The head of the Federal Election Commission released a statement on Thursday evening reiterating, emphatically, that foreign assistance is illegal in U.S. elections.

“Let me make something 100% clear to the American public and anyone running for public office: It is illegal for any person to solicit, accept, or receive anything of value from a foreign national in connection with a U.S. election,“ wrote Ellen Weintraub, chairwoman of the FEC. “This is not a novel concept.“

She also sent the statement via Twitter with the introductory line: “I would not have thought that I needed to say this."

Weintraub‘s statement comes after President Donald Trump told ABC News that he would probably hear out opposition information offered by a foreign national if given the chance in 2020. He also said he might not tell the FBI about it, even though bureau Director Christopher Wray said such assistance would need to be reported.

Trump told ABC News‘ George Stephanopoulos that hearing out foreign election information was not election interference, but rather “oppo research.“

Weintraub was clear in rebutting that characterization.

“Anyone who solicits or accepts foreign assistance risks being on the wrong end of a federal investigation,” she said in her statement. “Any political campaign that receives an offer of a prohibited donation from a foreign source should report that offer to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

Saturday’s planned #ImpeachTrump Day of Action has expanded greatly in the past week with over 100 events now set around the nation to call for House impeachment hearings against President Trump.

Organizers said that the number of events grew from 75 last week to 133 today. As of 9PM PST the number is now 140.

Currently over 10,000,000 signatures on combined impeach trump petitions.

As trump's spin doctor - told CBSN's "Red & Blue" that campaign staff should take the president's comments as a "directive" to handle foreign dirt through a two-pronged approach.

"The president's directive, as he said, [it's] a case by case basis. He said he would likely do both: Listen to what they have to say, but also report it to the FBI," McEnany said.

"Senate Republicans blocked legislation on Thursday that would force campaigns to notify the Federal Election Commission and the FBI about attempts by foreign nationals to influence an election. 

Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, tried to pass the Foreign Influence Reporting in Elections (FIRE) Act by unanimous consent. 

"This legislation is pretty simple, even for this body, it would require any presidential campaign that receives offers of assistance from an agent of a foreign government, has an obligation to report that offer of assistance to law enforcement, specifically the FBI," Warner said from the Senate floor.

Under Warner's bill, campaign officials would have to report contacts with foreign nationals who are trying to make campaign donations or coordinate with the campaign to the Federal Election Commission, which would in turn notify the FBI.

Senate rules allow any one senator to ask for unanimous consent to pass a bill or approve a nomination. But any one senator can object and block the request.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) objected to Warner's request, saying the reporting requirements within the legislation go "overboard." 

"The UC that was presented is overboard, and this is something that should be done in a thoughtful way. It should be done in a bipartisan way," Blackburn said."

The GOP has been basically silent about Trump's remarks. 

And as for NO religious oriented group or Trump evangelical supporters, as they are at times described, not speaking up is imo condoning a "Win At All Costs" attitude that is at odds with a christian ethic.

It seems like the majority of repubs believe that cheating is perfectly acceptable for them.

Amazing how many trumpers still believe that Obama had control of the House & Congress for the 8 yrs of his Presidentcy.

Me, a Canadian, knows that the Democrats had control of both House & Congress from January 2009 - November 2010.

President George W. Bush had a Republican-controlled congress for the first six years of his presidency. Democrats took over in 2006 and Obama was elected in 2008

I am finding that many Americans are sadly lacking in political knowledge at both the state & federal level. Looking at various comments on different forums it seems they choose to believe trump because learning otherwise would be too much work.

Using his old personal cellphone number, President Trump has been calling former advisers who have not heard from him in years, eager to discuss his standing in the polls against the top Democrats in the field — specifically Joseph R. Biden Jr.

After seeing results of a devastating 17-state internal poll conducted by his campaign pollster, Tony Fabrizio, Mr. Trump told aides to deny that his internal polling showed him trailing Mr. Biden in many of the states he needs to win.

Now this fabrizio is touting new polling numbers. The new data tested issues Dems are running on. In all 17 states polled, POTUS leads.

Push poll question example, "Do you support Democrat's plan to provide free health care to illegal immigrants?" 

A push poll is a survey, often though not always conducted by telephone, consisting primarily of leading questions designed to change a listener's mind about an issue or candidate without actually admitting it. A method of denigrating or promoting a viewpoint or a candidate under the guise of a public-opinion poll whose questions are worded in a biased fashion in an effort to influence voters.

Disguised as research that aim to persuade large numbers of voters and affect election outcomes, rather than measure opinions. The data numbers is generally irrelevant.

