I posted already but if all goes well I will be a grandma in January. My son and his wife are pregnant. A high risk pregnancy and she had a serious ectopic one last Sept so we are nervous but trying to stay positive. Poor girl vomits everything up.

Stay safe everyone!

@finickypatternshopCongratulations on your son and DIL's pregnancy!I hope everything works out well

Here in LA, we're back to wearing indoor masks, which I always wore anyway because there were too many un-vaccinated people around and COVID-19 wasn't over yet. I'm trying to prevent getting sick, period. Even a little bit sick. The numbers of new cases are up by a lot in LA County.

@finickypatternshop - Oh My - A Grandma! I do hope everything goes well for your son & his wife.

I guess Canada will be open the border to US citizens that are fully vaccinated sometime next month? Oh my - hope DeSantis doesn't get involved. Per our Gov. whether or not you're vaccinated is part of your Private Medical Record/History & no-one is supposed to be able to legally require/ask you about it. Oh, wait, Floridians would be entering a Foreign Country - DeSantis can be ignored!

I guess now various States are pushing for the US to reciprocate. We'll see what happens on Pres. Biden's end. Though right now, if I were a Canadian the thoughts of coming into the US would be rather low on my wish-list.

Thank you!

Yes, I believe Aug 9th our border is open to vaccinated Americans and then early Sept to other countries. I am a bit concerned because we live in a border town and but more concerned once the US is back open to Canadians. Many cross the border several times a week for shopping or casino visits and the vaccination rate is quite low and the cases are quite high in upper MI. I won't go for a while, I don't even want to go out here, kinda like being at home lol.

@OwlTalk - You're like myself & hubby. After surviving a year without getting ill, getting vaccinated, everything seems to be getting so much better & then "poof". Here in our County residents are stubbornly holding the line, and we're still at roughly 50% of residents having at least one jab. But with the Delta Variant out there spreading rapidly, we've gone from looking at our masks as a "just in case" measure to being a "we really need to wear masks". We don't want to get covid in any way, shape or form. Never mind that as retirees we'd be considered more at risk for complications. We don't want to suddenly have to be thinking about being a "long-hauler" or what might happen 5 or 10 years from now, how the virus could affect you.

But Florida is staying on the path they've set out. DeSantis intending to sue the CDC over cruise line "limitations", he has vowed no lockdowns, will fight anyone who imposes mask mandates - including School Boards. Florida is the only State that reports their covid numbers weekly - though the CDC may get daily reports, it's just the citizens who are in the dark (I think). And one recent news report said Florida is not releasing any numbers for Nursing Homes, ALFs or other long term care facilities. But he can criticize Cuomo with the best of them & the anti-Dr. Fauci stuff still for sale on his website.

I really want to be over the pandemic, but it appears it's something we're going to have to continue to try and live with - just hopefully not too long or "normal" is going to look rather weird.

Cases are significantly on the rise here in California as well. It makes me nervous. I closed my shop for over a year and just reopened about a month ago. I am my moms care partner with her home dialysis and she is at high risk. I couldn’t take any chances. (plus she was VERY sick for many months last year. It was awful.) of course we both got vaxed as soon as it was available, but her doctors and the kidney foundation both recommended she still mask if out and about. We haven’t been out much. To the outdoor nursery for plants is about it. When I reopened my shop, last month, case rates were low and vaccine rates relatively good. Now that this Delta variant is prevalent, our cases have skyrocketed. Yesterday was + 700 in San Diego county alone. I wear double mask @ the post office, but don’t feel super comfortable as no one else wears them, Our county hasn’t responded publicly to the fact that we have met all the “triggers” for Heath order modifications ( case percentages, increasing hospitalizations, etc & that really bothers me.) Plus the breakthrough cases. L.A. is saying 20% are breakthroughs with vaccinated people.

Anyhow, I know it is much worse in Florida - that would stress me out even more than I already am.

 everyone be safe out there!

The Florida Weekly Report - 73,199 new cases, 15.1% positivity rate, 78 deaths. Local info. hard to find - usually I have to wait a day or so to find our data. But, DeSantis just knows that the people of Florida will do the right thing & mask up if they're not vaccinated. But if our County is any indication, "No", they do not.

