This is why China is beating America as an economic superpower.

Shunde is one of at least 20 electric-centric versions of Detroit under construction as China goes all-in on a technology projected to sell in record numbers this year. President Xi Jinping wants the nation’s 500 electric car makers to be magnets for ancillary industries as he pushes to build a manufacturing superpower by 2025.

China stays focused on their future economic plans, while trump is all over the place.

Now trump is in a trade war with India He is sending a warning shot that the U.S. expects New Delhi to do more to prove it’s a Washington ally.

When you are a bully, you are unlikely to have any friends.

"It’s un-British to roll out the red carpet for Donald Trump - Sadiq Khan"

"Praising the “very fine people on both sides” when torch-wielding white supremacists and antisemites marched through the streets clashing with anti-racist campaigners. Threatening to veto a ban on the use of rape as a weapon of war. Setting an immigration policy that forcefully separates young children from their parents at the border. The deliberate use of xenophobia, racism and “otherness” as an electoral tactic. Introducing a travel ban to a number of predominately Muslim countries. Lying deliberately and repeatedly to the public.

No, these are not the actions of European dictators of the 1930s and 40s. Nor the military juntas of the 1970s and 80s. I’m not talking about Vladimir Putin or Kim Jong-un. These are the actions of the leader of our closest ally, the president of the United States of America. This is a man who tried to exploit Londoners’ fears following a horrific terrorist attack on our city, amplified the tweets of a British far-right racist group, denounced as fake news robust scientific evidence warning of the dangers of climate change, and is now trying to interfere shamelessly in the Conservative party leadership race by backing Boris Johnson because he believes it would enable him to gain an ally in Number 10 for his divisive agenda.

Donald Trump is just one of the most egregious examples of a growing global threat. The far right is on the rise around the world, threatening our hard-won rights and freedoms and the values that have defined our liberal, democratic societies for more than seventy years. Viktor Orbán in Hungary, Matteo Salvini in Italy, Marine Le Pen in France and Nigel Farage here in the UK are using the same divisive tropes of the fascists of the 20th century to garner support, but are using new sinister methods to deliver their message. And they are gaining ground and winning power and influence in places that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.

They are intentionally pitting their own citizens against one another, regardless of the horrific impact in our communities. They are picking on minority groups and the marginalised to manufacture an enemy – and encouraging others to do the same. And they are constructing lies to stoke up fear and to attack the fundamental pillars of a healthy democracy – equality under the law, the freedom of the press and an independent justice system. Trump is seen as a figurehead of this global far-right movement. Through his words and actions, he has given comfort to far-right political leaders, and it’s no coincidence that his former campaign manager, Steve Bannon, has been touring the world, spreading hateful views and bolstering the far right wherever he goes....

...History teaches us of the danger of being afraid to speak truth to power and the risk of failing to defend our values from the rise of the far right. At this challenging time in global politics, it’s more important than ever that we remember that lesson. The Guardian, June 1

Sadiq Khan is the mayor of London

That $1.4 billion quoted is how much all U.S. consumers together lost in economic welfare each month last year through the effects of the trade war, according to the research. This is the amount lost each month by November 2018.

Multiply 1.4B X 11 months = $15.4B  - Amount that all U.S. consumers together lost in economic welfare each month.

That cost doesn't include the costs to the citizens of other countries that imposed tariffs on imported goods from the U.S.

This is why economists broadly condemn trade wars as an economic non-win strategy where everyone loses.

Consider trump's interactions with other countries & factor in, how, this has affected the US economy.

Is it normal to take your adult children + their spouses on a state visit or is this a trump being trump thing. I don't know but it seems odd, takes 'bring your kids to work day' to a whole new level. I wonder if they were invited or just crashed, it wouldn't be the first time.

Just saw a picture of trump going into the State Banquet. His weight must be close on 300lbs now. He really stands out among the royals who are all in good shape physically, even the Queen. I can't see if he has a cumberband because of the size of his stomach.

Japan's PM knows how to work trump. This is what trump had for lunch double cheeseburgers. Japanese hosts aimed to please by serving him hearty meals full of his favorite Western flavors and ingredients. This is a trend that started back in 2017, when Prime Minister Abe and his team Last year much of the same type of cheeseburger.