The fact that the trump team is apparently playing them up, suggests the situation is as bad as the Times — and the public polling — suggested.

Since trump's approval rating is 40%, there is no way that he could be leading in every State without manipulation of the data.

The owner of the Japanese tanker is disputing pompeo's version of the episode.

He claimed Friday that the tanker was struck by a flying projectile. He also said that sailors saw something flying toward the vessel just before the explosion and that the impact was well above the waterline.

"We received reports that something flew towards the ship," said Yutaka Katada, president of Kokaku Sangyo Co. at a press conference. "The place where the projectile landed was significantly higher than the water level, so we are absolutely sure that this wasn’t a torpedo.

"I do not think there was a time bomb or an object attached to the side of the ship." He believes that it was a penetrating bullet, because an explosion would have caused damage in different areas.

"Sponsors of legal immigrants to the United States received word Friday that they’ll be on the hook “for every dollar” if those immigrants end up receiving welfare funds or other public support instead of earning a living and paying taxes.

The message came Ken Cuccinelli, a former Virginia state attorney general who last week became acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) following his appointment by President Trump.

“If the sponsored immigrant receives any federal means-tested public benefits, the sponsor will be expected to reimburse the benefits-granting agency for every dollar of benefits received by the immigrant,” Cuccinelli wrote in a USCIS memo."

Further in the article it states they will have legally enforcable contracts drawn up & signed.

It's almost to the point where a "Do Not Enter" sign needs to be hung. Apparently no-one in this administration has ever had a "life happens" event, where everything goes off the rails for a while.

Trump will marshal the Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act and the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act, both enacted in 1996. An administration official noted with a bit of glee that the latter became law with the support of then-Sen. Joe Biden. It was signed into law by Bill Clinton.

Even green card holders, who are permanent residents of the US, have to wait five years to qualify for nearly all social welfare programs.  

Whoever petitions for the visa has to report their own income and assets. If the amount isn't enough to keep the family out of poverty, the petition will be rejected.

The United States already rejects applications from potential immigrants who could end up on government assistance — people who aren't financially stable can't even get tourist visas. And research shows that poor, uneducated immigrants are the least likely group to use welfare.

This information can be found in the Center for Immigration Studies. CIS report exaggerates the extent of welfare usuage by immigrants.

Re: Factual research:  In an no-control scenario, immigrant households cost $1,803 more than native households.

In a controlled scenario where Table 5 shows that households headed by an immigrant with less than a high school education consume less welfare than native households with the same education level.

Table A3 shows that immigrant households with the youngest heads, 29 years old and under, impose a much lower cost than households headed by natives of the same age.

Table A4 shows that immigrants impose the greatest welfare costs in their first five years of residency but it decreases afterward and never again rises to that high initial level.

Interesting facts : Households headed by Hispanic, black, and Asian immigrants all consume less welfare than their native counterpart. Households headed by white immigrants consume more welfare than white natives.  Overall, immigrant households in poverty consume less welfare than native households in poverty.  Hispanic and black immigrant households both massively under consume compared to native Hispanics and blacks. 

The CIS report should have compared immigrant individuals to native-born individuals for three reasons.

The number of people in an individual does not vary but the number of people in a household can vary tremendously. The greater number of children in the immigrant household, rather than any different level of individual welfare use, is what largely drove the report’s results. Second, Medicaid and SSI benefit levels and eligibility are determined on an individual basis, not a household one. Third, it’s a lot easier and more accurate to compute the immigrant and native welfare costs when they are individuals than it is to work backward from the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), budgetary data, and imputations of program costs necessary due to a household analysis. 

Conclusion on This Report that provided trump's stats - CIS seeks to use immigrant welfare use as an argument for cutting legal immigration. Immigrants pay large surpluses into Medicare and Social Security. Tables with proper controls are buried later in the paper and the appendix. 

CIS’s headline result should have compared poor immigrant welfare use to poor American welfare use instead of comparing all American households to all native households.

Knew there were limitations & 'flat-out' restrictions on immigrants using social services - thank you ShoppingMoll for directing me to exact rules & law. I just despise that this Admin seems to take joy in wielding them as a 'threat' instead of simply implementing them thru the normal course of daily work.

We here in Florida are being inundated with news of Trump's campaign announcement tonight in Orlando. One of our local news stations even featured an interview with a couple who came all the way down from Cape Cod to attend the rally, they're such Trump fans. In the meantime Trump is voicing his displeasure with the ECB (well he did the Fed last week), issuing vague ICE deportation "edicts" and in general acting like a participant &/or host of a tv reality show. While I know I'm already a bit immune to the constant news on the 2020 election am definitely not looking forward to Trump kicking it into higher gear.