But, Florida's AG is going to the Supreme Court to challenge the Appeals Court ruling on the Cruise Line Industry being able to know a passenger's vaccination status. And he's announced he'd call a Special Session of Florida Legislators if anyone (schools his primary foe) imposes a mask requirement. The legislature would craft & pass a Law to allow DeSantis to ignore Health Guidelines.

Also interesting, though I haven't fact checked the numbers - AARP is stating that only 42% of Florida Workers at Nursing Homes, ALFs, are vaccinated. (I don't know if any in the State have required vaccinations for their employees.) If the percentage is true, DeSantis had better get off his high horse & get concerned about the people in the nursing homes, etc. While those who are vaccinated have protection from this new Delta Variant, when many of the residents are elderly &/or have health issues, this virus could quickly wreak havoc on this very vulnerable population. But then, since Florida's numbers are no longer daily, are hard to find in general anymore, maybe DeSantis figures he could just pull the wool over everyone's eyes.

Then, on the flip side of the coin, Alabama's (GOP) Governor calling out people for not getting vaccinated. Wow, I almost fell over when I heard that on the news today.

Everyone, stay safe & healthy.

This makes me feel so "warm & fuzzy" all over. Yeah, right. Let's hope researchers are correct & that the virus doesn't continue to mutate & therefore find a way to survive. It's already reported the Delta is different enough that the "natural immunity" people think they have/had from the original strain is not "doing its job":

"(USF Researchers) ....shows our region could be headed for a record-breaking spike in COVID-19 cases, with a peak likely in mid-September.

"The numbers that I'm seeing in terms of daily infection rates are doubling every seven days. And that's the fastest that I've seen since I started doing the calculations back in July of last year," explained Dr. Thomas Unnasch, USF College of Public Health Distinguished Professor.

It’s the same story at the state level. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, coronavirus cases topped 19,000 in early January.

"Florida today reported 13,000 cases a day. So we're getting pretty close to the peak that we saw back in January in terms of daily case numbers," said Unnasch.

That will likely continue to climb over the next four to six weeks, with unvaccinated people accounting for most of the infections.

Unnasch and other experts expect this to be the final wave of the pandemic.

"We're getting to a point where the virus is just not going to have enough people to infect that it's going to be able to maintain itself anymore," he said.

Meaning we will finally hit herd immunity.

Only about half of Floridians are fully vaccinated so the rest will get that protection by contracting the virus, but that will come with a human cost."....

Once again I need to correct my numbers. Florida experienced 282 deaths. (The lower numbers must be the total "local #" being reported by the NBC/CBS/ABC/Fox channel I'm getting the reports from.) Hospitalizations jumped by almost 1,900 since the previous week.

Overall in the State about 60% of eligible residents have received one shot. About 50% fully vaccinated.
Also to note, Florida no longer includes non-residents in their reported numbers. So, positive cases, hospitalizations & deaths are now attributed to their home State I guess.

Everyone, stay safe & healthy.

CBS News: "Florida and several other states have scaled back their reporting of COVID-19 statistics this month just as cases across the country started to skyrocket, depriving the public of real-time information on outbreaks, cases, hospitalizations and deaths in their communities.

The shift to weekly instead of daily reporting in Florida, Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota marked a notable shift during a pandemic in which coronavirus dashboards have become a staple for Americans closely tracking case counts and trends to navigate a crisis that has killed more than 600,000 people in the U.S."

So apparently Florida is not the only State that thinks daily data about a pandemic that is growing worse by the day is TMI.
In the weekly report from Florida's Health Dept. they indicate 6,639 people are (were? - Friday's #'s) Hospitalized.
All but one of Florida's 67 Counties are considered "High Transmission" areas.

The Biden Admin. has not reopened the US to International travel, per announcement yesterday. This is probably a good thing. The Country does not need to contribute any more to a growing issue.

So, please, if you are considering a vacation to Florida - please - rethink your plans.

Everyone, stay safe & healthy.

From Politico:

"Stance  It’s no secret that Gov. Ron DeSantis opposes mask mandates, especially the idea of requiring masks for school children even though many of them remain ineligible for vaccines.

Private gathering  But DeSantis on Monday reinforced that idea during a nearly hourlong roundtable he held behind closed doors at the state Capitol. It featured a clinical psychiatrist, a Stanford professor who has been highlighted several times during the pandemic by the governor, a professor in pediatrics, a parent with children at a Tallahassee charter school, and a student who was forced to wear a mask this past year at an elite Tallahassee private school.