NK served Durty Donald, the Durty Donald hamburger, with double beef and double bacon topped with strands of yellow chicken floss. “To match some of the controversy that surrounds him, we’ve put Russian dressing on it.

I see a theme - There is nothing like clogged arteries to stop someone in their tracks. Remember trump supporters, that trump chooses his own diet. Any medical conditions caused will be all on trump.

Well I didn't realize Trump had brought along the "kids"! Would like to think they didn't 'crash the party' but have the feeling they look at the mixing & mingling as more a business opportunity than working for the USA/the people.

Not at all a fashion person, but I'll guess the hat went with Melania's designer dress(?) If anything I wonder why she wears those heels. Me, I'd at least twist an ankle, at worst fall over, hit my head & get a concussion.

As for Trump, either he is gaining weight (yes he has been looking heavier) from not eating properly & watching too much tv or secret service has him don a protective vest all the time, no matter where he is or what he's doing. (If that were true, what does that say?)

What happens when you allow yourself some time off from political news! Just saw reports on Kushner interview where he glides over Saudi involvement in Mr. Khashoggi murder, calls campaign meeting with Russians a 'clown show', Trump's 'birther claims' regarding Pres. Obama brushed off like a piece of lint on a jacket, implied that there is nothing wrong with taking info from Russia regarding political rivals, etc. & mentions he's been cleared thru background checks so everything is a-okay. He's billed as a Presidential Advisor. After that interview, I'm not getting any better 'vibes' from/about him.

Right?! How about when he says this (from CNN / Chris Cilizza's 29 Eye Brow Raising Comments in Jared's Axios Interview): "One thing about the way I've conducted myself is not a lot of people know who I've been talking to and what I've been talking about and that protects people." Who the heck is he talking to? This guy is going to get the U.S.A. in deep(er) poo-poo with his secret shenanigans!

Trump and May conference today - talking about trade and how great it is between US and Britain.  One of the questions directed at Trump was regarding his thoughts on Brexit and NHS.  He flabbered about about Brexit, in a general way that showed very clearly, he had no firm opinion, (other than HE predicted it - LOL!)  and when pressed about NHS, had to be told by May what it means, he veered back towards trade and said that NHS and lot of other stuff will be "on the table'.  To May's horror.  And now all the Brits are talking about their health care being - what?  Farmed out to US companies?  I don't know what they are thinking.  But then, Trump doesn't know what he's thinking either.

A country's healthcare system would never be part of trade negotiations. If it was, the US would have had to consider adding universal healthcare to NAFTA negotiations. Since we are at the ratification stage, there is still time for me to send a quick email to Trudeau about adding this to the agreement. I would like to hear & see how trump would react.

A country does get tired eventually of having to pay high premiums just to access basic healthcare. Overall the NHS is a good universal healthcare system. Decades ago they were ahead in creating specialty clinics for women 's health, diabetes etc. I was impressed by how well the system works. Being British born I was fortunate not to have to pay for a visit to their emergency room. I had health insurance, but why go through the headache of paperwork when I was told it was unnecessary.

Thank you trump, you just gave the citizens a heads up for what the Tories have planned.

His calling the protests in London "fake news" once again raises the question of trump's mental state.

It is not normal to believe that you are living in an Utopian state where everyone loves you & those who don't are Democrats, far left extremists & nasty people.

trump needs therapy to understand, like toddlers & many teenagers do, that life will not always go your way no matter how you spin things or how many tantrums you throw.

I love how the UK protestors are creative in how they protest.

The trump robot will become another classic.

Now the world  knows why trump & his cronies didn't come out & condemn the Saudi government over the killing of Khashoggi. The threat in the Middle East is not Iran, but Saudia Arabia helped along by trump & decades of US foreign arms policies. Don't expect these ones to be loyal to the US. Look what happened in Iraq, the US arms deals created  hussein

Who are the ones in the current WH who are national security risks? trump, pompeo, bolton, kushner, perry

“The alarming realization that the Trump Administration signed off on sharing our nuclear know-how with the Saudi regime after it brutally murdered an American resident adds to a disturbing pattern of behavior,

It was only after Sen. James Risch, the Republican chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a Trump ally, made an "explicit directive" that the Energy Department complied, according to Kaine.