Seems trump - and his supporters at his rally - may think he is still running against Hillary. Speaking of 'derangement syndromes', might be time to move on and look at trump himself. Wouldn't the fact that he is running on the exact same things as four years ago mean that HE FAILED.  Of course he will blame it solely on the Dems, and the crowd will cheer as they do to every lie that he spews, but at what point will he be held accountable. I really enjoyed  this interview. George Stephanopoulos got far more than thirty hours-worth of lies in his ‘30 Hours with President Trump’ interview. Yes, George would have read all of the Mueller Report. He is that sort of journalist.

It is ironic that trump calls any media other than fox. fake news, but he readily sits down for interviews wth anyone who will give him the limelight.

When you look at trump & his offspring in their official UK state photo, you realize that class is something that you are born with and not something that money can buy. The lack of any idea on how to dress for a State banquet does present the idea of the Beverly Hillbillies coming to Buckingham Palace.

I don't think that the Conservative's ad comparing Trudeau to trump went over very well. I never did receive a reply from Sheer when I complained about his childish advertising.  I reminded him that he was failing to inform the public that although we pay carbon taxes, we also receive a carbon tax rebate. The next one should be arriving the first week of July. Many also receive a GST rebate, so it is not necessary to remove all taxes. 

The Greens are doing well. I wish the NDP would get moving. They have Jack Layton's legacy to protect.

Trudeau is polling better than he was in April & May.

Do Canadians really want a leader like ford making major decisions? Do we want a government like the US, that cuts social benefits in favour of the rich?

I don't think that the Conservative's ad comparing Trudeau to trump went over very well.

I didn't know that is what they were attempting to do or maybe it is a different ad. I record most things on tv to watch when I am bored so only catch bits before I fast forward. sheer is taking a chance comparing Trudeau to trump, opening himself up to the more obvious comparison of doug ford and trump.

I only caught bits today but ford is making cuts to healthcare, of course after promising he wouldn't and no one would lose their job, that is exactly what he is doing. Over 800 job loses expected. They lie, amazing that anyone 'believes' them. Another thing doug ford has in common with trump. Similar hair colour dye too ;)

I envy you that your Election in October & the politicians haven't been 'in your face' every day for over a year already.

Trump now bragging that he's raised @ $24.6 Million dollars since he "officially" announced he was running for re-election.

But this post actually a show of disgust for Money & Elections here in US. When you add up how much every individual politican has received, how much the various PACS have amassed, it is mind boggling & sad. Somewhere I swear I saw a news report that Trump has already paid over $10 Million for Facebook ads(?) Am hoping that's an error & will need to look into.

Only individuals, not corporations or trade unions may donate. Contributions are limited to up to $1,500 a year to each political party and up to $1,500 to all of the registered elections associations, contestants seeking the party’s nomination and candidates for each party.

Donors may give up to $1,500 to leadership contestants for a party as well as up to $1,500 to independent candidates. These limits were set in 2015, and the amounts increase by $25 each year. Political actors must disclose the names of anyone who donates more than $200.

Public funding - Candidates receive expense reimbursements & tax credits for election expenses, if they have at least 2% of the votes.

Political parties may spend 73.5 cents for every voter in districts where they are running candidates. Groups or individuals other than political parties and candidates may spend no more than $150,000, & no more than $3,000 of that may be spent in any one district. This is from when the election is officially called and election day. 

This has been the case since 1974. There are limits also on 3rd party spending. Provinces & territories have also election finance rules.

We believe in an even playing field for all political candidates. It is not how much money you raise, but about the issues that are of concern to the voters.

US political system is due for a major overhaul. From trump's comment, raising money is more important to him than how Americans & the country is doing as a whole. A shorter election cycle would allevate the problem of corrupt & lying politicians being allowed to outspend newer candidates.

I don't believe that trump stopped the proposed attack on Iran. He is itching to push the button that starts the war with Iran.

Slightly smarter people likely stepped in & persuaded the stable genius that downing a drone is not a major crisis. If the drone was in their air space, which I believe is very likely, for national security reasons Iran are within their rights to remove it.

The Washington Post is reporting that Trump has directed US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to “conduct a mass roundup of migrant families that have received deportation orders, an operation that is likely to begin with predawn raids in major US cities on Sunday.”

That is cowardly, both by trump & by ICE. There will be children involved. Seems like the cleansing is about to begin. I am hoping that some lawyer is looking very closely into m trump's status. Since she arrived in the US on a false pretense, out she should go.

Manafort deserved a pre-dawn raid  since he was involved in all sorts of illegal activity.