So what happened? — DeSantis’ office didn’t let the (corporate, err, traditional, err, mainstream, err, not on the home team) media know about the roundtable until hours after it happened or even allow the state-run Florida Channel to record the event. His office did distribute a transcript late Monday evening when asked about it. And that transcript revealed that participants in the event decried the idea of requiring masks for school children with one participant calling it a form of “child abuse.”

Lamentations  Several of those who did take part in the event did stress that vaccines work. But DeSantis — whose campaign boasted recently that its “Don’t Fauci my Florida” T-shirts have turned into big sellers — complained about what he called a strict orthodoxy at work when it came to masks.

‘Sticking to their script’  “Our confidence in some of the pediatric leadership and some of the medical leadership has been shattered by how these people have reacted to this pandemic by not following data, ignoring countervailing evidence, sticking to their script, regardless of the outcomes, ignoring harms, particularly for young people and being willing and even delighting and imposing, really unspeakable burdens on the most defenseless and least dangerous segment of our society in terms of this, the kids,” the governor said.

Crucial time  The governor held this roundtable during a time when cases are surging in the state, hospitalizations are on the rise and school districts themselves — such as the one where the Capitol is located — are having a similar debate over mask policy. DeSantis is sticking to his viewpoint. Got it. But it seems he could discuss it and debate it out in the open, and be willing to take questions about it."

"It isn't based in science. There is no indication that areas with mask mandates have performed any better than areas without mask mandates. In fact, this policy could actually backfire," DeSantis press secretary Christina Pushaw told Fox News.

"Mandating masks for vaccinated people erodes public trust and confidence in the effectiveness of the vaccines. To me it appears that the government wants to be perceived as 'doing something' during a seasonal infection surge, even if their policy does not necessarily make people safer."

This if Gov. DeSantis' reaction to the CDC changing their policy on wearing masks in schools & the advisory that even vaccinated individuals should wear masks indoors, in certain areas of the Country.

Well, as everyone kept saying last year & many still mention, the COVID virus is New. Research is at best an accumulation of about 1 1/2 years of study. Never mind the mutations that keep appearing. I'm so glad DeSantis is a scientist who has this figured out.

But the real insult is "seasonal infection surge' comment. So, he knew the surge would happen but never upped his game even just a little bit? And now to say the vaccinated (or those considering it) will lose faith in the vaccine? Ah, "No". I'm protecting myself from those who did not understand the CDC's guidance - "if not vaccinated/fully vaccinated wear a mask indoors" - and now while I shouldn't get very ill (if any effects are felt at all) if I contracted the Delta Variant, I could pass it on to someone who isn't vaccinated & might get extremely ill, possibly die.

This is what happens when politics collide with Science & Health.

Tuesday - 16,038 new cases    Wednesday - 17,589 new cases
Seriously, I hope no one out there reading this is planning on vacationing here in Florida any time soon. We may be in for a real bumpy ride. H*ck, even Disney must think so - starting tomorrow ALL visitors will have to mask up when they're inside the attractions, shops, etc.

Trump glossed over the Health Crisis by creating the mind set that if you somehow acted responsibly, compassionately to the covid situation, you were somehow giving up your constitutional rights to some vague bogey-man.
Why did this line of bs work? I have No idea. But now instead of being able to see Covid in the rear-view mirror, it is once again a semi coming at us, barreling down the road, ready for a head on collision many will not walk away from.

Florida's weekly Covid Report released today.
The 7 day total = 110,477 New Cases    Positivity Rate - 18.1%    Deaths - No data yet.

(The daily report was 17,093 cases - so in 3 Days, Florida added 50,720 new cases.)

Other "breaking news" - Disney will now require employees to vaccinated within the next 60 days. This is in addition to the mask requirement for Visitors.
Publix Grocery Store will now require all their employees to mask up - vaccination status will be irrelevant. As for customers, right now their response is that they hope patrons "will do their part" in the fight against the virus.

And in the "shake my head" news, Gov. DeSantis has issued an executive order saying that it will be left up to parents as to whether or not a/their child wears a mask. It's bad enough I saw "now hiring teachers" signs last year, I see a repeat as 'tenured teachers' opt for retirement vs sticking it out for another year. There is already a huge sign in town screaming "School Bus Drivers Needed".