The first approval came 16 days after Khashoggi’s death in October 2018, said Kaine, a member of the the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees, who requested the information from the department months ago.

The Trump administration is in the process of negotiating a broader “123 Agreement” to allow the sale of nuclear technology to the Kingdom

Those talks have received bipartisan blowback in Congress after reports the Trump administration wouldn’t seek to prohibit the Saudis from enriching nuclear fuel into weapons-grade materials.

The second was approved four months later, after Republicans and Democrats publicly questioned America's relationship with the Saudis, passed legislation to blame Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for Khashoggi's killing and demanded legislation to put more pressure on Riyadh.

In response, however, Trump reiterated his support for the relationship, and Pompeo dismissed congressional concern as "Capitol Hill caterwauling" and a "media pile-on."

May job report - Companies added just 27,000 new positions, well below Dow Jones estimates of 173,000.

The reading was the worst since around the time the economic expansion began and the jobs market bottomed in March 2010 with a loss of 113,000.

Since 2010  the private payrolls count has increased by 21.3 million.

All of the major goods producing categories reported losses, with natural resources and mining down 4,000 and manufacturing off by 3,000. Franchise jobs also fell by 4,800.

Small business loss (50,000) came at firms with fewer than 20 employees, while the big loser in the goods sector was construction, where 36,000 positions were lost.

White House's top economist leaving. In a tweet Sunday night, Trump says the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, Kevin Hassett   will be departing "shortly" and praises him as having "done such a great job for me and the Administration."

FY! Hassett was an economist who predicted that the Dow would reach 36,000,

He argued that stocks in 1999 were significantly undervalued and concluded that there would be a fourfold market increase with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising to 36,000 by 2002 or 2004.

The Dow was pushed down by the bursting of the dot.com bubble as the NASDAQ peaked in 2000 and bottomed out in 2002, and by the 9/11 attacks in 2001. The Dow fell below 8,000 in 2002 and remained below 12,000 until 2006.

The book was largely discredited as misstating the risk characteristics of equity securities as equivalent to U.S. Treasury fixed income securities, it is commonly believed discredited for predicting a grossly inflated stock market.

The richest 0.1% of Americans owns as much as the entire bottom 90%, a trend that has been accelerating since the mid-1980s. The wealthiest 10% own nearly 90% of stocks, the highest such ratio since 1983.

This is why the DOW is not an economic indicator. It indicates how the wealthy are doing, not how the average American is doing.

top 1% earn 22% of total income in the U.S., up from 8% in the 1970s.

America actually ranks among the worst countries when it comes to income inequality. Coefficient is .40

Iceland, the most equal society measured by Deutsche Bank, has a coefficient below 0.25. Others are Norway, Denmark, Finland & Slovania.

What is similar in all these countries? They also have universal healthcare.

The Trump administration is placing new restrictions on the use of human fetal tissue in medical research. Federal scientists working at the National Institutes of Health will be prohibited from obtaining new tissue samples from elective abortions for ongoing research projects at the NIH.

Abortion rights opponents hailed the move as a first step toward a complete ban on the use of human fetal tissue in research.

I live around the block from Rancho Los Amigos, a rehabilitation and research hospital. I just read last week that one of their patients who is paralized from the neck down was able to move his hands, due to stem cell therapy.  I thought how amazing it is to live in a time when medical researchers are making such incredible progress in this area, giving hope where before there was none.

How horrible to want to pull such hope away from these people.

"I would have been honored." If so, then he wouldn't have let a little medical issue, such as bones spurs stop him from enlisting 5 times.

He would  later joke, repeatedly that his success at avoiding sexually transmitted diseases while dating numerous women in the 1980s was “my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave soldier.”

Mueller, for his part, not only volunteered for the Marines, he spent a year waiting for an injured knee to heal so he could serve.

It is generally takes three months to recover from heel spur removal surgery.

As usual trump spoiled D-Day by being petty about Mueller. Mueller is not the one who has made a fool of himself. trump has already cornered the market on that one.

He needed to bring along with him his propaganda machine to a very special remembrance.

Let's review Robert Mueller's war record: He’d received the Bronze Star with a distinction for valor for his actions in one battle, and he’d been airlifted out of the jungle during another firefight after being shot in the thigh.

He went on to hold high positions in five presidential administrations. He led the Criminal Division of the Justice Department, overseeing the US investigation of the Lockerbie bombing and the federal prosecution of the Gambino crime family boss John Gotti. He became director of the FBI one week before September 11, 2001, and stayed on to become the bureau’s longest-serving director since J. Edgar Hoover.

Throughout his five-decade career, that year of combat experience with the Marines has loomed large in Mueller’s mind. “I’m most proud the Marines Corps deemed me worthy of leading other Marines,” he told me in a 2009 interview.

trump is afraid of Mueller. trump should try & say these things to Mueller's face.

republicans should be proud that someone of Mueller's character identifies as a republican.

Mueller can be proud of how he served his country, in Vietnam & his years of dedicated public service.

I was just reading an interesting article about Finland. Victoria is attempting to do the same in provided supportive housing.

Finland is the only EU country where homelessness is falling.

Giving people homes as soon as they need them – unconditionally.

For those who think that this is another socialist idea.

This is not welfare. It is important that they are tenants: each has a contract, pays rent and (if they need to) applies for housing benefit.

Housing First policy was created by a social scientist, a doctor, a politician and a bishop.

“To say, look, you don’t need to solve your problems before you get a home. Instead, a home should be the secure foundation that makes it easier to solve your problems.”

Since its launch in 2008, the number of long-term homeless people in Finland has fallen by more than 35%. Rough sleeping has been all but eradicated in Helsinki, where only one 50-bed night shelter remains, and where winter temperatures can plunge to -20C.

Ainesmaa is on a two-year work experience programme designed to lead to a job. I’m on the autism spectrum. I think people are my friends, and then they rip me me off. I’ve been ripped off … a lot. But now I have my place. It’s mine. I can build.”

A recent study showed the savings in emergency healthcare, social services and the justice system totalled as much as €15,000 a year for every homeless person in properly supported housing.

Interest in the policy beyond the country’s borders has been exceptional, from France to Australia. The British government is funding pilot schemes in Merseyside, the West Midlands and Greater Manchester, whose Labour mayor, Andy Burnham, is due in Helsinki in July to see the policy in action.

This is the sort of policy that I completely support. Sometimes a person just needs help and they can become an engaged member of society. There was a homeless man living in one of our outlying cities. He found $2000 and turned it into the RCMP.

Despite his current situation, the man realized the money belonged to someone out there and turned it in because he felt it was the right thing to do,” Berube said. “This is an incredible display of honesty and selflessness.

He wanted thousands of dollars in donations collected for him across Canada to help others in need.

"Instead of asking how to collect it, he asked me how to donate it to Our Place and other food service providers.

He said investigators asked the man to think about his decision overnight and return to the detachment the next day, but the man stuck to his original wish, saying all he wanted was help finding a job.

He found a job very quickly due to his honesty & selflessness. And the donations were distributed where they were most needed.

This man's character is a polar opposite to trump's.  His philosophy was, honesty and "what can I do for others"

trump's philosophy is "what can you do for me."

Both Canada and the US have a Housing First program on a limited scale (sometimes by other names). It is definitely for veterans in the US but may also apply to others in need, in Canada it is for all but many are veterans. It is called something different in Vancouver but it is where my daughter works. It is under the same umbrella as the safe injection site and other programs for addicts. Basically meeting people where they are at, so no requirement to be sober or seek treatment before being provided with housing.

Both our countries have a desperate need for more housing of this kind. Jumping thru hoops should not be a requirement for a safe home. I wish we would go as far as Finland because it is so shameful that anyone, but especially a veteran, have to spend one night on the street. Some are resistant to housing but for those who want one it should be available. I had posted articles in the old forum about the success of it in both countries. A bonus that it is much less expensive to provide a home, even at no cost, than it is for a person to live on the street.
